I'm sure that its not merely the destination, but also the journey that needs to be known beforehand... 1 in 10 'disappeared', not ended up 1/2 parked inside of an asteroid.
Linux will make the desktop when it 'just works', no hassle, no issues. And by just works - I mean all programs installed, not just the OS (once running... the installers seem to have gone far enough down the 'just works' route for my tastes... and they still have (most of) the fall back 'custom' selection)
Sadly, the call for 'flexibility' - which probably is its greatest strength, is also its greatest weakness. Things should "just work(TM)". In my experience, they don't... and getting better doesn't cut the mustard in todays world.
Perhaps - but on the other hand, its not like it will be easy to eavesdrop on. (almost) no divergence... you know that the only person listening is the person to who its directed.
I guess you could get _some_ info from diffraction (eg - metal powder), but at a much reduced intensity - and a resulting weaker signal.
how much power is poured out of radar systems, radio stations and tv stations? I guess NiCad batteries have come further than I thought in the last few years. and a 'running laptop' causing enough interference to do _anything_ to a plane during taxi and takeoff? If planes were that dangerous, no one would ever use them.
I thought the only 1/2 valid reason was because they didn't think the signal towers could handle the tower changes at that speed... though I'm not convinced, and am sure its nothing that couldn't be patched (or is that a bugfix?).
"interference" aside, i'm actually glad... not only mini phone towers, but some carriers plan wifi as well (I hope its not the same as gprs per meg, though). just great for those long flights.
back in Australia, for most states the speed limit is 110kph. People die of fatigue on the highways, having been on them for so long. Hell, they have cops on the Nullabor, no trees, no cars, flat plain, and cops... yes, and to the Americans, Australia is just as wide as the USA.
here in the UK, when the motorways are full, its slow anyway, and when they are empty, people race past at 90+ mph... because you can see, because you have time. I just wish that it was more 'appropriate' cars, not shopping trolleys.
then into the streets of a town, and how many people have pulled out in front of you and then thought to check? sure, you can speed, but you will have an accident - pray its at an intersection with a car, not at a crossing with a person.
then there is drunk/drug drivers...
and the comment about 'soccer mums' - yeah, they can be scary. I don't get it - is the 4x4 for the kerbs?
The law address visible (and revenue raising) aspects. cameras in school zones? yes, but why not make the camera visible and prevent speeding rather than hiding it and collecting revenue?
well, yes, I could go on for ever. I'll wrap up the rant.
because its ok to 'skirt' the law when it suits us. don't kid with me - have you never sped (not even the tiniest bit to get through an intersection on an orange safely)? if its law - have you never downloaded an episode, never commited any copyright violations? never crossed the road anywhere but on a zebra crossing if there is one within 20m (or whatever the law is), never been in a car park a few minutes too long. it its consequences - don't speed, be safe in town, and next time you have been on the highway for 2+ hours with minimal traffic and perfect visibility, just think - a few hundred rpm more will kill someones family, but blind obedience will save lives.
After all, that _is_ the international law. Which is why Australia has to receive back as waste for the yellowcake (etc) we sell.
That *is* my back yard. Sadly, that seems to be the case.
It might be bearable if governments could decide where (and I don't just mean my country).
Recently, the Victorian Government tried to set up a toxic waste dump in the middle of where all their grain comes from. After it had been bounced from a few tourism spots and small towns... I think it was finally squashed though.
The thing is, NO ONE wants it 'in their back yard'... safe or not, even if they are in the logical place (and what are the odds of any policitican ignoring politics to do the right thing)... 'not in my back yard'.
I see many posts about his books (which I _have_ read), but none about Amyloidosis.
This is a little sad, because Amyloidosis is quite a hard disease to diagnose. Not that its particularly hard with its symptoms, but because it has a low profile, including in the medical community.
A friend of a friend (did I actually write that?) had it, and it took years to be diagnosed (it was in the liver). His widow travels the world to keep in touch with the latest developments, and promotes the support groups cause.
Have some compassion, people. Its a sad thing to say, but perhaps greater understanding will come with greater exposure.
How hard is it to get around software - especially considering that the kids are often more tech savvy than their parents.
Its stupid, though... WHY should it be mandatory? Enforced cencorship... hell, if the parents really wanted it, they could find it. There is an Australian company called Webshield that does this, for one, so if it was such a big deal why are there so few ISP's that offer it?
And there are so many ways that it could be implemented, so many ways to get it wrong.
If the parents felt a need, they already have options - and if they don't... well, why isn't the computer in the living room then?
ARGH! Enough... I should be working
not an advertisment, but the company I mentioned is run by friends.

Hmm... no details on latency / throughput.
Could this be done with AR Toolkit style glyphs as well?
And, of course, distance FROM the camera is not captured in either case.
No Bananas? Hmmm...
reminds me of the Banana Crisis of 2006 (otherwise known as Cyclone Larry)

Theres more than one way to skin a... err... banana.

My personal email suffers from this - Everytime the boss walks past
oops, yes, I was.
Though I _don't_ get how the speed of sound can be so fast in such a rarified medium, given that sound is nothing more than vibration.
In space, no one can hear you scream? ... because the speed of sound in space is zero (well, undefined would probably be better)
So apart from it being a long way away, its where space (where there is no sound) is slower than sound (on earth)
?

At least you guys have a choice. Voting is compulsory in Australia, and every time there is a local election we are requited to turn out.
I've had to fill in so many non attendance forms its not funny...

I hated this subject... If only my lecturer had told me I could win US$25k, it might have been more interesting.
The hardware that powers slashdot?
I wanna know about the power that powers slashdot... are you really as green as the default colour scheme?
what interference?
