  1. Re:other games on An Elder Scrolls Retrospective · · Score: 1

Yeah, for some reason I didn't see those in the game listing when I first started going through the article.

Just in case anyone is interested there are 2 other non-RPG TES games:

    Redguard

I stil maintain that daggerfall was the best, barring it's incredibly nasty habit of eating your saved games every 10 minutes or so. I really liked the ability to buy horses with wagons, houses, and boats (I haven't played Oblivion yet so I'm not sure if they brought those features back).

    From the article:
"we didn't want to change it; we didn't want to ruin it."
uh... yeah. The core mechanic, maybe, but I'd say you can only loosely call the game counter-strike now. I find it funny that (I have been lead to believe) the japanese are pretty xenophobic when it comes to western games but a lot of the character designs are not only western but overtly caucasian. What's up with that?

boobies... and horses, houses, and boats you could buy. and a lot more intuitive quick travel feature. those are good, too.

  5. context on Real Warriors Trained In Virtual Worlds · · Score: 1

I think it needs to be said that the simulations the military are employing are part of an entire regiment designed to lower one's resistance to killing. Games in the living room are taking place in the context of your couch, where you really don't have that much pressure attempting to erode your resistances and predispositions. Long story short, games themselves don't make you a soldier but used in conjunction with other things they make an effective tool.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62_x_51_mm

I'm pretty sure the Soviets were not a part of NATO (being a Warsaw Pact nation) when the 7.62 round was developed, hence they wouldn't adopt it as standard issue. 7.62x39 is much more akin to a 5.56 NATO/.223 round because of the shorter length of the cartridge.

You sound like you know enough about this stuff that you should know the difference.

  12. Re:Lucrative? on Majoring in Video Game Design · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'd have a hard time suggesting that working in the game industry is a good way to make money. There's far more money to be made other places, except for a handful of lucky developers and designers.

this is true. the college i just graduated from, Columbia (Chicago) is just starting a game design major this year that branches out of the interactive media department. while everyone is excited about it, the first thing most of the faculty will tell you is "This industry will eat you alive." It's disappointing because I'd love to be creative and make entertaining things for a living, but at least no one has any hesitation about saving my ass by shattering my illusions that that is what I'd be doing.

And by saying a handful of designers is also dead on - some representatives from EA recently came over to discuss jobs in the field, and when prompted about designers, the rep said something along the lines of "we'll hire any animators we can find, but there's only 3 or 4 good designers in the whole business and we'd much rather pay them to design good games instead of wasting a lot of money of whatever you think up."
