  1. How does it work? on Tapping Trees for Electricity? · · Score: 3, Funny
The article doesn't do much to explain the process. Maybe this is it:

Wadle became interested in the concept while studying lightning coming from the ground, "which led him to believe that there's some type of power emanating from earth, which led him to trees," Lagadinos said.

Ah, I see. Trees produce lightning. But surely that would be more than 2 volts?

A quick search turned up two abstracts for video search algorithms:

Efficient Video Similarity Measurement and Searc (probably grad students here)

I felt my brain being damaged while I looked them over, but they appear to employ something similar to image matching with the added component of movement. It looks like if they are implemented as desired, you could find video similar to a reference piece. This is not useful for searching based on a text query, however. But, you could build an index that matched words to a reference library of video clips, then search for matches to your reference clip.

Of course, all the heavy crunching would be used to build a lean, fast search index, hopefully.

  6. Re:Stock Segways or were they modded somehow? on Crossing America on a Segway · · Score: 5, Funny

Before I would consider buying a Segway, I would wanted it modded in some ways. First, I would need a seat. Wait, maybe 2 - no, four - seats so that I can bring some friends along. Of course, that would affect the stability, so I would probably have to add another set of wheels. And with all that extra weight, I doubt the electric motor could provide the necessary juice, so some sort of gasoline engine might be appropriate. Then to keep the weather out, maybe some metal sheilding on the top and sides, with glass windows to see out of. Oh, and of course a radio.

While I could easily strip the DRM off the WMA files ..., that would take too much effort on my part to make it worth the money.

This is the reason that I avoid 'buying' downloadable music. Case in point: a coworker gave me a free download the other day (won it on a bottle cap, I think it was MSN or something). So I went ahead and downloaded it at work, God help me. After several tense moments, I finally got it to play at home, after it made sure that I did indeed have the right to do that.

Even then, with the music I have purchased, I have to wait for the rights acquistion to make sure that I have not committed the unspeakable crime of moving my music around.

Ninety-nine cents per song is, IMO, a fair price. I would love to pay 99 cents, if not for the DRM baggage.

BTW, you can find some great music at garageband.com. Not big names, of course, but the downloads are MP3 with no DRM crap.

I'm not even going to attempt to Google this to find meaningful figures, for (I hope) obvious reasons. Anyone know where we can see the real increases/decreases for funding of such items?

It's not a news site. Like most of the links to "evidence" posted in this thread, it's really opinion disguised as news.

Look, do you believe for a second - a second - that if there were anything to this conspiracy crap, that all the major news agencies, CNN, et al would not jump all over this thing? They try to destroy Republicans in general and the President in particular every chance they get. And a lot of you people think they're covering for Bush in some way?

If I see "balance" in a story anymore I have to assume I'm being lied to.

I think we all might be suffering from the culture wars. I read over some of Card's comments, and I agree they could be characterized as "rantings." However, Lewis seemed to be just a mainstream Christain of his day, no more at war with science than any other fellow. It's only in the last 20 or 30 years or so here in the U.S. that "fundamentalist" Christains (they're not really fundamentalists in the original meaning of that word, but that's another topic) have been targeting science that did not agree with their religion.

So there's no reason, in my opinion, that a "man of science" could not read, enjoy, and even agree with a mainstream Christain author.

Narnia is not immune to the fantasy haters, either.

That's the way it looks, but it was ever thus. But think about the "hard" side of the economy, and imagine the resources you would need to be able to create a startup automobile company. You would need huge backing to compete. (Well, maybe not with the shape GM is in these days :) But just about 50 years ago, Preston Tucker almost did it.

Now, in the "soft" side of the economy, startups are relatively cheap and easy. And some of these startups make no bones about their intentions: they want to be successful enough to be bought by one of the big guys. Then they can take that money and innovate something else, or buy an island, or whatever. But usually they invent something else new, which gets bought... Not too bad for the consumer, really.
