  1. The first...? on First Internet-Connected Pacemaker Goes Live · · Score: 1

It's most likely a different brand, but my wife has had a wireless defibrillator / pacemaker implant since last October. It, too, wirelessly connects to a base in the house, which in turn talks to the doctor's office. They can also remotely activate tests and scans. We joke quite often that she's one of the only people we know that has their own wireless access point. Right before the surgery, the surgeon asked my wife if she had any questions. Her first question? "Um, this thing isn't running on Windows, is it?" He replied that she was the first person to ever ask that, and that it ran on a custom version of Unix.

In my experience, they DO ask. I was in a small traffic accident, and when the cop got out of his car, the first thing he asked was, "Is everyone ok?" Immediately following, he told us that we were being recorded by the camera in his car and a microphone, and that it was within our rights to request that it be turned off.

It was just a small accident, and it was resolved quickly, but I was surprised that A) he told us about the camera and B) told us we could request to have it turned off. Of course, this cop was extremely polite and helpful - so this just might be a "good cop/bad cop" sort of thing.

Mod parent up - they're completely correct, here. On June 11 I went down and picked up two new DS Lites - one for me, and one for my fiancee. I picked up New Super Mario Bros for myself, and Brain Age and Animal Crossing for her.

The very next week, she comes over with a "present" for me - she had bought me Mario Kart and my own copy of Animal Crossing, so we could play multiplayer. Now, realize, the ONLY other time she's gone into the store and bought a video game was to buy a game for me for Christmas or my birthday. And, even then, she already had known the name of the game and the price, since I'd "hinted" quite heavily.

However, this time, she would have had to go IN the store, browse the games, and decide which ones to buy - and, of course, she picked up two more for herself. We each have about 5 games for the DS, now, and we RARELY buy games - and, if we do, we buy them used. The DS Lite is the sole reason that we spent any money on video games last June, and I'm betting that this is the case for quite a few other people as well.

  11. Re:I Disagree. on Whatever Happened to the Gaming Mascot? · · Score: 1
I tend to think that often, when a game really had no replay value, the focus was on the mascot to try to make you think there was something special about the game because of the main character, when in fact the gameplay was horrible and not fun to play again and again, I.E. Mario Brothers. These were the days when you 'mastered' a game and then never played it again: you had played it out. Today games are so complex that a good one has immense replayability.
I have no idea what planet you are living on, but I will say this: I have played the original Super Mario Brothers more times than I can count. I played Super Mario Brothers 3 for countless hours as a child - we beat it hundreds of times, and it was just as enjoyable each time. In fact, I popped it in to play just the other day - I consider those games to be as far away from being "played out" as possible. The Mario games work not because of some animated plumber - they work because they're pure gaming gold. Perhaps I'm just getting old, but if I'm given the choice between a Mario game and ANY game released in the last year...

    I'd pick Mario.

So, because they had three different ads, that makes it "not racist"? Alright. Here's an idea - A company releases an ad campaign with three different images. In one, a member of the Ku Klux Klan is shoving down a black. In another, a black is shoving down a member of the Ku Klux Klan. And, in the third, it shows the two of them hugging. An extreme (and highly imperfect) example, perhaps, but do the latter two make the first one "not racist?" Are you arguing that it's possible to be "equal opportunity" racist?

How, exactly, does that reasoning work?

  13. I Cry BS on Sony And The No-Confidence Vote · · Score: 1

Your comments seem highly suspect to me, as I went into a GameStop just yesterday to ask about preordering a Wii - and I was told that GameStop was not yet taking ANY orders for the Wii, because a launch date has yet to be announced. Also? The manager said that most of the stores were having an extremely hard time selling ANY preorders for the PS3 - and the manager also told me that she herself wouldn't be buying one. Now, true, the manager could have been lying to me - but it seems to me that if they'd lie, they'd try to get me to BUY one, not tell me facts that would destroy a potential sale.

  15. Re:Yeah, well... on Ken Kutaragi's Famous Last Words · · Score: 1
The thing is, his expensive restraunt analogy doesn't hold up. Sony's problem isn't that the PS3 costs $600, it's that it costs a good $200 more than either of the other two consoles. And, what's more, there really isn't a tangible benefit yet. Everything I've seen thus far shows the 360 to have comprable graphical ability to the PS3. Add in XBox Live, and all of a sudden I'm running out of reasons to spend that extra $200. They added tilt recognition to the PS3 controllers? Well, that's great, but I'll be able to get a Wii for about $250, it looks like. Really, the only thing that Sony has an advantage on right now is Blu-Ray - which could very easily end up like Sony's UMD disks.

The fact is, it's not that I don't like to eat at a nice fancy restraunt once in a while - it's just that if I have a choice between several restraunts, all with the same quality of food and service, I'm going to pick the one that costs the least.

Again, Sony's problem isn't the $600 price tag - it's the fact that you very well may be able to buy both a Wii AND a 360, and spend less than you would if you bought a PS3. If they don't recognize this soon, they might as well kiss their 70% market share goodbye.

This article makes it sound like you have to be an engineer to send a letter.

You may not have to be an engineer to send a letter, but to design an envelope that protects the DVD being sent while minimizing cost and customer frustration is quite a bit more complicated than simply sending a letter.

By continually evaluating and optimizing their envelopes, Netflix has been able to both save quite a bit of money (as someone above pointed out, saving 1 cent on every envelope adds up quick when you're sending out millions of envelopes a year) and design a sturdy envelope that is remarkably simple and easy to use. Good design should never be laughed at.

I'm not sure if I'd go this far - have you seen this episode of "Without a Trace"? I don't neccessarily agree with the ruling, but to say that "...there was no nudity in the show, no sex in the show, no foul language in the show, and nothing that anyone could have pointed to in advance and said "this is obscene content"" is stretching it a little bit. The scene was basically a teen-age orgy - and while "the naughty bits" weren't shown, there were plenty of bare backs (both male and female), side shots, and groping. Add in the girls clad only in bras and panties grinding their hips on the guys, and well... Color me not surprised. I don't *agree* with the ruling, but I'm not surprised, either.

This is exactly what we need, at this point - if it can be shown just how helpful stem stell research can be, then perhaps people will start to view it not as a thing to be feared, but a thing to be looked into and studied. And, as noted, by not using embryonic cells controversy is avoided. It's a win-win-win situation: the kids get treated, the research is given a better name, and the ultra-conservatives shouldn't be upset about it.
