Wait, in one breathe you claim the high ground in how you support PC game companies by paying for their products. And you accuse those who pirate of bankrupting game studios.

In the next breathe you say how you circumvent paying movies studios by buying used DVDs (I know those aren't your words, but that is essentially what you are doing). You realize that studios don't get your money right?

You can't have it both ways. You can't berate others for bankrupting one industry while advocating doing it to another (or at least minimizing their profits).

And FTR I have never downloaded a PC game or other software illegally so I am not defending those that do. I am just wondering how your comment got modded insightful when it doesn't quite compute for me.

And I would like to say 40 from Asia and and 11 from Europe.

The fact is, although I know the distinction is lost on some, that, while technically China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao are all "Chinese", they are not one culture. Heck even those from mainland China are not all one culture. I have had friends from each country and some identify more with their region than with "China" (that is especially true of those from Taiwan).

Personally I am not so troubled with your comment, which I think was made in jest. But being modded +5 informative? Why? Funny maybe, but informative, hardly.

You mean like with popular music? Big labels bought indie labels in the 70s/80s/90s and now most popular music has a sameness to it. Now the labels complain that people don't buy their music anymore. When there is a sameness to games because there are only a few big game companies, people will probably stop buying games as well.

First off, YouTube is not "breeding" anything. I hate to break out the old "Guns don't kill people...." line, but idiots post stupid things on YouTube, YouTube does not create its own content. There are also some very informative videos posted (though the signal to noise ratio is still rather low.) Second, scientific journals hold a lot of blame. YouTube is viewer generated content available for free to anyone interested to watch. I can post great, informative videos, or a video of my cat playing with a ball of yarn. But anyone can watch it if they want. Peer review, informative journals are usually kept behind locked doors, unless you are willing to pay an admission fee. If more scientific studies were available for free and written so the common person could understand, then that could counter balance much of the disinformation spread on YouTube (or Google Video for that matter) or through Blogs.

  21. Re:Back to the Future on Singles, Not Albums, Define Music Industry Success · · Score: 2, Interesting

I somewhat agree with your first sentence, then are opinions diverge. Albums didn't promote the 33 1/3, it was the other way around. The LP allowed artists (or forced them) to come up with musical ideas that lasted longer then 3 minutes. The CD was the same way. And I don't think the album will die out, it will find a new equilibrium in the digital market. That point may be 50/50 or 20/80, I don't know.

But record labels can save the album with a few tweeks in the system, such as lowering the prices on CDs or releasing their strangle hold on radio and more importantly, internet radio.

  22. A Number Of Reasons on Singles, Not Albums, Define Music Industry Success · · Score: 3, Interesting

    1. The cost of an album is not in line with the the cost of the single. Singles on an album are songs with the greatest value in terms of demand. Labels can charge a buck because people will pay it. People will not pay a buck a piece for the filler songs.

    2. Maybe singles are selling because labels are focusing on making good singles (though that is debatable). At the least they are working harder to market them.

    3. Singles sell because radio plays the single and nothing else on the album. Radio exposure = sales.

    4. CD is the medium of albums and downloaded files are the medium of the single. As music downloads go up, so does the sales of singles.

    5. As a correlary, as oulets for CDs sales dry-up, so do sales of CDs (I.E. B&M stores).

  23. Re:Most likely negotiation tactics or... on Universal Refuses To Renew On iTunes · · Score: 2, Insightful

With ipod's installed user base and looking at life before the iTunes store, it might mean more CD sales and going back to ripping from CDs to get the music on an iPod. Or it could mean more P2P downloading of Universals music (I.E. pirating). Exclusive deals for the Zune are not necessarily in Universals best interest nor will it necessarily hurt Apple.
