  3. Polycom on Affordable and Usable Video Conferencing? · · Score: 1

As mentioned already, polycom does make a good system for video conferences. For classroom use it might be limited. Depends on the size of the class. 30+ people and it might fall short. The smaller the number the better. Meeting size groups it is a great system. For larger groups, the camera is going to have to be set to track the speaker which might lead to some interesting camera views on the other side. Or the camera is set to get the whole group which means not everyone is seen clearly. Plus is an average cost of $10,000 considered low cost? Add up the cost of the camera, main unit, the part to connect a laptop and the price shoots up quickly.

I have used 3-4 different polycom models plus the PVX software. For meetings it is a great system. For two way class use, it sort of falls short. For one way class (a class is listening and watching to the professor remotely) use it works.

Then again, many new consumer boats are going 'drive by wire' as well. The throttle and shift controls are wired to the engine instead of a long cable running between them. Steering as well. The steering has a wire from the wheel to the back (stern) where a hydraulics take over. A joystick to control a boat has been option since the 60s. Seen a few old ski boats with a joystick, no steering wheel or other controls. Everything was connected to the joystick. Today's wired ones are a lot easier to move and control then the old cabled ones.

So a lot of the time when a techie goes the extra mile and comes up with a good solution it is not implemented, or worse they are chastised for wasting their time on it. Again this is even prevalent in the currently depressed economy where decreasing costs and expenses is more important than new innovative ideas in the eyes of many business people. There are only so many times an intelligent person will go that extra mile, get rewarded with a proverbial kick in the teeth, before they learn not to bother.

Or worse, the extra mile becomes the expected norm.

I remember working a lot of long hours (70-80 every week for months on end) to get projects done on time. The marketing people kept on making shorter and shorter time-lines with clients. We were getting projects finished in 3-4 weeks that should have taken 2-3 months. When we were called into a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to explain the new project that was due at 4PM the following Friday (3 days later), the 5 IT people looked at each other and said no way could we get this done. We were told no excuses, the contract was signed. Our getting projects done in totally unreasonable about of time came back to bite us.

Makes me wish judges were more up to speed with IT contracts instead of plain old 'contract law'. Such a case should be either thrown out or found for the person not the company in under 5 minutes.

And, I hate to say it, but "barely getting by" is not the same thing as "living within your means". Living within your means implies that you're putting away 10% for retirement and an equal amount for an emergency fund (for medical, legal, or unemployment purposes).

    -Restil

If that is the case a lot of people are not living within there means. Because 10% away for retirement and additional 10% away for the OS (Oh Shit) fund is a not possible for many. If I could take 20% of my income and put it away that would be great. But that is not possible with all the costs going up while the pay is staying the same. Or in essence if your pay does not go up to cover cost of living increases, you got a pay cut.

Which is more natural? Writing by hand or typing on a keyboard? Some may prefer typing to writing, but there are enough people who do not type and are faster writing by hand that a true digital tablet would work for them.

Sine when does Apple make hard disks? The hard disks in Apple laptops and Apple desktops that I have seen are made by the same people that Dell, HP, and everyone else uses (I have seen Toshiba, WD, Seagate). The only difference is the hard drive has a little apple printed on the label. The hard drive specs are the same as the non Apple labeled ones. Apple has to have some way to see where the bottle neck is that is causing the beach ball. Saying it is the hard disk is jumping the gun a bit. Unless you put in a 5400 RPM (or slower) disk or a disk with no cache on it, I'd look else where.

I am saying this since I have changed 20+ hard drives in Apple laptops and desktops. There was no difference in performance with a non Apple drive vs an Apple branded drive. Usually the non Apple drive was bigger, had a bigger cache, and sometimes a faster RPM. Which usually made the machine more responsive.
