I'm obviously not as close to the source as you are, but aren't there other computers in the BlueGene family being worked on also, that will be faster than both L and C? The quote of the Japanese computer being 73 times faster than BlueGene/L, but by the time the computer is actually built I will be suprised if it is faster than the current incarnation of BlueGene. IBM has been doing some great work as far as supercomputing goes, working on it must be a blast.

  3. Re:Hopefully not on Another Internet Stock Price Bubble Building? · · Score: 1

No, stock prices are based on assumed values. Most blue-chips stocks that have proven themselves have price/earnings of 15-20, and as earnings rise, so do stock prices (so the P/E is kept). Google, on the other hand, has a P/E based on what people FORCAST the earnings will be. Unfortunately, stock markets are not perfect, so even when the actual earnings near the forcast, people will still keep the P/E inflated. If Google has bad earnings, people are going to be hit hard...very hard.

  4. Hopefully not on Another Internet Stock Price Bubble Building? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Google included, a number of these stock prices are based on future earnings, not current earnings. The prices may seem rediculous (when looking at their P/E), but hopefully they should fix themselves as their earnings increase. The problem is that people think 300 bucks a share is what they are worth now, and may continue driving the price up, until to bursts.

  6. Dupe aside on Google Launches Scholar Beta · · Score: 1, Informative

This service has been out for a long time, but dupe aside, it is a very useful site. Academically, it allows you to search journal articles without having to sift through all of the other junk generated with a standard Google search. I am a big fan of this site and I use it quite often.

  7. The good old days on Happy Birthday, Amiga · · Score: 4, Interesting

I can remember back with the old systems like the Amiga. I was completely amazed when I first got to use one, and I thought that computers had reached perfection. Now if I was to show someone one they would laugh and think it was something a high school kid built in his garage.

  8. Who is suprised? on TSA Violated Privacy Act · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is how companies handle privacy. They do something the majority of people will accept (taking names) and then they secretly change the scope of their project to get much more data. Then their defence is "If they gave us their name, we assumed they would be OK giving us this. We are a reputable company". I think they should be prosecuted for this, what if their system got hacked? That is a great deal of possible identity theft.

  9. A current one on Top 10 Web Fads · · Score: 1

  10. Business vs People on Do Not Call List Under Attack · · Score: 1

Clearly, anyone on a Do Not Call list does not want to be called. They went through the work of registering for the list, so they clearly are annoyed by people. If a company had an existing business relation, I'm sure the customer would not report the company for continuing to call on business related matter. For this reason, people should be able to register "Valid Business Associates" who are free from the stricter regulation.

I'm not saying that Windows and Linux don't already do an excellent job, and handle most/all of todays needs. 13. New OS on Bob Metcalfe on Open Source, IPv6, IETF · · Score: 1

The problem with a new OS other than Windows or Linux is that most of the Open Source community is against Windows, and put all their effor into Linux in an attempt to take down MS market share. It would be nice to see a bunch of OSS developers get together and create a new exciting OS.

  14. Main advantage on The Future of Firefox · · Score: 5, Insightful

The main reason I like Firefox is that it pushes innovation. Back when IE was the clearly dominant browser, with no real competition, there were very few sensible inovations for browsers. Sure, a few little things here and there, but for the most part it was monopolized. Firefox's popularity will ultimately lead to a better browser market all around.

The fact is, people are going to use the web when they are ill to look for information about the illness. The best thing to do is to provide reliable data, so they don't end up diagnosing themselves based on information they found on a blog. The user could enter symptoms, and a list of possibilities could be listed (as well as numerous messages telling them to go see a doctor). It would be similar to the program Lisa uses to diagnose Homer and Bart as lepers.

I like this idea, and I think it could be used in other areas. What if users could use their remotes to review shows, much like how slashdot users moderate posts. For example, if you were watching an Episode of The Simpsons, and it wasn't as funny as usual, you could press a button to e-mail the creators "BELOW STANDARDS"...or if it was good "VERY FUNNY".
