Has anyone poured through the full report to find out the ages, races, sex of the test subjects yet? I will eventually check for myself but I thought I'd ask...
Personally i think makinging deals with all these stations/companies is kinda spoiling the whole idea. Pretty soon they are gonna have to change the name of the site to "TheirTube"...
I think this affects more than work...my whole life recently seems like there is never enough time for whatever it is i want to be doing at any given moment. Sure some of it is trivial, but its still noticable to me. For example, I love absorbing media. Be it for knowledge or entertainment. Between podcasts, music, the Stern Show and other sat radio shows, downloaded TV shows, movies, reading web pages at work, on my Treo, at home...i feel like i could quit my job and do nothing but soak up all this stuff 24/7. I have even started downloading books and magazines to my treo...sometimes books on tape. Im addicted. I cant ever get enough. Its insane how much info & entertainment is out there. Its no wonder i am less productive.
Yes its true region coding is used as a marketing control. But the very concept of region coding includes the ability to keep pirated copies from being played in different regions. Until the advent of ripping DVD's and the proliferation of region free players, it was a fairly decent way of protecting content.
...positive and negative effects of this decision...regardless I say "screw the cable providers!" I'll keep downloading only the shows I want to see and watching them in HD via my xbox...at least until they stop raping their customers. My cable bill from Comcast used to be about $130 a month, to include cable, HDTV, set-top box rental, on-demand, internet and all the fees/taxes. Add more if I had wanted DVR capabilities.
Now I pay about $60 per month for USENET and superior 1UP/3DN DSL (granted its only this much cause i still have to pay for the server/newzbin fees and the phone line). Usually somebody posts the shows I want the same night they come out, at worst a few days later.
Which sounds better to you?
P.S. I think i just broke the first rule of USENET Club...
I can see only one viable (i.e. pathetic) reason that an ISP would remove it's USENET service. More than likely they (and other ISP's) have begun to feel pressure from music/movie/game industry regarding illegal downloading. The easiest way out for them, is to place the responsibility on private USENET services & the customer. In terms of liability, its the best decision for them.
Contrary to apparent popular opinion, not all of Usenet is binaries groups where people can rip material illegally if P2P is too hard for them to understand.
USENET has seen a huge influx of downloaders in the past 2 years. Crack downs on P2P have driven savvy downloaders there. But just because YOU are a seasoned USENET pro, don't think that its "easy". I am one of the offenders. I switched to downloading from USENET about 1 and a half years ago cause I couldn't find the TV shows I wanted on P2P and I found IRC time consuming and controlled by too many people who don't want to help you if you are a "noob". I had a hard time figuring out how to "use" USENET and I still don't fully understand it. All I know is how to download.nzb files to get those RAR's and PAR's. However, I do know there is a wealth of information out there available on USENET that I would love to tap into. But it would take setting aside some time to read about how to do it (for me at least).
All I'm saying is, I plan to keep on learning, but don't assume that people are downloading from USENET because its an easy alternative to P2P, cause its not. There are way too many steps involved for the average Joe Schmuckatelli to deal with just to get the file you want to use, including finding, downloading, error correcting, decompressing, etc...
Please understand the following is based on nothing more than my own meandering experiences:
I'm sorry, but I follow most of the popular tech sites and blogs and I don't see a whole lot of proof that the "USA has generally kept ahead by inventing stuff and that's why it'll probably stay ahead of Asia"...and as far as education goes, I cant remember reading anything in the last few years about American education, except stories about how poor it is when compared to foreign universities; especially ones in India.
IMHO the USA is trailing the rest of the first world countries of the world in these areas. Our up and coming, young thinkers of today & tomorrow are too consumed keeping tabs on Paris Hilton to care about education, politics & world affairs. The rest of the world is selling their cool new products to us. Since we cant seem to make any ourselves.
Hey thanks for the support. Did you happen to notice it was written for a clubbing website (whose average readership age is around 21)? Ever heard of catering to your audience? I wrote it that way on purpose. If you actually make it to the end of the article, and still can't figure out my opinions of the games and the console, then you're a tool. Now if you had merely been commenting on my mispellings and grammer, then I would have just stuck to calling you an azzhat (sic).
So if the users are forced to participate in the file sharing network...are they sharing the file only while they are using it? Can it be turned on & off? The pessimist in me pictures a client installed by AOL, running in the background all the time, which the average Jan Brady doesn't know is there and doesn't know why her connection is slower than usual.
