If you want to be extra paranoid, then I would suggest using and modifying these templates to suit your needs. http://csrc.nist.gov/itsec/guidance_WinXP.html

It is what I currently use on my laptop and I haven't had any problems since I implemented it over two months ago. Also, if you want to install stuff, there's a sudo program for windows http://home.toadlife.net/winsudo/ that you might want to check out.

  3. Hot Towel and fish oil on Contact Lenses for Computer Professionals? · · Score: 1

My opthomologist recomended that I place a hot towel on top of my eyes once a day or so (I have moderate dry eye and contact lenses SUCK, and make sure you close your eyes BEFORE you put the hot towel on!) and he also suggested fish oil supplements. He told me the side effect of fish oil was that it made the tears a bit bigger so that would leave my eye lubricated more (same as with the hot towel, plus the steam supposedly helps clear out the tear ducts). Don't know if that is true or not because later I got that custom lasik with intralase. $5000 bucks, but after 23 years of myopia, I'm free of coke bottle glasses and contacts. Joy.

  5. Re:advice on Advice on Learning Japanese? · · Score: 1
    Parent has excellent advice.

Also, it has been said the best way to learn any language is to live in the country where it is spoken. I currently live in Japan, in the country where barely anyone speaks English, and even fewer speak it well. My Japanese skill is by far from perfect, however while I studied the language one of my professors told me to actively seek out situations where you are forced to speak Japanese and guage how well you did, etc. I have joined a bunch of clubs where no one speaks English (however, one does speak Spanish so I can still communicate!). At first, it sucked. Royally. It was frustrating as hell trying to communicate with the people, but if you make an effort, the people WILL respond in like and do their best to communicate with you, etc. Yes, it is a stressful thing to learn a new language, but believe you me, the rewards greatly outweigh the hell you go through learning the language.

I am still far from fluent, but now I can be functional at the office and even chat with the other teachers once in a while, albeit nothing philosophical, just stuff about work, sports, and small talk.

Also, vocabulary and grammar do not make a language. The culture is also vital in learning the language. That is why many top linguists can talk about a culture based on the way the language is used. Basically they can reconstruct the culture (or a good deal of it) just by studying the language and its nuances. =)

I fail to see how hard it is to quit these so called "addictions". I've been reading some comments and although I agree with trying to help out the friend, zounds man!, if he doesn't want to quit let him get burned. Nothing like a swift kick to the nuts (metaphorically speaking and perhaps RL too) that is getting fired and losing more than the job to get the friend to truly wake up and see how much of his life he has squandered away on a rather insignificant game (yea yea, wow is best mmo evar, etc etc. grow up, its just a game).

While not exactly the same, I started smoking when I was 16. Got up to two packs a day. One day I woke up and realised that a.) cigarettes were really expensive and b.) they were detrimental to my health. I was also an alcoholic at an early age too.

You just stop doing it. Yes, it's that easy. People say that it's hard or impossible to quit addictions because of withdrawal, etc. Nonesense. It's all in your head. Just stop and see how these things are impacting your life and that's reason enough to quit.

    Just my two cents...

I also love reading up on the latest football scores from Colombia and the Premiership as well as foreign politics. And of course Slashdot.

True, however you must remember this is from ancient times in China where women were to be obidient (gee, the more things change the more they stay the same, eh?).

I would assume they (or rather their families) receive some sort of payment, though. Usually only the rich old geezers would be interested in this in order to retain their status/power/etc.

Sadly, this practice is still ongoing, which is why pedophilia is quite common in asian countries. Take Japan for instance: a teacher gets busted shagging a schoolgirl but only gets busted for "upbringing and wholesome education" laws instead of pedophilia.
