Same here, me and a couple of friends just shared our music a few weeks ago, so we now each have 160gb of music to listen to. I did some little maths, and concluded that if i listen to 2 new albums a day from what i got from them, i should have enough for more than 2 years. God bless external HD. Now we have to wait for portable Mp3 players to catch up with the capacity :)

    GM: Loss of $10bn
    Chevron: $14bn
    Ford: $2bn.

To make calculations for these 2 industries like they both make 10% in profits is ridiculous.

  12. Re:Some people just don't get it.... on Why Sony Should've Put Its Weight Behind Hi-MD · · Score: 1

Honest answer: It's called instant gratification.

I don't really need to listen to music all the time, but i don't particularly dig ambient sounds from the city, so if i can be listening to music instead, the choice is simple. Time seems to fly by much faster if you're walking while listening to music. Ditto for the car. I don't particularly like driving to begin with, and radio is pure crap to me, so if i can have my music to pass the time in a more pleasing way then why not?

  15. Don't judge a book by its cover on Sandals and Ponytails Behind Slow Linux Adoption · · Score: 1

Simple answer. I know it's cliché to say this, but to me it's very true.

Not everyone in a suit is an arrogant asshole, not is everyone wearing casual clothes is trustable.

If you consider that a women wearing a suit is automatically a lying hypocrite than you are no better than the suit guy who doesn't trust you because you're not wearing a suit. Perhaps the girl in a suit dresses like that because she likes it. Who knows? I sure don't assume to know her motives for dressing that way.

  16. And some other strange statistics... on Adults Love Video Games · · Score: 1
The survey results also suggest female gamers outnumber male gamers in the 25-34 age category. This result stems from high rates of play of online games, many of which are free of charge (i.e. Yahoo! Games), among female gamers. The 25-34 age group also comprises the largest concentration among overall female gamers (29 percent).
Ok perhaps it would've been a good idea to define the term "Gamer". As far as i can tell, their definition emcompasses anyone who plays any type of game, including solitaire, online poker, bejewled, chess and whatnot. Not that there's anything wrong with this definition, but i'm sure it's not the definition that most people here would give for "Gamer". It still makes me wonder where they took these stats, because i have a hard time believing that there are more female gamers than male gamers in the 25-34 age bracket. Of all the males of that age that i know, there is a vast majority playing videogames. Of that the girls i know, only a handful do play videogames. Perhaps my empirical evidence is atypical, but i'd like to be proved otherwise. And if i look that people 35 and older (which means, most people i work with), i would be surprised if more than 10-15% played videogames.
  17. Re:No different on Dismantling the Myth of IT Being a Dead-End Career · · Score: 3, Interesting

The big answer is: it depends. It depends on what type of work you do, what type of company you work for, and if you do contract or permanent work. One question you have to ask yourself: am i learning new things in my current work, and if not, how will that affect my future career path. I consider that when i stop learning new stuff (and provided that nothing new is on the way if i stay there), it's time to look for something else, otherwise it means that i'll stagnate and will be getting behind technologically. Which means that in a few years when i want to look for something else, it will be harder to find something better. For me, that time usually comes after about 2 years. But then again, i'm doing web-related work, so it might be different from more "traditional" IT fields.

Generally speaking, i would say that unless you're working for a big company where there is potential for advancement, staying more than 4-5 years is probably bad for your career. Simply put, when you switch company you learn more and get way more chances for advancement (both in terms of position and salary). But as you say, be careful not to switch too often.
