Look, if all this fucking stress about whether the damage is too great to come back, or this stress about the foam falling off is so great, than wrapping duct tape strategically around the shuttle can't be such a bad idea. As long as we have Astronauts in the shuttle, their safety takes the big concern. Cut the payload if it makes it a lot safer, not having to worry about the foam on the outside of the fuel tank falling off and hitting the tiles that are needing to be pristine with no protective layer of cheap plastic or anything in between. Fine. Holy cow 1000 pounds of duct tape to solve the problem is an idea to make fun of people for :P

You go to buy a new vcr, you have to peel off the tape. Well you launch a 2 billion orbitor, you put a easily peelable plastic film on the stupid tiles that have to work right or you kill 7 people. Guys the orbitor cost a meer 2 billion. You fucking republicans better fucking justify the price tag of Iraq fucking assholes. What the fuck sort of life could we be living right now if all that fucking money went into research and exploration assholes. Iraq is getting a muslum law constitution like Iran and we still dumping billions of dollars into George W. I agree with you. While I was completely into Quake for a period of like 5 years (after giving up console gaming for the most part in 1994), the N64 almost completely turned me off. For one thing, the 3d was ok, but Quake blew it away. A friend loaned me a N64 and some games about a month ago, so I'm starting to discover some of the fun of Mario Kart, and Mario 64, but at the time the selling point of 3d games was a complete downer for me, as Quake had completely taken over my gaming life. Also, where the heck were the RPG's? The SNES had literally dozens of rpg's. Other than Zelda, you could probably count the rpg's for N64 with 1 hand's fingers. If Nintendo had encouraged developers to make more 2d games and push the 2d gaming experience to new levels, as well as encourage more RPG's, then I _may_ have had some interest.

Having previously been a NES and SNES fanboy (I'll admit it), my friends who were N64 Fanboys didn't help me much with my perception of N64 much either :) "Quake sucks! James Bond on N64 kicks it's ass! RPG's suck! Blah" :) Everyone is entitled to their opinion :)

They've undoubtedly thought of this, but if foam hitting the shuttle is such a big deal, couldn't they put something between the shuttle and the tank to protect the orbiter? I know a big sheet of steel would be ugly, heavy, and probably not aerodynamic, but even a layer of sheddable plastic or something. It may be a big design undertaking this late in the game for the shuttle, but safety is very important. If the barrier was a durable enough material, it conceivably could protect the shuttle even if the external tank exploded, if the shuttle wasn't torn apart by the violent inertia.

I think he meant that side-mounted payloads that depend upon a nearly completely intact exterior to survive rentry are safety hazards. Considering the stakes, I think NASA has every right to be paranoid over this right now! They were discounting the stuff falling off the tank as a likely cause for the Columbia breakup for a long time!
