Consciousness
I believe a better question is does collective consciousness somehow affect the outcome of certain events, and could some events be tied together?
Remember September 11th 2002, the New York Lottery came out 9-1-1? That was very coincidental.

BTW, I can taste the difference in Coke and Pepsi. I prefer Pepsi, but I really don't care. My wife, however, is very sensitive to the difference. When she was pregnant even the smell of Pepsi would make her nauseated, but Coke was fine.
However, I think most people don't know the difference. When Coke came out with New Coke many people complained bitterly. The leading crusader for the switch back to "Old Coke" was Gay Mullins. However, when given a taste test with Coke, New Coke and Pepsi, he chose PEPSI! When given a second chance, he said he could not tell which he liked best. In his case, it apparently was "all in his mind." The only reference I could find quickly on this is this usenet post.

600,000 Civilians Killed in Iraq Under SaddamThe story forgot to mention the other side. According to the Documental Centre for Human Rights in Iraq, 600,000 civilians were executed during Sadaam Hussein's regime.
From The Age (Google cache to skip registration): We have records of 600,000 executions and we estimate that 180,000 died in the uprising including the Marsh Arabs. The bombing of Halabja left 5000 dead," Mr al-Huoseyni said.
Like the posting said, make sure you vote--just like the people in Iraq finally had a chance to.

Why don't they look at the google cache to see the logins of some of the people that used the site. Though they may have already done that to get the people they busted already.
Interesting topics on their board. They appear to be quite blatent about their activities. -
Re:Voice QualityTechnically, it appears that Skype only uses a third party to facilitate a direct connection between the two NATed hosts. I've heard this described as NAT Punching and I'm still a bit fuzzy on how it works.
According to this article, Skype licensed a proprietary codec from Global IP Sound.
As for spyware, a little research into the history of the Kazaa client would reveal that the people who introduced the spyware did so after they bought the technology from the developers. The Skype people are the original developers and had nothing to do with the spyware included in the install. Remember for a time you could download the Morpheus client and participate on the same P2P network as Kazaa without spyware. It wasn't until Morpheus and Kazaa had a falling out and Morpheus no longer worked on the Kazaa network that you saw the spyware free KazaaLite clients coming out.

Re:An even more trivial penaltyYes, you've been bad, now here's your fine.
Kind of like when GM, Firestone and Standard Oil were found guilty of criminal conspiracy when they systematically dismantled the electric public transportation with bus lines. "The court imposed a sanction of $5,000 on GM. In addition, the jury convicted H.C. Grossman, who was then treasurer of General Motors. Grossman had played a key role in the motorization campaigns and had served as a director of PCL when that company undertook the dismantlement of the $100 million Pacific Electric system. The court fined Grossman the magnanimous sum of $1.211."

Similar devices:
Was just checking these out yesterday:
Go Video
KISS (runs Linux)
Supposedly Gateway has one too, but perhaps they discontinued it. Could only find this Google cache link.
D-Link
And I'm sure I've missed quite a few. All have slightly different configurations; my goal was to find a box that would play media from the network.
Furthermore, I want the device to play DVD images (I rip ISO images using DVDDecrypter so I don't loose all the extra DVD stuff). I am not sure any of them actually support that. I would even be happy with a device that can play the VOBs directly, I can 'mount' the ISO on the server... -

Re:Record deficits, and we still want tax cuts?
It's your children and economy that have to pay the piper. That's why the talk of "tax cuts" is so aggravating. They aren't "tax cuts", they are "tax debts and burdens" on our future generations.
Notably, future generations aren't voters in the here and now when trade-offs are being decided about future taxes supporting current benefits.
From 7 years ago, this testimony from a young person about the consequences of using an overly generous CPI to boost, for example, social security entitlement payments, seems prescient.
Entitlement payments and debt interest already eat the majority of the federal budget - so-called discretionary spending - on programs that could hardly be deemed optional - is going to come under heavy scrutiny.
As someone who is going into retirement sooner than most of the population, I think it is unconsciounable that aged Americans and politicians have taken advantage of the pay-as-you-go Social Security system to milk much more from the system than they've put in.
I know it will decrease my benefits, but the system has to be changed to preserve what society actually needs as a bare minimum essential safety net instead of a pension.
Compare the percentage of people living under the poverty threshhold of those over age 65 to those under the age of 18 and you can see what kinds of decisions we're making.
Don't get me wrong - the elderly ought not to suffer in abject poverty. But they ought to exercise the responsiblity and wisdom in their voting not to financially oppress their progeny.

Re: Bio-Diesel not less emissions.
Hmm. So something you saw, but can't provide any information about. Lets stop the world.
While at the same time, Myself and many people are actually USING Biodiesel, and I can show you my emissions test results.... I could probably record you video of my car's tailpipe with Dino compared to Bio. But why bother?
Do you work for Exxon or something?
Here is a summary of a study(pdf) (google html) that the EPA did, which shows that Bio does in fact produce less emissions that regular diesel. Here is another summary of the study. -

It was Serbia who sent the Troops....
http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:oyqydctb8woJ:o
n ion.com/onion3641/serbia_deploys_forces.html+&hl=e n SERBAI DEPLOYS PEACEKEEPING FORCES TO THE US BELGRADESerbian president Vojislav Kostunica deployed more than 30,000 peacekeeping troops to the U.S. Monday, pledging full support to the troubled North American nation as it struggles to establish democracy. Above: Serbian peacekeeping troops patrol Washington, D.C. "We must do all we can to support free elections in America and allow democracy to gain a foothold there," Kostunica said. "The U.S. is a major player in the Western Hemisphere and its continued stability is vital to Serbian interests in that region." Kostunica urged Al Gore, the U.S. opposition-party leader who is refusing to recognize the nation's Nov. 7 election results, to "let the democratic process take its course." Special Report "Mr. Gore needs to acknowledge the will of the people and concede that he has lost this election," Kostunica said. "Until America's political figures learn to respect the institutions that have been put in place, the nation will never be a true democracy." Serbian forces have been stationed throughout the U.S., with an emphasis on certain trouble zones. Among them are Oregon, Florida, and eastern Tennessee, where Gore set up headquarters in Bush territory. An additional 10,000 troops are expected to arrive in the capital city of Washington, D.C. by Friday. Though Kostunica has pledged to work with U.S. leaders, he did not rule out the possibility of economic sanctions if the crisis is not resolved soon. "For democracy to take root and flourish, it must be planted in the rich soil of liberty. And the cornerstone of liberty is elections free of tampering or corruption," Kostunica said. "Should America prove itself incapable of learning this lesson on its own, the international community may be forced to take stronger measures." -
Twenty Hydrogen Myths
Please read Twenty hydrogen myths (pdf). (HTML version by Google). This guy KNOWS what he's talking about.
I was kinda shocked when I read that many people who died at the hindemburg incident did so because they JUMPED OFF the thing before it could land.
And when i read about the hydrogen exploding with a "pop" instead of a "boom" in laboratory, i remembered my chemistry lessons. We DID put a flame in a test tube full of hydrogen. It popped really nice :)

Re:What's so "cool" about FireFox?
Actually, given the increasing number of broadband users in the USA, the difference in download times for FireFox and Mozilla 1.7.3 is no longer significant.
The difference between 4.5 MB and 11MB is dramatic for the 60 million (49%) US internet users who still don't have broadband.
I'm not sure how a figure like "half" isn't significant. Half of the US still isn't on broadband and for them, Firefox downloading much easier than Mozilla. Firefox is about the size of an MP3. People can relate to downloading something that size.
But Mozilla has a few things that FireFox lacks right now: 1) better page-rendering accuracy and 2) a very good mail and newsgroup reader.
Mozilla and Firefox share the same Gecko rendering engine so I'm not sure where you get the "better page-rendering accuracy" from. Firefox has a powerful companion e-mail application called Thunderbird for anyone who needs a great (not "good") email and newsgroup reader. Thunderbird is to Mozilla email what Firefox is to Mozilla browser.

Sounds Pretty Bitter
Schwartz's blog may not be representative of the general corporate attitude at Sun, but he comes across as bitter and even hostile. Perhaps he is just a passionate believer in his company's work, but his whiney tone smacks of unprofessionalism. I'm not particularly well versed on the continuing saga that is Sun, but should not product performance be speaking for itself? In any case, if they have achieved something noteworthy with this "32-way" chip, I hope they figure out a way to make it useful. This MPR Paper on the processor may be of interest to some.

Universal? -- Noin the small print you find something to the effect of "for this product to function as described, you must meet the following requirements....".
Like this, I think:
Operating System Mapper. Dynamite supports operating system mapping between any two Unix/Linux-like operating systems, as well as mapping between mainframe and any Unix/Linux-like operating systems.
So nothing about Windows, and Mac only as OSX, I think. No mention in the Wired article of it being limited to *ix-like OSs. Which idiot calls this "universal"? -

Re:I *LIKE* nasty, dirty flaming campaigns
You'd think Slashdot would be all over a candidate who can actually write code, but I suppose it's the two party system that's so entrenched that it's even prevelent here.
Well, Could It be Because don't have a heart?
The thing I don't understand about the Libertarian Party is that they want to give a dollar for dollar "Tax" credit for people giving to private charities, but yet they want to eliminate ALL taxes. Also in one article they are not for "Survival of the Fittest" but "Survival of the Kindest, then they turn around and Say that if you're not of the fittest, then in their eyes, you're worthless.
Also, I think it's because They Support Nambla, a very sick orginization. Heck I would vote for Bush before I would vote Libertarian. -
