Re:I thought this was the law already...
The FCC doesn't regulate volume. But I think you're basically on the right track. The WSJ actually does a decent job of explaining the situation in layman's terms.

Xerox Mainframe/DECWriter/Acoustic CouplerAh, you kids with your CRT's and local storage. You don't know how good you had it.
When _I_ was a kid in high school, we had to dial the phone to some university's mainframe, wait for the screech, and put the handset in the cradel of the acoustic modem (I think it was 300 baud).
Then, we sat down at a DECWriter terminal, which had a keyboard, and a box of fan-fold paper underneath it.
Oh, and the games were WONDERFUL:YOU ARE AT THE TEE OF A 120 YAR PAR THREE. TREES TO THE LEFT. ENTER CLUB AND SWING
AND WE LIKED IT. -
Re:HUMBUG
The Nano doesn't have a radio, but it does have a stopwatch. It's mentioned somewhere in the webcast.

Apple and Intel Sitting on a Tree...
Apple and Intel Sitting on a Tree...

Forget Tom Cruz and his new and barely legal girlfriend. Or Brad Pitt and Lara Croft. The hottest couple of this summer is Apple and Intel. After years of bad-mouthing the Santa Clara-based Nelson of the chip sector, Jobs announced last week that Apple and Intel had been secretly dating for 5 years and now are comfortable enough about their relationship to announce to the world their commitment to each other. When asked about the future of the Cupertino-based computer company, Jobs said,"People want better user experience. So, with the hardware giant working on the [air quotes] exciting stuff, I would like to focus Apple's resources to the really really important stuff."
"The logo is our first priority. People love our Apple logo but I've got some neat ideas to take this to a new level that'll really make people go, 'Wow! Now that is a symbol that rappers would be proud to wear.' Watch out Mercedes. And come on, do you really want to be seen wearing a Dell logo? It's like you're advertising to the entire world that you eat at McDonalds and shop at Walmart." He then took a sip of bottled water, adjusted his Freudian spectacles, and continued,"Next on our list is the screensaver. Apple is at the top of the screensaver technology with the fades and zooms so why improve, you ask?" Before I could respond, he answered his own question with another question,"Why not? It's only a matter of time before the Windows folks and Linux folks copy me but by then, I'll have the next screensaver technology ready and BAM! I am on top again. Seriously, this is really important stuff to people. When you walk away from your workstation and your screensaver starts, you want your cubicle neighbors to turn green with envy and our R&D shows that Apple screensavers are excellent ways to increase social ranking in any corporation. Lastly, our commercials are going to so rock you. We are neck to neck with Sony and Budweiser right now and our future commercials will alter the way you view the universe." Jobs then leaned back and pushed a button on a remote control whereupon a giant white screen descended from the ceiling and in parallel, a podium rose from the floor. He insisted that this one-on-one interview continue with him standing at the podium.

Re:So here it is
I don't know about transcripts, but there's a video stream of the keynote here.

Webcast is Available
Actually, Apple reneged and decided to make the presentation available, just not live.
Here is where you can watch it. QuickTime and streaming access to the Internet required. -
Stream is up!http://stream.apple.akadns.net/
(but the audio had some glitches at ~50minutes.. maybe they'll repost a fixed
.mov) -
Re:To big an audience?
Apple was one of the early investors in Akamai and they've been using their streaming services for many years...
Their event streaming entry point is even http://stream.apple.akadns.net/ (although that's still pointing to the Music Event from a few months back). -
Re:Is there a word...
Or Apple's spotlight which, for example, *parses words in PDFs*. Steve demoed this at the WWDC. While looking for things re: Yosemite or Tahoe or whatever, it found a PDF map of CA or NV with the being-searched-for region in it.

Re:Mono is cool.
You must have not seen the demo at the keynote. While it may be true that it also happens to sit architecturally underneath video services, it is a very general-purpose framework and certainly could be used to make something like GIMP or Photoshop. That is, in fact, the first thing that they demonstrated before they moved on to how it is used in the video services. Steve Jobs specifically mentioned in the keynote that he would like to see Adobe use this new framework in Photoshop, which struck many as a veiled threat that if they do not then two guys in a garage somewhere will eat their lunch.

Re:Just a random thought
Redefined?
How can an OS that's playing catchup to Apple's Panther redefine the industry?
It's also not going to be delivered until a year, or maybe more, after Tiger. Longhorn's Avalon sounds like the Macs Quartz Extreme display engine (which has been out for almost a year now) minus the new Core Image and Core Video extensions that are coming in Tiger. If you want to see what this stuff looks like check out Steve Jobs' keynote from WWDC and fast forward to about 1hr 7mins in to hear something about it, or 1hr 9mins to see a demo.
Given what Apple are doing Microsoft has little choice but to try to catch up, otherwise they're going to look really tired. For those in the know the imaging system in XP really is very tired compared to Mac OS X 10.3, but the differences aren't really dramatic enough for Apple to shout about. Early next year though when 10.4 arrives with Core Image and Core Video I think we can expect them to be shouting very loudly.
As for being sick of hearing about software that won't be in use for another 3-5 years, maybe you should consider switching. -
Re:Nice
I've seen that before in similar conversations, it doesn't say DDL or DVI Dual Link anywhere on it. Once it mentions Dual Link DVI. I think it's an apple marketing thing, not an official DVI thing.
If you watch the WWDC Keynote at one point there's a slide up that just says DDL in giant letters and steve says "we've got DUAL dual link." That's the most I've seen to go off of. -

strange moderation- Links to quicktime
I link the keynote which is interesting.. Get modded to "flamebait"????. Maybe someone couldn't get a good connection?
Anyway here are the working links again..
Quicktime WWDC
or a more direct link
Anyway I finish watching. Interesting stuff. The system wide search is interesting. Like the google search service for your hard drive.
The the real time image/video effects. I do a lot of photoshop and the effects are really fast and leverage the video card GPU. The libraries will autodetect the card and use the card if applicable. 100+ effect libraries with the os to build into application.
They're working hard on the OS and it shows. -
It's here!

Re:Keynote Available Online Anywhere?
yes, it's here.. a live stream though, so you can't "scrub" through it..

Take a look for yourself!
I am amazed by the Apple keynotes that Steve Jobs give (and Apple streams from their site) twice a year.
There are two things that amaze me: First, that Apple can consistently release cool things that can keep its user base excited. Second, that Jobs can actually make an interesting two hour show out of it.
For those of you who have never seen the magic of a Steve Jobs Keynote, go to the Apple site under the Quicktime section and view the keynote. It's two hours long, but I'm wiling that if you don't find it at least "really cool" to watch, you'll agree it's better than the average dreck we sit down and watch on the telley each night. This keynote is a good example because it takes a large number of moderate announcements (unlike the unveiling of the iMac, the G5, the major OS upgrades, etc.) but STILL makes you excited enough to want to go out and play with these things.
It also gives me an appreciation of how many market segments Apple is entrenching itself in. You can really see the "digital hub" strategy at work, as well as the fact that income revenue is coming from hardware (iPods) music downloads (iTunes) Internet subscription services (dot-Mac) and others. Go check out the keynote for yourself. I think it'll give you a much different perspective in what and where Apple is in this decade.
And thank goodness SOMEONE is working to keep the computer field new and exciting!

Quicktime Keynote Slashdotted
I've been trying the link to the keynote stream at apple's site for the last 15 minutes with the same error 10060 every time. Come on Apple! Can't you show your keynote to everyone as you promised?

More Clues About Tomorrow's New Releases
Slightly off topic, but I'm sure that Apple's got more to release tomorrow than just this iMac. Specifically, you can see a (blurry) picture of something that Jobs is going to show of, at http://stream.apple.akadns.net/
I can't tell what it is. It might just be another iPod, but I'll speculate that it's another "Digital Lifestyle" device, perhaps a demo unit of something like Danger sells. I believe that Apple's buying Danger, so this is possible.
