Some people don't have the eyes to distinguish between even 800x600 and 1024x768. Even knowing that, it's still weird to me that people can't perceive jaggies while watching DVDs or slightly sub-standard bitrates during fast motion. I was trying to show my dad the difference between HD and normal TV broadcasts, and it just didn't work for him. It's not that one's eyesight is particularly problematic, but rather that some people just don't analyze video quality as much as others, it would seem.
In no particular order, these are the notable additional requirements for Premium certification:
Effective now:
* HD Audio support that passes a "high-fidelity audio experience" test (exception: Business class systems have until June 1, 2007).
* Support for Direct3d 9 and DXGI feature sets (Direct3d 10 mandated by June 1, 2008).
* At least one digital output (e.g., DVI-D) for all add-in video adapters (not integrated video: that doesn't change until June 1, 2008).
* 100Mb Ethernet and/or and WiFi (802.11g must be supported; 802.11a can be supported only in addition to 802.11g).
* USB 2.0 ports throughout
* System resumes from ACPI S3 state ("suspend-to-ram") in 2 seconds (does not include user mode initialization, i.e., total "wake" time will be longer than 2 seconds)
Wow, what an ignorant statement. The Voodoo line of cards didn't use OpenGL nor Direct3D. Rather, they used their own proprietary library called 3dfx. That's why one had to be worried about whether or not one's graphics card would be supported by their software. Now, there are very few problems unique to only one card manufacturer, and everybody is working through Direct3D. The olden days of video card compatability problems are all but gone.
And apparently a two-page benchmark is good enough for a slashdot frontpage article?! Why don't you try REAL benchmark for the X1900 XTX, which also shows off two flavors of the X1800, and two other flavors of the NVidia GeForce 7800.
The article doesn't give much more information about the technology that was given in the summary. Hopefully we will see some specs for this promising tech soon!
... researchers are citing the Internet as one of the main contributing factors to a shrinking of social networks among Americans.
What are you talking about? I've got 89,402,390 people in my social network! This internet thing is great!

What a hypocrite, Stephen Hawking. Why doesn't he take some of his own advice for a change?
Don't fix it if it's not broken!
I haven't had it happen, but maybe this is what you're looking for?
Are you certain you're not looking for this? Oh, wait, that's not what you're looking for. That's NOT what you're looking for!
Oh, not again... Obi-wan's gonna kill me!
... able to swallow Earth merely once, but it blows just as hard as its older cousin."
Mmm... incestulicious!
Doesn't this article violate the first and second rules of fight club?

What should we do? Tell us, O Slashdot!
I recently went to Korea for a month, and all the wifi router config pages are in Korean. WTF!!!!!
I'm not gonna lie, that's pretty insightful.

Yeah, no kidding! Even Deep Blue couldn't defeat more than the world's best chess player!
Did anybody else just HEAR Zoidberg's voice perfectly when they read that? Wooaaah~...

Perhaps you're confusing the AK-47 with the AK-74? They are hardly the same. :)

Launch a probe already, Nasa!!
Yeah, but what is the line number that GOTO 3 belongs on? I think I know what the whooshing noise you just heard was, by the way. :)
Wow, is there nothing our government won't stop at to keep us from knowing, nowadays? :P

Companies have considered Aphrodite, but she seems to always screw things
:)
Couldn't have put it better myself...
Yeah, if it ever comes out, unfortunately.
