I travel frequently as well and don't use that much data (unless I'm streaming Netflix or something). That's an interesting test, especially if you are looking to be a system administrator at some point. That test touches upon all sorts of skill sets and shows at least a base competency is several real world technologies - OSes (Windows/Linux), Networking (multiple levels of OSI), hardware and virtualization. It also shows that someone can be self-reliant (no google), knows how to troubleshoot and can also read a man/help page.

I couldn't have done something like this when I was in school. Heck, most "IT Professionals" I know today probably couldn't do it either. It amazes me how people get stuck in a niche. Linux admins not knowing anything about Windows and vice-versa. Network guys that don't really understand networking (routing, protocols, etc), but can copy a switch port config like nobodies business.

Please enlighten us to all great things you did 10 years ago that are relevant today...

We were total computer newbs and couldn't figure out why the game we installed (nasty shades of purple) looked nothing like the back of the box. Not very ideal viewing times to compare against other sporting events. Put a mid-season football game on a Tuesday morning at 7:30AM and then we can talk apples to apples. The times that espn3.com decides to work, it would be interesting to see those numbers as well. I am also sure viewership will increase as the tournament continues as there should be much better matchups to watch. Perhaps, but a lot of other countries were affected as well. I don't know if a switch to metric would have any benefit in the near future, and the situation isn't bad enough that we'd want to. The scenario I'm describing is not just a weak economy, but more like a fall from our current state as a world power... In such a case we'd need to learn metric (and, possibly, a foreign language or two) in order to compete economically.

Ahh, I see where you are going. I would argue we would have much larger problems to worry about if this country sank to those levels. Dropping from a world power would (IMO) involve a civil war or a major homeland invasion. Metric system would be last on the list of our worries. Even with China emerging at the next major economic super power, I still think English will be the "language of business" going forward and cannot imagine any other language ever supplanting it.

If our government had any money today, I think changing over to the metric system would be a great economic boon. Imagine all the road signs, mile markers, books, maps, classroom materials, etc that would need to be changed. It would affect a wide variety of industries and lower our jobless rates significantly.

Exactly. That's why I am still driving my 2002 Pathfinder that gets 15-18 MPG. It's paid off. Why would I spend $20k+ to get a car that gets 30+ MPG? It's going to cost me a hell of a lot of money to save on my weekly gasoline bill. It's like women and shopping. Look how much money I saved!!! 60% off of x, y and z. But you still spent $1500!!!

Short of that, I don't know what could possibly get us to switch.
