Shifty Alien: Yes, but is better, is Z.

  4. Or you could risk a bursting battery... on Which Rechargeable Batteries Do You Use? · · Score: 1

It may not be the best solution from an environmental standpoint, but I recently purchased a charger that claims to safely recharge most alkalines (not 9V) along with NiCD and NiMH. The "Battery Xtender" seems to differentiate between these automatically and safely charge alkalines by doing so slowly...veeerrrrryyyyy slowly. ~8 hours on AA batteries, with no obvious difference in charging times for name-brand batteries and the off-brands. I've tried boldly ignoring directions on other chargers in the past, and alkalines normally get very hot before they pop and leak. A few survived and worked (which only encouraged further experiments), but not many. With the new charger, alkalines don't get warm to the touch. I have not used it enough to notice long-term changes in battery life, so my opinion on the product may change by this time next month.

What I want to see... nay, hear... is voice recognition. It might not work for any online games, but most of the kid- and family-oriented games, i.e. Mario Party, would rock with voice commands only. Then the adults could get something from Rockstar Games with obscene voice commands. Fun for everyone.

  12. Re:It will probably be a hardware addon for the ps on Sony to Make an "iTunes for Movies" · · Score: 1

Basically what I was thinking. Sony has the ability to cost-effectively produce (or contract out) itty bitty hard drives and would likely use one if DRM could be enforced on the hardware level. I'm betting on a usb connection that would only work if the serial number (or similar identifier) of the PSP and the content on the drive matches up. It would have to use a seperate battery and may even come with a not-stylish Sony carry case.

Dude, I appreciate the offer. I have no delusions over the longevity of this product or the number of distributions it will work with (three, and not the ones I was looking at). I was just saying it was cool that I might get a little more milage from a purchase.

I am one of those Windows users who has spent a lot of time looking at Linux distros but has yet to commit. I am studying for those basic certifications I need to be taken semi-seriously and recognize the need to move to Linux for reasons both personal and professional. I have spent the money on Nero Ultra Edition for the sake of having a lot of stable tools beneath the fairly unattractive interface.

Being able to keep (some of) these tools while I move on to greener pastures will make life just a little easier, and I will feel that my money was better spent.

  20. High Price Point on PSP Final Specs and Launch Titles · · Score: 1

I cringe every time I think about the price, but $249 is still far lower than importing (a viable option as there is no regional encoding) from a retailer like Lik-Sang, which at this moment is asking $279 before shipping for *just* the handheld and $329 for the value pack.

I'm disappointed that Infected didn't make it as a launch title (see March issue of Game Informer mag.), because evil, explosive zombie mall-Santas would make summer more bearable.

A pre-Christmas price drop might be too much to hope for, but I'm willing to wait... and use tacky sigs.... and on occasion be ridiculed over tacky sigs....

...good PR. Sony will pay millions of dollars for print and televised ads that hint at a glorious future for gaming when the PS3 comes due, probably using vague terms like last iteration's "Emotion Engine" to discourage average customers from doing any proper research or comparison. Nintendo did the same with a painfully brief quote in an equally brief article. Free publicity is something Iwata may be banking on, based on the silence regarding the new console design beyond that threatening "no more d-pad" statement.

Is there any practical data we can gather or presume from this article? Yes, that EA won't do much on the Revolution if the interface is fundamentally different from the competition, but we suspected this already, didn't we?

  24. Let's make the argument more interesting on Game Makers Could Be Liable For Violent Games · · Score: 1

It's an amazingly midwestern proposal, based on concepts of morality that involve blaming people completely seperate from any alleged incident. My local (Oklahoma) Fox news affiliate has stories about the horrors of video games running on a weekly basis this year, but no new laws have come up yet.

I imagine juvinile offenders (if 17-year olds in Washington are considered juvinile) will be offered reduced sentences to claim video games inspired their respective crimes, but would it be moral to encourage falsehoods from others in order to pass an ideological law?

Ladies and gentlemen, we can make this argument more interesting. Find small game studios willing to design bloodthirsty games and ask them to use strong religious themes. Contact local media outlets and condemn the game. Act surprised that the book people most love to quote out of context has depictions of murder, rape, adultery, etc. If you are reenacting violence from a sacred text, is it the game or the scripture provoking children? Let the chaos ensue.
