  1. Re:I must confess on In-Game Ads Make Products More Appealing · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you think those products are cool just because they were shown to you in a video game, you're a serious tool my good man. Just the kind of fool these marketting drones are trying to reach.

Do us all a favor and don't be a consumer whore, because being the mindless corporate zombie who just gobbles up whatever is put in front of them is not going to make our games any better. Thanks.

  2. They work great! on Study Indicates In-Game Ads Actually Work · · Score: 1

Since you publisher-fellows have obviously chosen to make your revenue via an alternative method, I'm sure you won't mind that I refuse to pay for your games that have ads in them.

    Thanks! They really do work!

  3. Yes and No on BioWare Shares Information on Sonic RPG · · Score: 1

I can agree that Bioware isn't what it used to be. Too big, and I don't have much faith in them though they do turn out some nice products on occasion, just not super innovative. (I gawked at the "what a bioware rpg is" comment, they take themselves too seriously there).
Regardless, I am a developer working on the Unreal 3 Engine. This is the best licensable engine in the industry right now, period. There is no limit to the quality you can push through it aside from the hardware you're on and the talent of your team. This comes from experience and knowledge, take my word for it.
That aside, sadly 90% of the screenshots you will ever, EVER see from any media outlet or "press release" or whatever, is doctored. Every one. All publishers are shit-eating liars. That's another thing that comes from knowledge and experience (though I wish it weren't so).

  7. Re:Will Wright... on News of Spore Delay Miscommunication · · Score: 1

The only project Will Wright touches at EA currently is Spore. The Sims team is a completely seperate entity, and the Sim City project was outsourced entirely.

What is probably going on here is that they are either finding a way to inject actual subjective gameplay into the game, to give it more structure for those who don't "get" sandbox games. Or they're looking find a way for EA to limit it in some way so they can release addons at later dates and turn it into a milkable franchise (which it's current design does not mesh well with).

  8. This is pure bullshit on Why Next-Gen Titles Cost $60 · · Score: 1, Troll

This article is a work of fiction on a hilarious level. "Next-Gen" titles cost $60 because the greed of publishers demands it. Publishers get the majority of the profits, developers only get the amount it actually takes to develop the game and pay their employees. I can't believe the writers of this have the gall to say otherwise.
For the record I've worked in the industry for 15 years. There doesn't seem to be a hair of truth in this article.

  12. Hi There on Guitar Hero Is Big Hit With Bands · · Score: 5, Insightful

Hi, and welcome to the world of marketting.

This article was not written to talk about the bands in question and their love of playing a video game. It was written to give exposure to the Guitar Hero franchise of games, and bring attention to the impending release of the game's sequel, which is now an MTV property (who incited the writing of this article to generate sales).

Now that you realize your error for even giving it attention, please take your haughty "Hi I'm a real musician, allow me to tell you how much better I am than you" attitude elsewhere. It's really worse than the brainwashing corporations responsible for this kind of media in the first place.

    Thanks.

  13. Re:What's the purpose of E3? on New E3 Show Announced - Smaller and Invite-only · · Score: 1

  14. My own recommendations on 50 Books for Everyone in the Games Industry · · Score: 3, Interesting

You could come up with this same list of books by just visiting your local bookstore and picking up everything on games. He only mentions a few things outside of that. Disappointing.

I'd hoped he was going to recommend reading books like, say, Charles Dickens, or some Oscar Wilde, or a science magazine. Nothing is better to draw inspiration from than media you have very little contact with already. I think if you sat a developer down with a pile of game books, and another developer down with a pile of classic literature or something, the latter would ultimately produce the more unique experience because he would be exposed to new ideas outside of the realm of interactive media.

    Just a thought.

  15. Piracy Encouraging More Sales on Pirates Vs. Publishers · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have bought a vast amount more software thanks to trying it out via pirate-distrobution first. Simple as that. Goes the same for music, movies, etc.

If they want to bitch about lost sales to me, I'll call them on their lying marketting and slanted, paid-off reviews. It's all about publishers wanting control when it comes down to it, and pointing fingers when a shitty game doesn't sell.

If they could spin it they'd have people buying the most terrible crap out there for $60 a pop (haha), as every magazine review and media outlet hails it as a hallmark of interactivity. No thanks. I'll continue to bittorrent and decide for myself who gets my money.

  17. Re:Money on ESA Pushing for Gamers to Vote · · Score: 1

I only view profit as evil if something morally wrong is done to achieve it (which is often sadly is, but that's not my point). The issue I took with this was only that the possibility that games *might actually be* harmful to minors was completely brushed aside. As soon as that bottom line gets threatened, it doesn't matter one way or the other.
That's why I can't blindly support something like this. It's not about the profit as much as ignoring the issue's bring brought forth about the medium in the first place.

  18. Money on ESA Pushing for Gamers to Vote · · Score: 2, Insightful

The problem I see with this is that the only reason there is any movement for pushing gamers to vote is so the industry doesn't lose out with money. No one involved in this cares about the issue as much as it's threat to their pocketbook.
I am a member of the IGDA, a developer, and I don't want to see free speech be limited any more than the next person. But when the IGDA directors started spamming my inbox last year trying to rally folks to fight against legislation for limiting game sales to minors, it didn't matter if games actually were harmful to the psychology of adolescents, it was just a perceived threat of lower sales that drove them to action.
I can agree with saving our civil rights and our artform, but I can't agree with blindly following these decisions and encouraging others to fight for it solely based on profit.

  22. Simple2000 on Attack of the B-Grade Games · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems like this article really just wants to push the games in question, considering they're all "AAA" (whatever that means) titles with lots of marketing and existing online following. It's too bad he doesn't review some real B-rate titles. In Japan there is a budget line of games titled Simple2000 (costing 2000 yen, or 20 bucks a pop). Some of these games are the best entertainment I've had in years. One in particular, Earth Defense Force 2, is some of the most insanely fun gaming I've ever experienced. You defend the cities of earth from giant 1950s-esque alien invaders in a fully destructible environment with the most weapons and action I've ever seen in a game to date. Look up some videos of it, it doesn't disappoint (co-op too).
All the Simple2k games are relatively shallow, made on a basement-development budget, but have a few gems here and there, so it's too bad coverage of them doesn't make slashdot on occasion. Titles like "Zombie Vs. Ambulance" just scream B-rated movie-game.

I'm on a project at work right now that has us digitially recreating a major city in the US. Because of this we need oodles of reference photo's, which sees us flying to said city frequently and snapshotting every major landmark and building style we can find.

We have been stopped *numerous* times by police and private guards for taking photos of buildings anywhere from the simplest little house to the most public business buildings in downtown. We have narrowly avoided having our cameras confiscated and others in my group have said they believe they would be confiscated if we took images of government buildings.

I don't care about the allegations that people may use these photos for "bad things", it feels to me that this is just more about control and supression than logical safety policy. So when the parent poster said "No pictures of architecture -- might be casing the joint" I thought I'd chime in and say "Already happened, buddy"...

    Suggestions please!
