  1. Re:So long Music Industry... on Media Research Exec Says Music Industry Is On Its Last Legs · · Score: 1

The "Music Industry" isn't going anywhere. It's simply going to shed some weight, adapt, but it won't die. The old guard will pass away. However, as long as people make music and as long as somebody listens to music, the "industry" will be alive and well. It's just the groups that can give people what they want that will be bringing in the money, or if nothing else, simply have an audience.

  2. Re:consider some of the top selling games... on Striking Writers May Work on Games · · Score: 1

Sports games are a wash. You play sports. Though perhaps a 'career mode' could benefit from a story. Some how work your franchises team and player into a story. Complete with the modern soap opera events of todays sports. I don't know might be something new and interesting. Civilization? I think that's a shoe in for a great story. Warcraft, well games of this type already have a story so I think things stay the same here. Though if the strike brought new writers, it wouldn't surprise me at all if some soap opera writer crafted an excellent story for a game.

Along a different line of thinking. Have you ever played a video game (a violent one) with somebody and become worried that they would harm you? How often have you had a political or religious discussion where people became openly hostile. So while these studies are looking into violence and gaming, they should take a good look at religion and politics. I wonder which they would find is worse.

Ahh, but STNG would not be what is was without the sum of its parts. For better or for worse, Wesley Crusher was a core element of the series even if he was only a minor character (no pun intended). Poor writers = Kobayashi Maru.

  8. Re:That's the bit that gets me, the console makers on US Senators Take On The ESRB Over Manhunt 2 · · Score: 1

The console makers are a bit odd in that they want to be family oriented yet provide adult (17+) games. Why an 18+ game makes them less family oriented than a non family friendly 17+ title I don't know. I wish they would cut the crap and allow AO games. However, the real issue is the bias the senators have against games versus movies and music. Does Manhunt deserve an Adult rating? I haven't played it yet so that's tough to say, but to be perfectly honest, there isn't much that does warrant such a rating.

The goal of the senators isn't to get an adult rating so parents know it's an adult game. A mature rating already accomplishes that. The goal of forcing an adult rating is to prevent the release of a product to the wider, adult market. The object to the material out of hand and could care less about the children.

Content in many games that receive a mature rating would barely hit PG-13 for the movies the equivalent TV rating. To be perfectly honest, I treat all of these ratings as PG. That's Parental Guidance folks. As a parent, a Mature rating lets me know that a game may not be suitable for my kid. I can check out the game and decide if it is or not. The rating system worked. As an adult, if something hits that AO rating because of some senator, then I know what they did was out of their personal morals and no real desire to help my kid. And to be perfectly honest it's not their job. As another poster said, these senators need to get to work going something useful.

So who's fighting the battle? Nintendo has never tried to being a media mogul and continues to thrive making games. I hope they don't change their game plan. Microsoft on the other hand is trying to be a jack of all trades and at this point has only managed to get one thing right. Yes, the Xbox is a great console to play games on. It's more than a tad lackluster in the media department. I have a 360 elite. Do you really think a 120 gig drive is going to get me very far with downloadable HD content? Not really. It will get me a bit farther if with a music type store. Ok, so you say we'll soon have HD movies, gaming and internet all wrapped up into one device. Guess what. My computer does all that. Where have you been? I want Microsoft to work to improve in the gaming department. Not go and muck with music and movies.

  12. Re:Wiiiii! on The Latest From the Front in the Console Wars · · Score: 1

It's not much of a war. I used to be pretty anti-console. Now I have a DS (and plan to buy a second), Wii and 360 (Mass Effect has been ordered). As far as games go there are a few titles on each platform that I want to get. So at least as far as I'm concerned, Nintendo has managed to put out a few titles that keep me playing it. My biggest gripe is that the Wii is limited to 420p and that many of the games are designed at 420i And my big gripe for all the consoles is accessibility to independent developers. I would absolutely love to make games for the consoles. But the companies make it far to expensive a market to enter for somebody on a very slim budget. I think all of the consoles would benefit if they made developing for their consoles more accessible.

  13. Re:The MMORPG market SUCKS. on World of Warcraft Hits 9.3 Million Players · · Score: 1

I took a break from WOW a short while back and tried out LOTRO. I think it's a worthy entry into the market but suffers from a number of things that made me drop it after a month. My issues with it were primarily in gameplay and animation. Many gameplay mechanics were just not fluid and coupled with poor animations, the feel of the game just wasn't up to par. On the other hand the environments were really great. Guild Wars continues to be a solid game. I like the fact that I can just jump in any time and play. With the addition of the heroes, you really don't need a group for the most part. The big reason I don't play it often comes down to a design element of the game. It's essentially a nice big world with you locked into corridors. If you're at the top of a hill, you can't just jump down, you can only go where it was designed that you can walk. It really bugs me.
