  8. "there seems to be no excitement level at all" on John Dvorak On Vista's Launch · · Score: 4, Interesting

I think Microsoft made a big mistake by releasing Vista to businesses first. I think consumers are somewhat excited about Vista or will be when the majority of them actually see Aero in action. In general, businesses don't need Vista or care about the new thing because however you want to package it, its going to cost them more money. The only thing accurate about this article is that Vista will not be a flop because it won't be long before you can only buy a new computer with Vista on it. As that happens, and as more computers get into the hands of consumers, business will have to catch up.

  11. Re:Online Media vs Print Media on Official PlayStation Magazine Discontinued · · Score: 1
Let's face it -- it's the age where news hits the web days or weeks before it can ever see the light of day in print media.

I want to agree with this, but everytime I pick up a game magazine, I find something in there that I was not aware of before. Maybe it hits the web, but the developer isn't sending truckloads of cash to the web's gaming sites?? And I think XBox has demo disks more for the Original XBox owners than for 360 owners. Plus they can put video content on there so XBox owners can see what they are missing on the 360. And, I still think Gamecube would have done a bit better if people could at least try out 1st and 3rd party gameswithout making a $30-$50 investment.

I'd see Nintendo taking Japan before Microsoft. All Nintendo has to do is release WiiHD in 7 months and then there would be something to talk about. WiiHD will have HDMI out and a bit more graphical punch and all the future games will play on a standard Wii or WiiHD. Just think of how fast GBA SP or DS Lite came down the pike... Nintendo is very good at taking what is great and making it just that much better.

  14. Unless you can code it yourself... on Selling Independent MP3s Direct to Customer? · · Score: 1

I mean someone is going to be the middleman no matter what. The least you are going to pay someone is if you could implement it all yourself, but even that would come at the cost of all your time.

Do this: Incorporate yourself as an indie label and talk to iTunes or eMusic. From what I understand Apple doesn't make much (if anything) on Music sales. They are in it to sell iPods. Users can always burn Apple's tunes to CD and then reimport, so their DRM isn't that bad (IMO). Anyway, I doubt you are going to find a way to get to your listeners in a way that is much easier on them than iTunes. Then again, maybe you don't like iTunes price to users. emusic tends to be more economical per track (unless you are a punk band that writes thirty-five 1 minute songs for an album.) I have no clue about emusic's payoff to record labels. Write Dischord records and find out. Those guys are awesome and I bet they'd help you out. They are not really in it to make duckets, they just want to document the DC scene.

  15. This tech won't work. on Smart Cameras Detect Crime, Erode Privacy · · Score: 2, Insightful

Problem is that people get frantic and excited about things and its even hard for a human being to read the situation sometimes. I mean if a girl yelps as a guy is picking her up off her feet, is it an abduction or is it playfulness with a gleeful squeal? If two guys are rushing into one another, it might just be horseplay. One of the funniest things I remember from my college days was when one of our buddies toppled a friend of ours into the bushes when they were both drunk. Many would see this as violent, but nobody got pissed off about it... Now you could point to the glorious AI... You can tout AI all you want, but have you ever seen how long it takes to RAISE a child; to teach it language and context and everything that goes into being a member of a society... There are thousands upon thousands of hours of love (or hate) that go into this teaching of people about what it is to be human and to be alive? Sure, you can teach a computer to look things of semantic nature up, but eventually after all those dictionary searches a computer MIGHT be able to surmise that if you unplug it that it turns off and it may never be turned back on again. Now ask that SMART computer if it cares. It'll never understand what care means because it doesn't get hungry or sad or scared and so it has no ability to sympathize with a living thing.

When the Gamecube came out and was based on an optical disc, one of the first things I thought of was "Oh, cool, they'll put demo discs into Nintendo Power and I will actually subscribe again!" Sadly, it never happened. There was one demo disc I remember that sold and it was awesome - Sonic, Viewtiful Joe, Splinter Cell... I think I would have bought more Gamecube games if I could have had one of those in my hands every month. I'd really like to see this rectified with the Wii. Maybe pressed demo discs will a thing of the past, but serving up demo content via download shouldn't be too difficult.

  19. Design Patterns on Taking Your Programming Skills to the Next Level? · · Score: 1

Not sure if your curriculum covered Design Patterns or not, but if you were well versed in them, I doubt you'd be feeling like you weren't reaching the "Next Level." Head First Design Patterns is a great book IMO. Also, go looking for stuff you don't already know. Aspect Oriented Programming is fascinating. Ruby on Rails is cool if you've never seen it. If you want a challenge, try writing about programming and see how fast you find you HAVE to ramp up. Thing is, once you see something, you have to use it to become an expert. Also, be clear about what an expert is! As a novice you are still learning "What" as in what to do. As a practitioner, you'll know "How" as in how to do it (just about every time). But if you want to be a true expert, it will be about "Who" as in who should the community look to as a thought leader - if you are an expert the answer will be YOU. Be warned, a lot of practitioners AND novices will try to claim to be experts, but ask them about the articles they've written or who exactly reveres them as an expert... Also, lots of this has to be done on your own time if you are not willing to go out and get THE JOB for you. And honestly, if you are not willing to do that, how likely are you to spend your own time getting to "The Next Level" anyway?
