regulations governing digital television apparatus necessary to control the indiscriminate redistribution of digital television broadcast content over digital networks
Wonder what would happen if for some reason the FCC decided it was OK to redistribute content over digital networks.....:-)
If you live near one of these http://www.smsonline.com/centers/index.html you can ride a close to life size Nascar car that moves a little. About 10 are networked together and you race against each other. The race is projected onto a screen in front of you.
...a stray blaster shot damages the flux capacitor and he ends up going back too far in time. He uses parts from his light saber to fix the capacitor, but the DeLorean's Mr. Fusion is broken and he needs a way to power the car. Unfortunately he is stuck in a primitive time. Then he hears about a powerful force and sets out on a long, perilous journey to find the "one ring to rule them all"....
I think Microsoft is in the weakest position it's been in in a long time. Their new OS has been delayed. Their browser is full of holes. VB 6 developers are not moving to.net like they hoped. Their new OS will contain a lot of DRM that nobody wants. Mac and Linux are both making inroads. This is a prime time to get people to switch to something else.
1. Spend server maintaince money on expensive "Star Wars" license: Good 2. Get story posted to Slashdot front page: Good 3. Servers get slashdotted: Bad
Everyone here seems to be anti-Dvorak. But I bet most of you would agree with his comments about Bill Gates's immigration comments. For Dvorak's blog:
I seriously do not understand what they are thinking at Microsoft to make these sorts of public comments. Ballmer said something like this some months back and I emailed him about it and he was baffled by my email. They apparently do not see any of this as a "hot potato" issue that can have negative implications on sales. This is total isolation from reality. In this case Gates has physically gone to Washington to go door-to-door on this issue.
Saturday Night Live uses the exact graphics from other companies in their paraodies. But then again SNL isn't very funny, so maybe that doesn't count...
It's amazing what people will waste mod points on to mod down. They'll even mod down stuff that's currently at 1, even thought it would have stayed toward the bottom anyway.
The source code is available. You could have students in programming classes tinker with it as part of their assignments. Then if you ever need a change/bug fix, you could go to them and ask for it. Of course, I would reward then in same way.
"today proclaimed at an internal company meeting that if the servers aren't slashdotted and the download numbers of the new Opera 8 Web browser reach 1 million within the first four days of the launch"
known as Kha-Nyou to the locals
How could it be discovered if it's already known to someone?

then changing the show times so you couldn't catch them
:-)
Yet another reason to buy a TiVo...
MTV -- "Music Television"
its MTV what else could you expect?
Certainly not music.

Obi-Wan is driving the DeLorean and...

---Spoiler Warning---
Obi-Wan walks into a room full of toys and video games. Anakin is playing Super Mario Brothers.
Obi: "Where did you get all this stuff!"
Ana: "I've been using the force like you taught me."
Obi: "You stole all this stuff?!"
Ana: "Of course not."
Obi: "Then what did you do?"
Ana: "I used the force to see into the future..."
Obi: "And....?"
Ana: (Looking down at the floor. Knowing he's in trouble) "...and....and...I used it to find the winning numbers in the Naboo Lottery...."
Obi: "Anakin!"
Do you have a nice logo? It might make you look more professional and worthy of funding.

Because of the internal representation (0x1039), I don't think the last digit can be higher than nine. I'm sure a Mac programmer can correct me.

....why can't we build a website to survive a slashdotting?

...and providing these services already, there would be no need for the cities to be doing it.
How can the government be 'intervening' if the company isn't even doing anything in that area?

Seems like a lot of money for a little wire
:-)
You've obviously never priced oscilloscope probe wires before.
I wonder if Microsoft has internal battles like this. The great thing about "open" source is that we get to see all this. :-)
I'd like to see J.M. Straczynski take a shot at it.

auto-defragmenting in the background
Another annoying "I know you don't know what you're doing so I'll do it for you" "feature" to turn off.
the ability to have files in more than one folder simultaneously
Hasn't Linux/Unix had that for years?
and the new ad campaign Microsoft is running to get people excited about Windows
They did one of those when Windows 95 was released ("Start it up!")
Nothing new to see here, move along.
"today proclaimed at an internal company meeting that if the servers aren't slashdotted and the download numbers of the new Opera 8 Web browser reach 1 million within the first four days of the launch"
Is it just me or did the jump from version 3 to 4 happen a lot faster than the one from 2 to 3?
