FFXII is not in the works, it is out of the works and into stores in Japan (has been for months), just not out of translation yet. Though I live in Japan, I must hangly my nerdly head in shame at not having bought it yet. Free time ain't as plentiful as it used to be.
Actually, it's the "War on Terror." It seems that illegal free pirated mp3s are a huge source of funding for terrorists. Remember, every time you get an mp3 off of gnutella, it funds terrorism in Iraq (the only place in the world with terrorists right now, thanks to our clever plan to lure them all there and distract them).
My family took in a homeless man once, it was a very trying experience. He suffered from hydrocephalus (hydrocephaly) and had certainly had no significant treatment for years, if ever (such treatment is, of course, rather expensive). You seem to rely on implying that others have less experience in this are than you, which is an assumption you should avoid. I don't find the suggestion to give to organizations that feed, clothe, and shelter the homeless upsetting. I find your dismissal of a huge number of people out of hand disturbing, as well as your apparent belief that a quarter to a homeless person always turns into alcohol in their hands. There's no reason not to give to charity organizations regularly and individual homeless randomly, unless you budget all your money out in advance and have no room for random behavior.
"They are the alcoholics, the drug addicts, the mentally insane. Their only goal in life is their next drink. You can institutionalize them or let them be on the street, but you can't help them."
I have no idea how a comment this odious got modded as insightful. There are services available that can and DO help members of all three of those groups recover and lead better, functional lives. While some mental illnesses may as yet be untreatable, many of the homeless in America could no doubt be helped were the medical system remotely responsive to the needs of the poor. Likewise, drug addicts and alcoholics recover all the time, it's such a normal part of society that I'm amazed that you would even say something like this. Perhaps it's different for you, but I know people who have recovered from such situations and gone on to have productive lives. Some people call them 'family,' and I think it's disgusting that you can dismiss them like that. Have you ever given a guy a sandwich and had it thrown back at you? Just because some people out there are going to use money to feed there addictions doesn't mean that all compassion for the homeless is wasted. Have a fucking heart.
But they're our Friends! (this is the motto that has let the US (and many other governments) give weapons/money/support/etc. to such friendly faces as Saddam Hussein, S. Vietnam, the Saudi dynasty, the Contras, etc. etc.)
Since we're already supporters of Mr. KGB and his new Tsarist state, we might as well get something out of it, like a crutch for our limping space program.
You have to remember that they are hiring women-only because everyone else is male. If there were 180 (or however many) women here and they tried to bring in some men, I think almost everyone would find it acceptable.
I think it's generally better to maintain some sort of gender balance than not to do so, just like I think it's better to support some sort of income/economic equality rather than having landed gentry with inherited fortunes and serfs. Of course, taking away some priveleges from the lords in my theoretical situation would be "classist," in a sense, but it would also be "good."
Make any games with ads free. And make any games you pay for free from ads.
This, however, is not going to happen. A good, and maybe very slightly possible, way to let the market decide would be to label any games with ads, so I can avoid them.
Lexus was a fairly inappropriate choice for that comparison, as they are one of the most reliable brands of car out there, and that certainly has something to do with why people who are in the luxury car market would choose them over Jaguar etc. etc.
A more apt comparison might be Rolls Royce, which sell largely on brand name, prettiness (in the eye of the beholder), and 'street cred' in much the same way alienware products do.
Gas mileage is not determined by the companies, it is determined by a set of specific tests under federal law. If you were able to run those tests and find a discrepancy, then you would have a case as far as fraud/mislabeling/etc. goes. Tests are quite easy to run on bandwidth, so it's an entirely different situation.
It's summer, they aren't in school.................It's perfectly reasonable for the secondary breadwinner to follow the primary breadwinner.
You aren't being as clever as you think. "Pulling children out of school" means making them leave friends at their current school, which will be the case regardless of whether it's summer or not. Furthermore, we have no evidence that the author IS the primary breadwinner.
I hope the Wii does well. This is not because I am a fan of the company (though they've done great work which has brought me much pleasure), but for a more pragmatic reason: I intend to buy one, and want lots of third-party support.
This is excellent news for people like me, and presumably Nintendo itself, because: a) SSB has become a marquee title for Nintendo, and it will be good to have this out in that first 6-months-to-a-year period b) this gives everyone an early answer on the question of GC controllers. Namely, on games where it's appropriate, we CAN expect the option of using the GC controller.
Though my budget for games seems to be much smaller than a lot of the people on/., I think I will be able to scrape up the funds for a Wii and a game every couple months. The way things are heading, I will have a huge supply of desirable games to choose from.
Japanese will understand the connection to the English word, as pretty much everyone knows the English word. The native Japanese ways of saying 'we' (wareware, warera, orera, bokutachi, watashitachi, atashitachi, watakushitachi, oretachi, bokura, oiratachi, etc.) don't sound like it, however
The English 'r' sound is not relevant

I don't know how far you are in your studies, but you should realize that the katakana version of 'revolution' will sound just like a legitimate word in Japanese, the same way that 'level up' has become a Japanese word, and countless others that include L/R sounds. Just because they don't make YOUR language's sound doesn't mean that they don't have a completely acceptable and obvious (to the Japanese) way of saying it. If you pronounce the 's' in Paris, do you feel taht invalidates it as a name of a city (or some commercial product) just because you'd sound like an idiot if you said that in France?
They are generally bad at English, but that doesn't mean they haven't studied it. I just wanted to correct want is presumably an American assumption that foreigners study English as rarely as Americans study foreign language X. The problem is the pronunciation, generally, as tests focus on vocabulary knowledge and grammar in a written context. The words also pop up everywhere. It's as impossible for a Japanese person to know no English as it is for an American to know ZERO Spanish (amigo, habla, Espanol, hombre, etc. are universal, pretty much).
As a math person (but not a math major), I feel your pain on the math topic, but that's just how it is, I guess. I personally enjoy using my brain on math, even just a little tip-calculating exercise.
I am just wondering how many people will be following the Nintendo conference, whether via webcasts or the usual website news (mind that F5 key!). Will it be the "largest" event related to gaming on the net?
That's a good point. If I were in even remotely the correct time zone, I am sure I would. As is, I hope to download it somewhere Wednesday. I have a PS2 now, but the Wii is the only one of the new consoles that I really an interested in. The others might be worth buying eventually, once they get some good exclusive games, but I really could care less about seeing some graphics upgrades etc. on my laptop screen that wouldn't matter on my 14-inch TV. The Wii is the only one that has a CONSOLE (and controller, rather than games) that itself will be a selling point, in my mind.
"Have you ever heard a Japanese person that's never studdied English attempt to say the word "Revolution?""
Two points: it turns into katakana just fine, though obviously it doesn't have the same pronunciation as the English. Point Two: 'A Japanese person that's never studied English' is about as common as an American person who has never studied math. It's required in school, and the majority of Japanese take at least 6 years of it.

is when people accept unquestioned the unspoken proposition that 'interfering with the market' is somehow inherently bad.

You mean the people who make the software you want don't support OSX? (Or windows, now, since that is supported on new macs) (or *nix)
