Re:That's why having resources in files is helpfulJava has Resource Bundles for different locales. The PropertyResourceBundle is especially useful for translations because it is the one that handles Strings. The nice thing though, is that you can also control behaviours by overriding the correct resource bundle. (Useful for currency display, etc). If you want to internationalize a Java program, check out the i18n Java Tutorial.
After making a few of my open source projects internationalized, I ran into a problem. The text files that need to be translated are in the Western character set (ISO-8859-1). This is a problem because characters outside this set all need to be escaped. People volunteering to translate didn't have the time or skill to figure out how to do that. I wrote a Java translation editor called Attesoro to make the process easier.
For open source projects I ran into some people that do their translations using Babelfish. The automatic translations are generally horrible, but they say that this almost always encourages somebody that knows the language to volunteer to do the job better.

Simple To Do.
What's involved in translating programs? Is there a process that can be followed to make the inevitable easier? Babel Fish [altavista.com] Did you know masturbate, according to Babel Fish, is the same in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish? I wonder if the porn industry had their hands in this. Pardon the pun.

Cadeau? Gift. Buon Natale...? Good NATO to you?
So I couldn't this one out. And googling didn't help much either.
The babelfish tells me that cadeau means gift in french. But it couldn't translate "Buon Natale a tutti voi Edo" into English. Translating from Italian, and the fish tells me it means: "Good NATO them to all you Edo", which evidently is a suggestion that we bring the Japanese into NATO. Which is interesting, as just yesterday I heard a report that with the North Korean situation and everything, the Japanese are once again considering their needs for their own defense.
But what does that have to do with Ogg? -

Re:The fundamental problem has not been exposed.
Troll, this is not the first time I've had to teach someone *how* to argue, but unless you are retarded or careless I think it is the first time you were taught how to argue. BTW: What part of any person's education would be most relevant here? Hrm?
All flames aside --I know: it IS fun-- though: The fact that I have to ask "What in the hell are you talking about?", whereas you did not, proves that my argument is more effective than yours. Please read carefully: I need help understanding what you mean.
Now, I *think* you are suggesting that there is a proof that my argument is false based on French history, and then you suggest I am uneducated. I would like to know which idea of mine won't work, and a reference to the history that you allude to. I would also like to know what you mean by "uneducated" and "intelligent" so that I can satisfy the (thus poorly worded) criteria of your appreciation.
BTW: I have a BS in Political Theory and Comparative Politics, minored in Philosophy, so while I may not be able to meet *YOUR* expectations, you are a fool for expecting MORE education in these matters from people you do not know. You are the father of your own discontent! I can help you achieve more realistic expectations though, so revenons a nos moutons! (That's a french expression which means "let's get back to the business at hand." You can get the rest from Babelfish)

Chunked transfer method? Hello?
Looks like Altavista has a problem understanding the chunked HTTP transfer-encoding method. I went to look at my own results, and scattered throughout the description of my page are 3-digit hexadecimal numbers.
In a page downloaded via "chunked" transfer-encoding, the response body is broken down into small chunks, each chunk being prefixed by their length, represented as a three-digit hexadecimal number. The three chunk-lengths AV is showing as text are c45, 138, and fe4. Telnetting to my site by hand confirmed that these are the first three chunk sizes Apache is using. -

Why I switched to google
Quite honestly... I don't know why everyone complains about AltaVista's appearance for their web portal thing. Honestly, I never was too impressed with it myself though. So what I did was bookmark their text only search page. It uses even less bandwith than google, since there's not even a single graphic on the page... it's 100% text.
But there were several reasons I switched to google over time. I'd say that cached webpages were probably the biggest reason. It's annoying to find most webpages either 404'd or changed since they were spidered by the search engine. At least with google, (at the time) you could see what it looked like at the time it was searched. So you know that even if it wasn't what you were looking for, it would at least show you a cached version of the page that would have your search terms SOMEWHERE in it.
There were also other things too. Being able to search for images, more relavent searches, etc... things like that pulled me away from AltaVista. I visited AV once recently, and I noticed that they are trying to be more google-like. And with this... I'll be willing to try them out again, though I'd be surprised if they'd pull me away from google at all. But even when I switched to google, they've still always been my backup searcb engine, for when I want to see if they'll pull in slightly different results than google. But we'll see how that goes. I'd like to see them do better, I've always been fond of AltaVista. -
Blind users can't add pages
Besides, you can't really put your own stuff there
Especially if you don't have much vision. The Add URL form requires the user to 1. read a bitmapped image compressed using proprietary UNISYS(tm) technology, 2. enter all the letters from that image into a text box, and THEN 3. enter URLs. This supposedly keeps out bots that spam the form, but it also keeps out blind users and other users behind textual user agents such as w3m or Links because they cannot complete step 1.

Hello Blockbuster Music repMe:I collect Alice In Chains' music. Have any in stock? Clerck:ja. Me:Ok. One last question... Alice In Chains' music isn't made anymore 'cause the band roached-out on everyone. Because it was made before Copy Protection laws existed, does that still mean all the Albums I buy are not copy-protected? I want to know this so I can buy all their Albums at inflated prices, dump my favorites on my computer, and burn a MIX of my faves so I can listen to them as I travel to and from my job in my Hearse.

Re:*My* personal Transmeta anecdote.I've got a VAIO U1 (babel-fish'ed), running a TM5800, 867MHz and, I must say, it is awesome! As other people have pointed out, the Crusoe chip behaves well for a lot but not all applications and gaming might be one of the things it is not good at. Personally, I couldn't care less. What I'm using it for (LaTeX'ing, DivX'ing, presentations, e-mail, etc. while on the road), it does very well, indeed. In fact, I would say it performs at 2/3-3/4 the speed of my PIII-M 1.2GHz (tualatin) desktop replacement (which definitely can hold it's own). The U1 even runs my USB-connected MPEG2 encoder without a glitch.
The main issue I found is running XP with all its spurious services that seemingly screw up the code-morphing cache. Fortunately, XP can easily be desugar'ed (which you presumably want to do anyway) and the result, as I said, is just plain awesome.
Cheers

Re:Sorry boysThe kind of publishing that needs formatting, fonts, and color is mainly about deception. With rare exceptions, text is the truth, and the window-dressing tries to hide it. From Madison Avenue advertising shills to corporate Annual Report polishers to the legions of "PowerPoint(tm) Engineers" infesting government contracting, its all about getting your words to be judged by something other than what they say.
...In a more ideal future, all presentation issues will be decided on the client side. You send me the data, and I've configured my software to present it the way I prefer. It won't happen for a while yet, but I can dream. And the continued use of PDF blocks this dream.
I think you have a good point, but there are other reasons to use fonts and colors besides besides deception - there is the simple matter of self-expression. Your argument taken to its logical conclusion will apply equally to HTML as well - but there are legions of people who hand-craft web pages with a carefully chosen look and feel. The same thing is true with companies, for example Google's beautifully spare page compared to some others. This subconscious communication can be very powerful. I sympathize about the PowerPoint engineers, but its still really the fault of the people who are listening and simply are unwilling to seriously analyze words despite a glitzy window dressing. Despite the fact it has the most attractive front page, I would not use Google if I didn't think it was the best search engine.

Translation wanted
For about 3 or 4 months around when Velious came out, I had a group of five friends who I would go to the fungi camp in lower guk (at 4am, it was almost always uncamped) once or twice a week. We stayed 'til we all had a fungi tunic (they are lore) or school started. So we each made ~60k-90k plat a week, from 3-4 hours of playing, which is alot easier than this 60,000pp in a week with constant playing.
Could somebody please translate the text above into some commonly spoken language. I have tried babelfish but it did not work. The 'Fungi Tunic' part is especially confusing - and frankly the explanation that they are 'lore' did not help me much.

SoundtrackIf a live-action remake is to come anywhere close to touching the greatness of the original, they would need to have the Geinoh Yamashirogumi (English) create the soundtrack for it as well.
As far as I'm concerned, the Akira soundtrack is among the finest scores ever created for a film. It's quite perfect as the background discourse for the overall feel of the production.

I have a suspicion that news.au.com is getting one slipped to them. The closest Google result I could get with "NTT NoCoMo skin" is this article about a cell phone that conducts sound through bone and cartilage, enabling you to listen to the call by sticking your finger in your ear.
Maybe you could try actually reading the article? It clearly states the source of the news, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, and in fact the article is right at the top of the "companies" section (link, or Fish translation).

Zaurus looks tasty, but could be betterThe new Zaurus looks sweet, but I can't help but to wonder why Sharp didn't utilize the extra space on the screen-half of the folding design. They could've used an 800x480 screen. Or if that was unrealistic due to cost/hardware/battery life/whatever, then they could've at least placed hardware buttons in the space next to the VGA screen (which I can't imagine would be difficult.
I'd rather have the extra screen resolution, but the photos here suggest that the screen-half swivels around, allowing the device to be used in tablet mode (much like the Sony NR and upcoming NX series). Look closely at 06.jpg and you can see the pivot point and that the screen-half is beveled on both sides. So hardware buttons next to the screen would be quite useful...
BTW, these other images also indicate it can swivel: 01.jpg , 02.jpg , 05.jpg.
