  1. I have one simple rule for these situation on Easing the Job of Family Tech Support? · · Score: 1

I have an agreement with my mother which is 55 yo and has no computer technical skill. "You want me to take care of your computer, fine, you are not admin, you CAN'T INSTALL software." I do the software install. Since most of the malware need to copy itself onto some directory where she dont have write acces, it fixed many of the problem. Also none of her friends can come and do a "look what i found on this weird webpage is cute and funny but i need to install it first" Since she had her last computer 3 years ago I never had to re-install or clean malware out of it. Im just thinking now of doing a re-install as the Windows is aging and well windows age bad lol. Its not 100% proof but it did a good job for me.

Collecting fee for iPod and music players... how will this be done, flat fee or percentage of the sale? I have a good idea... why dont we put a fee on software sales. Yeah fee on software sale for those who work on Open source software. They outta make a living too, and since we haven't paid for their software, no one will be paying twice. And thats a good way for the big software compagny to repay the small guys who generously give their work for free. This should make a triving FOSS and beat the stiffling nature of proprietary software. And not encourage all those one hit wonders from recieving free money for life.

I first got out of college and got a internship at a very small compagny. There i was tech 1st grade... just like you.. hell i tell you. But i managed to hang for a year. The good thing is that compagny was soo poor that every other job was better, so there were job opening very often. So after a year i got second level and i helped hire the new 1st level guy. Then it was hell but.. much more colder than it used to be. I hanged another year and then the 3rd level quit for a better job, so i took the post, now the fun was there. i was running the IT, under the manager, but i was the one choosing the hardware, choosing the technology, i held that job for a year again. Now I was ready, i had gone through 3 level of tech support and also been "sub-manager" of the IT department. Then the manager left, but nooo way was i to become a manager.. i hate politics and budjet and stuff.. so i stayed at my post and got a new manager. Then it was my turn i left the compagny and had enough experience to fit almost any job in IT since as 3rd i had touched almost everything, from Network management to server management hell i even did some HR when it was time to get new staff. Now i have a dream job, i work as a Linux System Admin and im loving it. Hope this gives you courage and keep it up. so my advice would be, find another helpdesk job, where you can have advancement, go for small town where there are less staff and more opportunity. Good luck mate!

Im sure you can meet everyone at your compagny and tell them that the best thing is to always be suspicious on the internet. Dont trust emails, NEVER, even if you know the person, double check if you have any little doubts. But for the AV solution well I dont have suggestion beside the "dont": Dont use AVG it sucks bad.. dont use Panda (if it even exist anymore) its the worst, its even harder to remove than a virus itself. I heard good thing about Nod32 but never used it. I like Symantec but i guess its not cheap

I agree with you, but not completely. Huge billionaire compagny shouln'd be allowed patent, they dont need them. Take a trip back in time and look at what the patent system was intended for: 1. Protect inventor from being ripped and copied by huge compagny with much more wealth and much more manpower that can produce a similar product at a lower cost. 2. Invite people to be creative without the fear of actually loosing money over their invention. (many small inventor invest quite a big ammount of money to make a product, if it get ripped and sold cheaply by someone else, they can't get into their money. Now take a look how the patent system now work. 1. Big compagny patent absolutely everything just in case someone try to make a product using that idea, then sue them. Most of the time waiting until the product hit the shelves to sue, even if they know someone is currently investing a truck load of money and that they will surely get ruined by the lawsuit. 2. Big compagnies just cross patent their stuff.. Ei: M$ get a software out, IBM says the infringe our patent number 14567, M$ answer yeah well your product XYZ infringe on our patent 76543 so lets call it even. 3. I think everyone knows about the patent trolls.. no need to go into details here.. So.. is it me or.. this system is completely screwed.. What need to be done IMO.. 1. Big compagny can't get patent.. you have more than 2000 employees.. No patent for you.. (the actual number can be discussed..) 2. Patent have a 2 years life time.. at the speed things moves these days.. 20 years is not a long time.. its a lifetime in the techology.. 3. All expired patent goes into CC (Creative commons) and are open. 4. Patent needs to be reviewed by specialist.. you want a computer science patent, fine a computer specialist is going to review you application and its better be a good idea cause if you submit a crap, you'll get a fine for abuse. 5. The most and I say this very seriously, the most important thing is that you can easily practice that new language. Im french and learned english easily. I watched TV, I chatted on the net I read some books (thank you Asimov) I learned by practicing. Thats the most easiest way, if you can`t practice regularly it will take way longer for you to learn that new language.
