Re:It wasn't the cannons man!
Takes the Aztec's for example.
Can't, the Spaniards already took it.
Oh, that's not what you meant? Then why did you say it?
The Aztec's were not very popular amongst their neighbors
You're probably right, if their stuff was valuable their neighbors would have taken it instead of the Spaniards. The Astecs were probably illiterates who didn't know how, why, or when to use an apostrophe. No wonder they were conquered. -
Bad day, Zonk?
Novells tiny seven page objection
There's more than one Novell? =)
IINM there should be an apostrophe there, shouldn't there? Or are you joining the movement to ban the apostrophe?
Less pedantic and more on topic, who is "York"? I thought that this too was a typo and that it meant the state of New York, so I actually clicked the link and discovered that TFA did, indeed say "York". Is that the air conditioner manufacturer, the city in England, or what?
No, I didn't RTFA (eye muss knot bee knew hear). I just searched for "York". Now to rtfa... -

The expat's what? And which expat are you referring to?
Or do you simply not know when and wnen not to use an apostrophe? Go see Bob, he'll fix you up.

Do DRM right. Do something that is information theory impossible, but do it right. Yes. I'll just get my magic pixie dust now.
I'm with you there! Was that the guy who keeps submitting the "2008 will be the year of [X}" stories to slashdot? Or is he the one who doesn't know "there" from "they're" or how to use an apostrophe? What's his problem?
How can someone who visits a site with a masthead that reads "news for nerds" not understand that DRM is an impossible dream cooked up by the technologically ignorant and implimented by con artists and thieves who know damned will that their "unbreakable lock" cannot possibly withstand the attack of hundreds of thousands of very intelligent, highly competent nerds? Maybe I'm too hard on the fellow, perhaps he's just suffering from some sort of distraction. (The last link may not be safe for work)

Re: Xbox 360's [sic] jamming Wireless Signals?
Come on, man, you're literate. Don't make me sic Bob on you!
A little more on topic - Xbox 360s are made by Microsoft. Microsoft has never ever worked or played well with others. Why is anybody surprised that any MS device would hog bandwidth?
The question should be, why does the FCC let them get away with it? Is it because of incompetent FCC people, coprrupt FCC people, or some other reason?

From being on the inside, talking to multiple Microsoft people including execs... I think their downloadable video's were aided...
Are all you Microsoft execs "morons", as Bob says? That would tend to explain some of the things I find maddening about the software ("error [n] there is no message for this error"; the fact that no two menu items are ever in the same place when an "upgrade" is obtained; the fact that an OS "upgrade" makes your computer run slower; etc. etc. etc.) -

Hanging Chad's anyone?
hanging chad's WHAT?
And note, this applies to BOTH sides equally
There is less difference between the two wings of the Republicrat Party than there were between the different factions of the USSR's Communist party.
There are more than two sides. I try to NEVER vote for a Republicrat, as the Republicrats are all bought and paid for by the corporations. Rather than waste my vote on a candidate who consistantly votes against my beliefs and wishes (like the Bono Act, DMCA, Patriot Act, Bankrupcy reform, etc) I split my vote betweeen the Greens and the Libertarians. A vote for a Republicrat is a wasted vote.

Re:Fox has there shows online with less ad's then
Fox has there shows online with less ad's then on tv and it download a lot faster then an torrent.
I can tell you like watching Fox, as you're not intelligent enough to spell "their" or "than", when to use "less" and when to use "fewer", that the verb "download" is plural while "downloads" is singular, that if a word starts with a consonant it's "a" and not "an", or when and when not to use apostrophe correctly.
How in the hell did you ever wind up at slashdot? And no, I don't want fries with that and please wipe the drool from your chin. -

You watched a lot of TV, didn't you?
It explains a lot of apparent illiteracy at slashdot (and on the internet in general).
I was wondering why it is that back in the 1950's
You weren't paying attention when they talked about apostrophes.
We may have not had a name for it in the 50's
Correction: We may have not had a name for it in the '50s (again, see Bob)
But now it just seams that cases of ADD and ADHD are just popping up all over the place.
You weren't paying attention when they taught spelling, either, although this might not be TV's fault, depending on your age. My kids had a thing in kindergarten where they spelled words any way they wanted; neither of them, not the "special" one nor the "gifted" one can spell worth a damn. So it might be your school's fault (actually it is anyway, as they should have teaching methods that would be considerate of an ADD child's special needs) or the over-reliance on spell checkers these days. The word is "seems". A "seam" is the line where your shirt is stitched together.

I have just spent way too much time googling for a comic that someone once linked in a
Here. /. comment. It was possibly titled "Atlas Shrugged, the sequel", or "Atlas Shrugged, Part II", or similar. It was hilarious, and an extremely to-the-point comment on the shortcomings of Rand's "philosophy".
No. If you've read the book, that comic does not really make sense. [SPOILERS AHEAD] Galt's Gulch was a closed, self-sufficient community. The "strikers" produced their own food, as well as other goods. Also, they return to the outside world a few weeks after the collapse of the government. -

> I have just spent way too much time googling for a comic that someone once linked in a /. comment. It was possibly titled "Atlas Shrugged, the sequel", or "Atlas Shrugged, Part II", or similar. It tells the story, in approx. one page, of how the story continued after all the Atlas heroes had settled down in their mountain seclusion: after some bragging of how they finally had gotten rid of all the useless people, they discover that they actually have no clue how to do all the mundane every-day tasks these people had done for them, like actually producing metals, cooking, or cleaning up. They all end up having to work the fields, muttering about how much it sucks. It was hilarious, and an extremely to-the-point comment on the shortcomings of Rand's "philosophy".
>
>It was hilarious, and an extremely to-the-point comment on the shortcomings of Rand's "philosophy".You're after Bob the Angry Flower.
BTAF is one of the funniest web comics I've ever read, but Stephen Notley mustn't have read the book too closely. The cartoon's still funny, but you have to ignore the fact that he got it precisely wrong.
*** spoiler warning ***
One of the key plot points in Atlas Shrugged is how John Galt (and other characters) managed to hide themselves when recruiting followers from the rest of society. They did so by working precisely the sorts of menial jobs that the BTAF cartoon implies they couldn't. They gave society what it wanted: their labor. They withheld from society what it needed: their mind.
Atlas Shrugged is about what happens when genius goes on strike. You can pass laws that force a man to work, but you can't pass laws that force him to invent. Suppose you're a nuclear researcher. If you're a capitalist (in the Randroid, "never take a dime from the government, and never owe it a dime in taxes" sense), a nuclear power plant provides you a much better return on investment. A nuclear bomb, by contrast, is only useful to a non-profit operation. To a capitalist, nuking a city is a terrible waste of potential (or actual!) customers, employees, and factories. To a government, it's just a policy decision to be made for the greater good.
Would WW2 have been lost (apart from a few million more casualties in the invasion of Japan) had the nuclear scientists of the day simply gone on strike, working at burger joints, riveting aircraft together, or casting bullets and turning shell casings on lathes, and passing on the really interesting jobs until after the war was over?
(Where Rand fails is that although she's half-right -- you can't compel genius to invent -- she's just as half-wrong, in that one of the hallmarks of genius is that not even the genius can compel himself not to invent. People like Teller had to invent the H-Bomb, even though WW2 was over, and the Cold War had barely begun. Open source developers had to invent Linux, GCC, and so on, and would have invented something much like it even in the absence of non-Free UNIXes and Microsoft.)
As for the literary criticism, it's valid -- but only up to the point. Stop assuming it's a novel, and start assuming it's a philosophical system masquerading as a novel, and the cardboard characters become much more forgivable. Much like the animals in Animal Farm, they're not there to entertain you, they're there to make a point. The scariest thing is that the talking heads on the TV sound more and more like her villains (and Orwell's) every day.

Re:oh, great...
Lets make a similar math book for all the boys who aren't interested in math. It should feature GI Joe's using math to kill each other...
Considering what I see on the internet we need a book featuring GI Joes to teach dumbasses like you how to use an apostrophe and the difference between the verbs "lose" and "loose".
If you can't communicate in writing effectively you will be seen as (like Bob says) an illiterate moron.

American's are more willing to pay for their techy gadgets
No, it's because "American's" are idiots, which is why we pay high prices for techy gadgets, and buy SUVs and drive them like the idiots we are when gas is three bucks a gallon. How do you think Bush got elected, then re-elected? We're IDIOTS, plain and simple. And the (mostly foreign) corporations know it and take advantage of it.
Maybe it's got something to do with our abysmal public education system?
