About the Wheel of Time: it's an amazing read even though the story really wears out in the final volumes. It's sad that the author recently passed away as the upcoming 12th book was supposed to conclude the series. Brandon Sanderson is working on finishing it and I'm really wondering how they'll be able to close so many broad & ongoing plots in a single book. For that alone it will sure be an interesting read.

  17. Re:OMG on Higher Oil Prices Are Starting To Bring Jobs Home · · Score: 1

I liked reading the link you provided and hold that true in some debates, but please explain further the parallel? I don't really see it ... using the example, wouldn't it mean "less tailors" (outsourced jobs) and "more glaziers" (jobs for U.S. citizens) - assuming that vandalism is the price of oil?

This analogy ain't right either ... but like I said, I just don't see the parallel. We're talking about jobs in the U.S. ... OK, maybe we had 1 manager that made 100K a year supervising offshore operations ... but now instead we have 5 employees here doing each 20K. That may be the same amount of money, but it's more jobs (and happy people in the U.S.) ...

And I don't want to further speculate on how this might also affect the local economy (need for local transportation, more people having money in a town = more specialized shops emerging and so on ...), but I think it's not a simple matter of "we have a set amount of money distributed amongst the population, everything is preserved nothing is created" line of thoughts.

    My 2 cents :)

  18. Spell: Fear of Girls on Fear of Girls, a D&D Documentary · · Score: 5, Funny

    Spell: Fear of Girls

Description: The caster gains +10 protection from all Charm effects and +5 bonus to Charisma checks from female characters. The components required are 5 mod points on Slashdot. The casting time varies depending on how fast the player's computer can boot when he arrives home Friday night. Once the OS is loaded, an invisible social shield will slowly form around the caster which lasts 48 hours. This shield protects the caster from answering the occasional phone call from Chaotic/Evil Warriors and Rogues that may invite him to go out during the weekend with vague ambitions of getting laid tonight. It may break at any time if the computer is left unattended for more than 30 minutes (the caster may be granted cumulative +1hrs grace periods per visit to the mystical porn elf). When protected by the shield, the caster is immune to any afterthoughts from realizing the last time he has spoken to a girl for more than two minutes was five years ago and that it was answering a survey over the phone - and can thus focus on the careful study of his spellbook undisturbed.
