Easy way or fun way?
Easy way? What borcharc said. Just get an adapter like this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/151451123963?lpid=82&chn=ps), pop the drive out, and you'll be good. If you'd like to have some fun, there's a few ways to do that too. I used to have to drag files off of my old ThinkPad 760c all the time. I had the 760 running Windows 95, though, which made things a little easier... For you, you can use INTERLNK with DOSBox on the XP machine (parallel or serial passthroughs for DOSBox can be set up with these DOSBox files- http://home.arcor.de/h-a-l-900.... You can find INTERLNK for use with DOSBox or your 3.1 machine if it's missing here- http://www.kime.net/directcc/d...)
There's another way I found, using RAS, that I never used because I found it to be a bit complicated. If you'd like to play around with network shares in Windows 3.1, you're in for a treat! This page can show you how. http://www.kime.net/directcc/d...
For any of this to work, you'll need either a serial or parallel cable. You'll also need a modicum of patience, which is something I do not possess. That's why my 760 is currently functioning as a stand for the monitor attached to my Y580. Happy trails! -
Historical Computer simulations..In 1998, there was a contest to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM) . You had to write a program on a DOS based simulator, here's the instructions and a link to three different simulators.
Here's a java simulation of the Eniac computer. Try writing a program to make it work!

Re:Well...
Thank you for the reply. I assume you mean T-Com part of Deutsche Telekom, which was Privatized. As Part of the deal there was a law that any other ISP or Phone Carrier can lease lines up to the home for the same fair conditions anywhere in Germnay. That means if DSL is possible then you can get other from any other ISP. I don't know your address of course but i looked up for restaurant addresses in Baden Baden on google maps and just picked the first one and used the address (Holland Hotel Sophienpark GmbH, Sophienstraße 14 with Phone # 07221 3560) to look up availability for Arcor (one of many cheap ISPs, see http://arcor.de/ right on the fron page to the lower right) for which i had to five the street Address (Sophienstraße 14) and Area code of the Phone Number (07221). It stated that it is available at 6Mbit/s for 29.90 a month. After that i went to 1&1 (dsl.1und1.de) and check availability there for the same address, it says that the 16Mbit/s line is available for 24.90/Month for that address.
You are right though in that the actual speed might be a lot less, this is usually true if you live in an older home that does not have twisted pair wiring but only parallel wiring (the twisting cancels noise, without it the signals of other surrounding lines get mixed in). Simply if you live in a 100 year old house (not uncommon in germany) it probably also has 100 year old phone wiring.
In any case, if you can get inet from any provider you can get it from all of them. Whoever told you otherwise was lying (wouldn't be surprised if t-com lied to you, they are not a very good company, sort of like AT&T ;-) -
Put a mouse on Mars instead!
This has been already done with no need for exaggerated funding.

Re:Interesting...
You are both wrong, in a free market monopolies could exist, but they would be fair, because they have not the power of the government to prevent others to enter in the same market or in other competing markets. About the racists comment about Somalia, the very ignorant commenter could be surprised to learn that Somalia have laws but have not a real government: http://home.arcor.de/danneskjoeld/X/Som/ The Law of the Somalis A Stable Foundation for Economic Development In the Horn of Africa Michael van Notten And its people is way better off now than 15 years ago with a dictator. And they have investors like Coca Cola: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3865595.stm Their cellphone rates are the lowest of Africa (so running the businneses must not be so dangerous and costly). And more could be said. Google is your friend.

Advanced engines
Not too long ago, a brilliant discovery was made in engine design. It is now possible to build a clean and efficient two-stroke engine which runs on a variety of fuels. This engine is fully balanced, and stable enough to balance a golf ball on during operation. Furthermore, the engine is very compact, with a high power to weight ratio. (under 1lb/HP)
For more information on OPOC engines, have a look at the following:

Set the wayback machine
While Diablo's structure is entirely reminescent of earlier non real time games like Rogue, Hack, Larn, Angband etc. it really reminded me of Gateway to Apshai which was the action-i-fied version of the Temple of Apshai series. Same basic dungeon crawl but with real time combat using a joystick. It was even released on the Colecovision.
The arcade game Gauntlet was also a simplified action version of games like Rogue. -

Re:Then lower the pricesSimple psychology 101 stuff. People want what they can't have, they more they can't have it, the more they want it.
Microsoft ships a small amount of 360s for a period of time, this builds hype because it will be in an state of "sold out" for some time, people see this and think "hey, this must be pretty hot stuff, I want one", eventually supply will increase to a more reasonable level, but only after the hype has been built.
Don't you watch South Park?Hey, everybody! Check out the all new Cartmanland! It's our Graaand Opening! Cartmanland has over a hundred fabulous rides, six roller coasters, and tons of great surprises! And the best part is: You can't come!! That's right, because at Cartmanland, only I, Eric Cartman, can get in! That means only I can ride the all-new Tornado Twister, a roller coaster that splashes in the water! Wow! It's the greatest amusement park in the Colorado area! And nobody can go!! Especially Stan and Kyle!! HAHA!! So come on down to Cartmanland now! But don't plan on getting past the parking lot, 'cause remember: So much to do at Cartmanland, but you can't come! Especially you, Stan and Kyle.

Two of the best alternativesthat I have come across are biodiesel production from algae, and more recently the flying electric generator. The latter is only used for producing energy, but effective Hydrogen storage would make it even more useful. (Take a look, it really is an interesting idea, and should be perfectly feasible...)
Even so, in terms of energy density, it is hard to beat hydrocarbons, and the distribution system is already in place. Since the algae consume as much CO2 as is produced by the combustion of the diesel, there is no net increase in greenhouse gasses. It is effectively solar power, with an efficient energy carrier. In addition, the OPOC diesel engine, allows for very small size and high efficiency. (it is ~1lb/HP, or ~0.6g/W
;) More details are available here. Also, when flywheel energy storage matures a bit more, it should allow for some great improvements in electric and hybrid cars. Flywheels have extraordinary power density, and can be charged and dischared in seconds, which allows them to recapture ~80% of the energy during braking, and provide for decent acceleration. There is some information at AFS Trinity, though the site could be a bit better. The basic ideas behind this flywheel tech are fascinating in themselves, but I've already wandered far enough off topic...

I am curious to know more about the basis of the geological methods of fossil dating, if you (or someone else) can provide a layperson's summary.
A Google search turned up this, which seems to offer a pretty good write-up. The gist of it is that there are more ways of radiologically dating geologic material than just the Carbon-14 method. -

Re:What's taking so long?
Whatever DSL i have i still must pay the line rental to T-COM
That's not necessarily true - it depends where you live.
Go here and see if they are available in your area (or call them on 0800 1070220). An ISDN connection (dual line) plus 1000 kilobit DSL (max. 1Gb transfer per month) costs 30 Euros/month. Add an extra 10 Euros for flat rate internet. Actually, they're currently doing an offer where you get the 2000 kilobit connection for the same price. You can pay more, and get 3000 kilobit, but that's the most you'll get out of either them or the Deutsche Telekom.
I changed recently, and I've been very happy with their service so far. A number of friends have changed too, so it seems to be quite popular. The service isn't limited to big cities anymore either - I live in a small village (about 4500 people). I've no idea how what availability there is in Meck-Pom though.

And seated around the basement tableAnd, seated around the table in the basement, are the guy who designed "ET" for the Atari 2600, the guy who designed "Doom" for the N-64 (Hey! I wanted it even blacker, but they would not let me!) and the guy who gave us Plattermania for Atari 400/800. The designer of the Nintendo Virtual Boy would have shown up, but he got lost on the way: poor chap has been rendered blind by using his own game.
Nothing will come of this meeting, except there are rumors that Sony has some sort of devious plan to get these guys appointed as head of Microsoft's X-Box division.

Re:Use Windows 2000
Actually, I somewhat prefer the XP GUI, although I invariably deactivate much of the eye-candy, along with the file-extension- and keyboard-shortcut-hiding, the "common tasks" nonsense, the search puppy,
...alright, so almost all of it is pointless and annoying. It's skinnable, though - you just need to apply a little patch before you can use third-party *.msstyles (no shareware required). Since I hate the blocky "classic" look at least as much as the waterwingness of "Luna", that's a good thing. I also really like those file-browsing-capable toolbars in addition to the usual "quick launch" type ones - are they available on 2K? (Example screenshot)
As for not so superficial differences --
Fast user switching. (Not particularly necessary, but can be useful.)
Remote desktop. (Available on 2K? I guess one might as well use VNC or something?)
Somewhat better MS-DOS app support? (Not sure, again. Can't say I'd miss it much anyway.)
Built-in firewall. (Which I never use.)
Clear Type.
Better out-of-the-box hardware support (Presumably.)
(I'm sure there's more.)
Not sure though whether any of this really constitutes a "reason". I've not used 2K at home so I'm not sure what it's like with all the latest service packs installed. I guess right now I'd choose 2K over XP myself if I had to make the choice. -

Even worse in Germany
"We can shout at people that the government can read our email and chat logs, but very few people will make the move to encryption. People are apathetic and lazy - unless encrypted email and chat is enabled BY DEFAULT in the next version of email and chat programs, people won't do it."
I can only agree with this. Living in Germany I followed the discussion about the data storage a bit.
This includes the knowledge that every offerer of telecommunications in Germany has to provide the hardware to monitor and store communication details - like email or your mobiles SMS - from January 2005 on, and that on their on costs.
As a result to this I describe the privacy problem in my signature of every email, including a link (http://home.arcor.de/ja.stiebing/gpg sorry - german only) to a page with further information (respectively links to information) about the german law and a brief usage of gpg. Although the people I communicate with all are aware of the dangers of the 'glassy human' (like they call it in Germany), NO ONE OF THEM has started to use encryption - well one friend of mine at least thought about doing it.
You are absolutely right to claim that encryption has to be enabled by default - and it has to be available in every kind of communication program for the net. I hope that eg. Opera will have at least the possibility to include GPG in its upcoming version (perhaps allowing the users to point to an online GPG key?).
Keep your data private - or would you also like everyone enquiring your underwear?

Re:Passive heating = the HURD of architecture
I guess you have not done much research on this!!
I and my family live in a 128m2 passivly heated flat in Germany. It is in a block of 39 other flats. We have no heating system just good insulation, draught proofing and large triple glazed windows. They is a piped ventilation system (NOT air conditioning) with a heat exchanger to recover a lot of the heat from the outgoing air. We can open the windows, but usally do not need to as fresh air is constently supplied. The kitchen looks out of large windows on to the central courtyard. The kitchen has a ceiling :-)
Last winter the inside temperature never dropped before 19 degrees inside.
It is a revelation in comfort: especially as I spent the last 15 years in draughty 100 year old houses.
And building cost wise there is not much in it: you spend extra on insulation and good windows but you save on not fitting a boiler and raditors !!

Re:External
I use a Mac, and it's hard to find someware for internal PCI tuners.
I'm using an AlchemyTV DVR in my PowerMac. It's a PCI TV card with remote and DVR software. For about $20 less you can get the same card without the remote or DVR capabilities.
Another option is finding an old bt848-based card and experimenting with iTV.
As I see it, the main reason to go with internal rather than external is latency. If you're planning to play video games through your TV card, anything USB or FW is out of the question. Also don't forget that if you own a DV cam with video-in, and a VCR you can use as a tuner, you probably don't need to buy a TV card at all.
If you're not planning to attach a console to your TV card, I think the best option would be investing in a DV bridge of some sort, and attaching a VCR. Though you might not care about it now, being able to edit analog captures, either from television or VHS with iMovie/FCP/FCE is a nice luxury. -
Re:major missing featuresI personally think that the file manager shouldn't "bother" to impliment things such as Unix permissions, but to abstract them to "Windows standards", if you will (maybe with an option for Unix permissions?)
Wouldn't that eventually (or potentially) cause more confusion and chaos than sticking to the Unix permissions, which after all are what really matters?
(And what's with this XPde registry editor I saw in the screenshots? I'm puzzled. Isn't that taking things a little too far? Is regedit "user-friendly"? And what does HKEY_CURRENT_USER mean to a Linux system? Or is the power it wields limited to the XPde desktop? In either case, why make it act like a very Windows-specific tool that the intended audience isn't likely to have lots of experience with? I'm quite willing to use Linux more than I do now, but smoke and mirrors might not exactly help me get into it enough to, say, troubleshoot anything on my own. (It's not like I was keeping a pet *nix-geek in a box under my bed.) Ohwell. I guess I'm not the kind of person this is intended to appeal to. Or maybe there's something I'm not getting. Probably both.)
Aside from the complete computer retard, it seems nearly everyone has their own "custom" taskbar setup (...)
Not to mention having quick access to various directories like in this screenshot; then again, few people seem to use that so they won't miss it.

Good free software for Windows
Despite Microsoft's press releases to the contrary, Windows machines are not secure and need decent firewall and antivirus software. I see others have already mentioned the Kerio firewall, so I'll just add that it can be easily extended with Sponge's excellent, freely available filters. (I'm using set 2, but there are versions that are both more or less rigorous). I've also AVG Antivirus installed it seems to work well enough.
Some other useful free utilities:
Tclockex
A small utility that greatly increases the usefullness of the system tray clock. You can have the date as well as the time, as well as a resource monitor that lets you know at a glance how the system is doing.
AboutTime"
A little applet that sets the system clock from a list of time servers. Works well and unobtrusively.
7-zip
An easy to use explorer plug-in that understands most kinds of compressed files.
CDex
A great tool for ripping / converting CDs and mp3s.
X-teq>
A very powerful utility that lets you change pretty much everything that's changeable in Windows. Allows you to set Windows update registration done, which would only be useful to pirates and won't be mentioned here.
The Proxomitron
A web proxy that strips out ads, pop-ups and other garbage.
I'm more familiar with Redhat, but I have no doubt Mandrake will come out of the box with programs that are functionally equivalent to the ones listed here. -
Re:Look, ma, I'm on Slashdot!
I wanted to second Brian's rallying call to support independent developers -- these people are doing it out of love, and it tends to show. Another independently produced game is A Tale in the Desert, an incredibly innovative MMOG which has one of the most sophisticated and complex world-models I've ever seen in a game...Moreover, it's the only RPG-style game I've seen in which people become truly skilled at doing what they choose to do (gemcutting? gear-box design? pyrotechnics?) by doing it, and performing the complex machinations involved. So players actually become skilled, rather than characters just advancing a skill number! There's at lot more -- check out the website if you are at all interested. Only in an independent game like ATITD would the lead developer give out his cellphone number in case the server goes down!
No, I don't work for them -- I'm just really impressed by the game and want to spread the word.
Another independent game I'm keeping my eyes on is They Came From Hollywood!, which looks to be a great update on the old "Crush, Crumble, and Chomp!" concept... -
Re:Free Andromeda Alternatives
If you're talking about Apache, then you're not talking about streaming.
Idiot,
Since you are grossly uninformed and exceedingly stupid, let me spell it out for you. "Streaming" is defined as "A technique for transferring data such that it can be processed as a steadyÂand continuous stream." The key feature is that the data is played as it is downloaded.
Apache can very easily stream audio. It can do this running on platforms aside from Windows.
If I were as stupid as you are, I'd be depressed to.
