  1. Re:Librarians are with the terrorists :( on House Limits Patriot Act Rules on Library Records · · Score: 1

Actually with the right combination of books found in a library or by using the library's public PC you can learn not only how to make the bomb, but also view the architectural diagrams of buildings to best determine where that bomb may be most effective. I do not totally agree with everything in the Patriot Act but the simple fact is that if there are mechanisms out there to help identify the possibility of a terrorist act before it occurs then I don't really see a problem with it. There is however a very thin line that the government needs to walk though with the Patriot Act and that is only using what they learn through the surveillance methods allowed by it for what it was developed for (and not to bust Johnny Doe for smoking pot or some other non-terrorist related crime...) That is the line in my opinion where I feel fine with the Patriot Act in general (some changes should be made but overall I understand the reasoning and accept it).

TEMPEST based attacks have been proven as viable a long time ago and I'm not sure this would qualify as a TEMPEST issue as you are purposefully broadcasting a signal for reception... Now if you are only considering sending the signal to your TV set and only your TV set then TEMPEST would be a concern (but considering the cost of some TEMPEST equipment I don't think that is much of a worry for a home user trying to mod out their home equipment).

  7. Cooler Technology Out There on Breathe Under Water Without Oxygen Tanks · · Score: 1

I am looking more forward to this technology if they ever get it working right... From an old Wired 2003 article: Researchers at Tokyo's Waseda University are perfecting an artificial gill designed to allow divers to stay submerged indefinitely. The device's exterior is woven from silicone strands, which protect a membrane filled with a concentrated hemoglobin solution. The brew draws oxygen through the membrane while keeping out the superfluous hydrogen. When heated, the hemoglobin releases its cargo, which then can be funneled into the swimmer's windpipe through a scuba mouthpiece. The Waseda team has been working on the gill since the mid-1990s and only recently created a version compact enough for field tests. The trick now is to figure out how to get a breathable amount of oxygen out of the hemoglobin solution. Once that's ironed out, it shouldn't be too long before humans and fish swim side by side for hours on end - which should finally prod science into solving the age-old riddle of wrinkled fingertips.

Actually under DMCA it is illegal to distribute or USE tools that circumvent copy protection technologies... The DMCA is just a pain in the ass. It doesn't make it illegal to copy your DVDs but it makes it illegal to use a mechanism to break the encryption so you can copy your DVDs (which in essence makes it illegal to copy your DVDs). Unless they change the DMCA so that it works better with the Fair Use stipulations under Copyright Law (which isn't gonna happen anytime soon) they need to come up with a way for owners to make back-ups of their media. To me the only way would be to have a Neutral party have software that can be used to make copies of the DVDs and to stop ppl from illegally copying movies each DVD has a unique ID assigned to it that people enter to allow the copying. Something along those lines would work for both ends and slow down the ppl who want to say copy Netflix DVDs. (And yes I realize that 2 days after that software is developed they will have key generators out there and blah blah blah...)

I am guessing that the Auto Check for New Updates feature is done via an HTTP Get from the home user's box so my question is that since the site is going to be under control of company X now can and will they use that feature to identify home users? Also a possibility is putting a bogus update on the web site so home users download a broken "new" version that won't work anymore... Not to be all conspiracy theory, but I think those situations are plausible. I for one will be turning off that check for updates feature promptly just in case...

I see all these comments about how this is going to cause everyone to quit EQ II and how the rich will have the best equipment and blah, blah, blah... I used to buy and sell EQ gear for real money all the time and if you actually play the game you learn that the best gear in game can not be bought. They make the truly awesome gear that you get from raiding uber mobs NO DROP. This means that it cannot be traded, sold and etc... The key to getting great gear in a game like this is getting into a good guild and taking on the big mobs in the big zones. Of course spending time getting your character up in levels and experience is important too, but I don't think Sony will allow that on their sales site because you wouldn't be selling an item. They will probably disallow the powerleveling services that charge X amount to play your character for you and get levels. In any case unless EQ II has changed their item drops drastically I would have to say that this won't hurt the game at all. (It will hurt the kids who burn their paychecks on some goofy piece of virtual kit though. Sigh there goes that college fund.)

I can either get a 7.1 or a 5.1 surround package using Proficient Audio speakers, but there aren't any reviews that I can find of that kind of speaker. I am also indecisive about getting 5.1 or 7.1 (I have been told not to go with 7.1 because it hasn't really taken off yet, but I am not an audio guy so I really can't rebut anything they say) Anyone had any experience with Proficient Audio (good or bad)... I plan on buying a PRISMIQ media hub from good ol' Thinkgeek and running MP3s and other things through my TV and hence through my surround sound set-up, but I don't want to wind up buying crappy speakers that are prone to blowing up! Everytime the government steps in and requests logs/audit data there are people that always scream OMG Freedom of Speech violation. Freedom of Speech does not mean you can say whatever the hell you want to and there will be no consequences. Ever heard of Lible and Slander?
