I think the article you linked is very opinionated, but the conclusion and the reader comments are cogent enough - I'm placing my money on Mr. Card as a person who thinks sexuality is a decision, and who may be constantly fighting to pick the "right" side, against his nature.

An average TV channel in SD is about 2-4mbps. HD channels run up to 18mbps. Current coaxial cables carry 38mbps per frequency. VHS is approx. equal to SD. DvD standard maximum bitrate is 9.8mbps. Blue ray is 40mbps. SO the "huge improvement" is 4x more data for the same signal... I think this is pretty huge, but no, I don't have a Blue Ray player.
Television and movies are the same industry, still, so they're not going to want to obliterate each other: If you can buy media on disc, then the TV guys are going to have to figure out a way to send it to premium customers, or at least come close. So if the next medium (holographic storage) is going to up the bitrate again, then we'll be seeing cable companies start the push to FIOS.. in fact, they already are (I'd link to that Canadian company selling last mile FIOS to people).
IPTV and VOD services, kinda like the olympics this year but more complete, will really step things up. Then perhaps the storage medium won't matter, if our networks are all fiber.
I've heard one theory that the Polynesians et all actually were forced out of northern Asia to the south and the east. They walked over the bridge and floated through the oceans to all the little islands, and the New World. There, they found another people, who they had to fight to survive; being from a hostile background, they were better fighters.
So they chased the inhabitants down throughout the Americas, to the very tip of Argentina and Chile. Most of the men were killed and most of the women were taken, however several thousand took to the ocean, and floated along the West Wind Drift.. to Australia!
(The theory was based on genetic evidence that a chickens were introduced to the New World by Polynesians, and that there is a genetic trail on some human female populations in S.A. that links them to Australians.)

If I'm reading something, I sure don't want to be staring at a lightbulb. I bet if they come out with a transparent screen that they can print black / white/ whatever color on, and put it in a folder that contrasts with the font well, it would sell great.
Hopefully no one (or everyone) gets the copyright from the drugs, and the researchers are just doing this from the sheer goodness in their hearts that drives them to find the cure to cancer. . .
