4chan is composed of far more than
/b/. For example the discussion at http://dis.4chan.org/prog/ blows slashdot out of the water in terms of technical content, accuracy and most especially humor. -

Re:What the hell *is* Minecraft?
I bought it. I love it. I've been telling everyone who'll listen to me about it.
The reason the site contains so little information about the game is because there isn't much to tell – by and large, the game is the definition of a sandbox. For gameplay examples, you should look at some Let's Play videos; I recommend the ones done by mastatsan.
BTW, the reason it's sold so many copies is because 4chan's
/v/ hooked onto it in a major way, and it's spreading quite quickly through Reddit. My point is, although the number of copies sold sounds huge for a game still in alpha, it's somehow clicked with a huge number of people. Also, whatever said this all happened in the last week isn't quite right: while sales have been rising steadily for the last while, the game's been purchasable for over a year now. -
He's crazy enough for MS to listen though
See here where Foredecker the Senior VP of Windows Client Performance Division has to admit apk was right on HOSTS files:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1755714&cid=33349528
And iirc, Dr. Mark Russinovich has even had his work corrected by APK also in his pagedefrag program (for how to do the job right and also to remove hardcodes from that program http://dis.4chan.org/read/prog/1235936964, and more on memory mgt in memory compaction which even Linux latest kernel 2.6.35 has added features for because it works for programs like Microsoft Exchange which has issues with memory fragmentation as does firefox even).
It also appears that and apk's even active lately helping the freeware movement in the 64-bit area in more difficult type applications in defraggers it seems this year in UltraDefrag 64 http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/handbook/Credits.html as well.
APK, unlike yourself, also has this set of published programs or articles in respected written publications in print and online that he's done since 1995 inclusive of both shareware, freeware, and commercial software to his name that even did well 2 yrs. in a row at Microsoft Tech Ed speak well for he which I just clipped from a post of his that Silanea put up here in this thread discussion:
"My Name is Ozymandias: King of Kings - Look upon my works, ye mighty, & DESPAIR..."
----
Windows NT Magazine (now Windows IT Pro) April 1997 "BACK OFFICE PERFORMANCE" issue, page 61
(&, for work done for EEC Systems/SuperSpeed.com on PAID CONTRACT (writing portions of their SuperCache program increasing its performance by up to 40% via my work) albeit, for their SuperDisk & HOW TO APPLY IT, took them to a finalist position @ MS Tech Ed, two years in a row 2000-2002, in its HARDEST CATEGORY: SQLServer Performance Enhancement).
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, 1997, "Top Freeware & Shareware of the Year" issue page 210, #1/first entry in fact (my work is there)
PC-WELT FEB 1998 - page 84, again, my work is featured there
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, WINTER 1998 - page 92, insert section, MUST HAVE WARES, my work is again, there
PC-WELT FEB 1999 - page 83, again, my work is featured there
CHIP Magazine 7/99 - page 100, my work is there
GERMAN PC BOOK, Data Becker publisher "PC Aufrusten und Repairen" 2000, where my work is contained in it
HOT SHAREWARE Numero 46 issue, pg. 54 (PC ware mag from Spain), 2001 my work is there, first one featured, yet again!
Also, a British PC Mag in 2002 for many utilities I wrote, saw it @ BORDERS BOOKS but didn't buy it... by that point, I had moved onto other areas in this field besides coding only...
Lastly, being paid for an article that made me money over @ PCPitstop in 2008 for writing up a guide that has people showing NO VIRUSES/SPYWARES & other screwups, via following its point, such as THRONKA sees here -> http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=ee926d913b81bf6d63c3c7372fd2a24c&t=28430&page=3

What do I have to say about that much above? I can't say it any better, than this was stated already (from the greatest book of all time, the "tech manual for life" imo):
"But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me." - Corinthians Chapter 10, Verse 10
(And, because I got LUCKY to have been exposed to some really GREAT classmates, professors, & colleagues on the job over time as well)

Impossible captcha's
Talking about 4chan, there's currently an hilarious thread about impossible captcha's: http://boards.4chan.org/r9k/res/10509296 (note, it is of course 4chan, be careful there, although this is r9k, not the worst of boards.. )

NSFW links, but not as bad as people tend to make out.
http://boards.4chan.org/b/ The random board. A bunch of kids messing around basically.
http://boards.4chan.org/s/ A good source of porn.
Both those boards get filled with spam, and some of the spam is advertising for child porn download services. In fact a lot of the spam is exactly that. The boards are moderated (sometimes) but the torrent of spam often gets ahead of the volunteer moderators. The landing page for 4chan and the other chans (7, 420, etc) advertise the boards they host. They target pop and counter-culture audiences. Its all very ad-hoc. Run on php scripts. There is no archiving or tracking of users. The low tech nature of the forums is one of the attractions for some people.

1st step
First things first. I propose that the U.S. government tap the creative forces of the 4chan, worth1000 and Fark Photoshop communities for a cost-effective and highly creative solution to replace the godawful uninspiring motivational posters being distributed by the United States Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive
:
Check 'em out here: http://www.ncix.gov/publications/posters/index.html
"ONCIX does not provide printed copies of our posters. These materials are NOT copyrighted, and you are welcome to download, print, and disseminate our posters freely to promote greater counterintelligence awareness." -
Re:GREAT IDEA!
And thats just an idea off the top of my head. I think if you put more thought into it, you could find some great ways to out-grief the trolls.
Check out moot is doing to

The most annoying sound in the world.

4Chan will get right on that.
That's a job for 4chan.
Other comments have missed the point. Amazon is transmitting and storing information about what interests readers enough to highlight. That can be very personal. It doesn't matter that the information that Amazon displays is "aggregated".
For example, if someone highlights the name of a terrorist, that could be a cause for police interest in that person. The information about what the person highlighted is available to police investigation, or to any surveillance department of the government, of which there are many in the United States.
The information about what someone highlighted is also available to anyone who has access to the database. That may be a large number of Amazon employees, and even a large number of hackers, in the case of exploitation of a vulnerability.
My understanding is that the copyright to any modification someone makes to his or her copy of a book belongs to that person, even if it is just highlighting. He or she may not be able to publish that modification without permission from the copyright owner of the book, but the modification does belong to the person who made the modification. Any sneaky, after the fact change to Amazon's terms of use that gives Amazon rights to another person's creation is moral fraud, even if it is not legally actionable fraud.
One solution is to get books at the library. -
Depends on what you want
There's Tumblr, Jaiku, LiveJournal, 4chan...
Or alternatively, you could do your own research.

Re:Impossible!
Except "Anonymous" is the bastard hybrid of a punch of bored 14 year old script kiddies
Wrong, because this would be a blatant violation of 4chan rules:
If you are under the age of 18, or it is illegal for you to view the materials contained on this website, discontinue browsing immediately.
So it is obvious that 14 year olds (along with people from Australia and Iran) are not allowed to access 4chan because of the rules.

...(who insisted he or she is not a spokesperson for the group)...
...because the “group” does not have a spokesperson. Remember the “loose-knit” thing? The site where some members of Anonymous are said to hang out, 4chan...
Yeah, let me know when you see Anonymous on there. They're totally a bunch of black shadowy figures hanging out in
/b/. Also, last time I checked, this was 4chan rule #4:The posting of personal information or calls to invasion is prohibited.
4chan has a reputation for being a launchpad for this sort of thing, but it's not, at least, not any more. Go blame IRC, go blame any of the dozen clone boards, but it's not 4chan now.

Re:I feel split in this matter
4chan is the radio active waste dump of the internet and for the most part all of their shenanigans tend to stay at 4chan, when you close 4chan it spreads.
I don't really see how you can call all these animals of nature a 'waste dump'
http://boards.4chan.org/an/Or even their technology board, which posts more new technology in a day than slashdot has in the past 12 months over on http://boards.4chan.org/g/
This would be similar to me stating as fact that you are a pedophile because that's all that hangs out on idle.slashdot.org and clearly you are here (right here, on tech.slashdot.org, but you know, the exact same thing)

I bet the HURD team is turning in their graves.
Everything but HURD is being developed. Free Software Foundation should get it's priorities correctly in order. I wouldn't doubt if the gnashing of teeth sounds like this ( http://www.pornhost.com/3717444522/ ) as the team get's pounded down to the floor for lack of priorities.
If Linus Torvalds would put priorities to Linux, so why not HURD? As if the *BSD's will ever be a bastion for free and open source software, it is a bad choice to devote any resource to those platforms. Priorities NOW! Stop screwing the original master ( http://cgi.4chan.org/gif/src/1254939124218.gif ) Debian

Block lifted; moot provides details.
moot has posted the details on status.4chan.org.
Basically he confirms all the speculation that AT&T blocked 4chan because of ACK bouncebacks from a DDOS. Real
/b/tards probably already had off-network proxies at the ready to deal with it.Also, being on AT&T and unable to access 4chan doesn't necessarily mean that it's been blocked. 4chan is up and down all the time, because they're under constant DDOS attacks, at pretty much all times, from various sources. It seems that DDOSing 4chan is a basic holding pattern for botnets that aren't otherwise occupied.
Here's what happened:
For the past three weeks, 4chan has been under a constant DDoS attack. We were able to filter this specific type of attack in a fashion that was more or less transparent to the end user.
Unfortunately, as an unintended consequence of the method used, some Internet users received errant traffic from one of our network switches. A handful happened to be AT&T customers.
In response, AT&T filtered all traffic to and from our img.4chan.org IPs (which serve
/b/ & /r9k/) for their entire network, instead of only the affected customers. AT&T did not contact us prior to implementing the block. Here is their statement regarding the matter. In the end, this wasn't a sinister act of censorship, but rather a bit of a mistake and a poorly executed, disproportionate response on AT&T's part. Whoever pulled the trigger on blackholing the site probably didn't anticipate [nor intend] the consequences of doing so.
We're glad to see this short-lived debacle has prompted renewed interest and debate over net neutrality and internet censorshipâ"two very important issues that don't get nearly enough attentionâ"so perhaps this was all just a blessing in disguise.
Aside from that, I'll also add that there is some big news due later this week. Keep an eye on the News page, Twitter, and global message for updates.
As always, I can be reached at moot@4chan.org.

Not blocking 4chan.org for all users
The issue was reported on Reddit.com 16 hours ago. At no time, apparently, was access to img.4chan.org slow. Also, at present the IP address 207.126.64.181 connects directly to 4chan.org, as it should.
So, AT&T, is not blocking img.4chan.org, the company is only blocking some of its users. Check 4chan status. Quote: "UPDATE: Some coverage on TechCrunch, Digg, reddit, and Google News. Also, note that AT&T has yet to contact us." -
Re:4chan Down
According to http://status.4chan.org/
"Cogent Communications has joined the club-they're now blocking all of 4chan. I can't even access the site at this point. We're working on it..."
So the site isn't down, in the sense that the servers are still running, and its not a DDOS attack but simply a denial of service by the ISPs/Backbones needed to access it. Net Neutrality anyone?... -
Re:Before we act too hastily..
I don't know how credible this is http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/2523/1248672053880.png But the IP specified there is the same for http://img.4chan.org/

The Reality
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this just further proof of the systemic opinion that most Americans have that "it doesn't matter what you believe, only what lies you are willing to subscribe to"? From just casually spending the last 25 years of my life trying to impartially observe why it is that the vast majority of people in America are willing to tolerate a government that abuses it's authority and having heard over and over and over again replies to the effect of "eh - whatcanya' do?", the only conclusion I can draw is that people in America are willing to tolerate outrageous, often unlawful behavior on the part of their so-called "leaders" so long as they continue to enjoy the benefits and comforts those leaders seem to be providing them - even to the point of abdicating their so-called "constitutional rights".
If you are a student of history, you might have at some time noticed a disquieting trend from the earliest civilizations to what we have today: technological advances don't create a more "civilized" society. In fact, it empowers those who have the means to use it to cause people to become less civil towards each other. Should you doubt this you could take a little tour through the sewer that is 4chan. Does anyone with even an iota of civil behavior in them believe for an instant that 4chan is a reflection of the proper use of one's first amendment right of freedom of speech? If you do I would submit that you, in fact, are part of the problem and if that is what you are, your opinions and views are made moot by association and are therefore not part of any solution. The unrealistic paradigm that simply because you CAN say (or do), a thing you SHOULD is the hallmark of uncivilized thinking. ("Do As Thou Wilt" is not "the law", it is the anti-thesis of law - and civil behavior - sorry to disillusion those of you out there with a Crowley Hardon and completely misunderstand this).
Fact of the matter is: so long as you are willing to tolerate a government that will listen, record, observe, make note of, and in far too many instances eliminate those who would oppose it, you're part of the problem and you have no right to bitch, no ground to stand on and object, no reason to do so in the first place and should go back to masturbating with your shiny little WIRETAPPED iPhone because THAT, My Fellow American, is the lie that you're willing to subscribe to.
Kudos and Good Luck to Mr. Klein and the EFF for stepping up to the plate. -
Good luck with that!
Maybe google could use the money from bad videos to give small rebates to people with good videos.
Wait... You are suggesting monetary moderation based on taste and tastefulness? On D interwebz?
You are one of those "green people" parent poster speaks of, aren't you?
This site should prove insightful for your further understanding of the nature of the internet. -
