Re:In other News...
I'm not saying that you're wrong, but can you give any sources to back your statements up? Apple does not say that its iTMS tracks are taken from the masters, and considering the fact that Jobs said he went to some length to get the rights to sell "untethered" music online, it seems unlikely that the record labels would give in even more by letting Apple use the masters.
Steve Jobs said that they use the studio masters during the event announcing the launch of the iTunes Music Store, you can read about it in this article if you don't want to take my word about it.
Comparing the bitrate of an AAC to an AIFF does not tell the tale properly either. In an AIFF file there are all sorts of harmonics and other information that are faithfully reproduced but never heard by people because they are drowned out by louder portions od the music. In an AAC they cut down the portions of the audio that are, for all intensive purposes, inaudible and instead use the bandwidth to reproduce the sounds that you can hear more faithfully. So a plain vanilla comparison of bitrates is just a pissing contest and doesn't really compare the quality of the files.
Yes I am saying that to me the AAC files downloaded sound the same as the AIFF files on a CD, I never claimed any kind of scientific comparison. In the end that is all that matters to me. As for AAC verses MP3 there have been a number of studies that show bitrate for bitrate AACs come out sounding better. The comparisons are out there, Google for them if you want. -
Get an alternative !
I agree with you too on each count. However, you dont need to do without REAL content.
Check out Real Alternative , which plays all Real media files, without the crud. While you are on that website, also check out QuickTime Alternative

Would you like to upgrade to QuickTime Pro?
Also, don't forget QuickTime Alternative, assuming you're unfortunate enough to have to play QuickTime files.
-
Re:RealOne"unfortuantly there is no other player which plays their media"
There is Real Alternative. I'm not sure how legal it is, but it plays the files and I don't have to install the RealOne crap. Until I found it I simply didn't use any sites that relied upon realplayer files. I was so happy when Amazon.com added WMP samples.

iTMS AAC M4a files not compatible
I'm not sure if this is from their DRM stuff of whatever but if i try and convert an MP3 to AAC format it is only playable in iTMS and Quicktime. That flat out sucks. The new Winamp 5 can rip cd's now to AAC by default and they play on just about everything that supports it. So why don't apple's m4a's play nice with other software?
-
Re:Lot's of sales... No profit...
Don't know if its been mentioned or not, but those million people also installed the latest version of QuickTime along with iTunes (assuming they installed it). I gotta wonder if that's the biggest jump Apple's ever had in QuickTime penetration in the Windows market.
No more crummy Apple Quicktime player. -
Try QuickTime Alternative
Try QuickTime Alternative. It is "customized" release of QuickTime Player. Very nice and fast (without GUI bulk). It also includes Media Player Classic - free player similar to Windows Media Player 6.4, but original one and sooooo fast - it's unbelievable. P.S. These guys also have RealPlayer Alternative. It even includes DirectShow filter, so you'll be able to play RealMedia shit using for example Microsoft's Media Player.

QuickTime Alternative
The best is QuickTime Alternative, made by the Kazaa Lite guys. Get it here.
-
No need to install the official Quicktime Player
"Sorry folks, Quicktime 6 only."
Windows users can download the extra cool Media Player Classic. This slim, effective, GPLed all-in-one player has extensions for playing Quicktime, Real, and many other formats. No need to install bloated proprietary players for each and every format out there.

Microsoft did backtrack since that slashdot story
Outlook Express: Death Is Exaggerated (PCWorld.com)

OSNews Discussion
OE might be in the IE boat tho, meaning no release until the next release of Windows, as suggested on Beta News. So there will be an opportunity, but not a gaping hole as the next release of Windows will forcefully spread the next version of OE again. -
Windows already has an all in one media player
It is called Media Player Classic. It's hosted on sourceforge and is open source! It also conviently doesn't include Quicktime or Real codec's but a quick search on google for Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative gives you those codecs! It can play everything provided you have the proper codec installed including DVDs so everyone on windows enjoy. Appropriate links follow below:

Hmmm... Here's some linksThat's actually a really good point. Here's what i found:
This story which says "It is our expectation that
those who use our service with unlicensed or unauthorized third-
party clients will likely not be able to log on after October 15,"
Microsoft spokesperson Sean Sundwall told BetaNews.
"We would encourage those third parties to contact us to work out
agreements by which they can continue to have their customers access our network."A Techweb stating: Those who don't update won't be able to access
the service, nor will unauthorized or unlicensed third-party clients be allowed to connect
to MSN's IM network, the company said. -

Re:Not such a bad idea
Well, perhaps as part of PC Satisfaction, MS would actually have to test their patches sufficiently enough to make sure they work the first time, or at least make sure that your system can be rolled back if problems still pop up.

Re:Encryption of data streams?
Perhaps one step against this trend would be to encrypt the P2P connection between users, with some kind of public key encryption?

You see them all the time over on BetaNews, people complaining because beta/alpha software is buggy. Weird world.

Re:Release candidates
"IMO, Microsoft would benefit by issuing public release candidates for new OS versions and patches."
Umm... they do.
For new OS versions it's called the Customer Preview Program. They've been doing this since at least Win95. In addition there are thousands involved even earlier in the process with the beta.
For servicepacks, the distribution is a bit more limited and they only go out to beta members as well as partners and such. Windows 2000 SP4 Beta Invites Sent
Hotfixes are more difficult, because they suffer from rapid release. They're rolled up into service packs, which then go through the public testing process. -
2003 is the year of Mozilla's dead....
This is not a troll post!
2003 is the year of Mozilla's dead.... at least of Mozilla's current form.
The reason? AOL Communicator! I downloaded a beta version from www.datakill.com and I think, it has a bright future.
The reasons:- It seems that AOL is finally going to push Gecko to the masses (It's branded as AOL product, not Netscape)
- AOL Communicator is split up in single applications (ac_mail.exe, ac_im.exe,...) - no ''all in one'' like Mozilla or Netscape.
- (And that's my peronal favourite, 'cause that's what I prayed for since ages) AOL Communictor is written using wxWindows!
Yes it's true. Finally they got rid of the sluggish XUL interface and still being multi-plattform.
Phoenix (or whatever the future name will be) has helped, but Phoenix' interface is still somewhat slow compared to native Windows apps. Phoenix' GUI toolkit is also not fully aware of Visual Styles (skins for WinXP) - the menus look ''old school'', while the other apps have flat/skinned menus.
AOL Communicator (thanks to wxWindows) uses native widgets everywhere.
Quote from the included copyright-notice.txt:AOL Communicator uses the following libraries and modules:
wxWindows libraries Copyright (c) 1998 Julian Smart, Robert
Roebling. The wxWindows source code, available under the
wxWindows Library License, Version 3, can be found at
http://www.wxwindows.org.
While the beta version does only consist of an eMail app and the Instant Messenger (compatible with AIM and ICQ), AOL is also developing a browser component.
If you have a look into the file ''AOL Communicator\locale\cat\ac_help.mo'', you can find the following strings (BTW, ''Photon'' is the codename for the Communicator):
About Photon Browser
Photon Browser is not currently your default browser.
Would you like to make it your default browser?
Oh yes, I can't wait for the final release. I hope there will be an open source version of it (without the AOL specific stuff like AOL Mail or the Instant Messenger - called Mozilla 2.0 or something like that), to allow porting it to other platforms.
Oh, BTW... I did an experiment and it worked: You can move the mail folder from Mozilla's profile directory to AOL Communicator's profile directory. All your mails stay intact.
Honestly, I don't know why the Mozilla/Netscape developers waste their time in creating a new toolkit (the one that Phoenix uses), if they should better convince their bosses from AOL to open the source of the Communicator.PS: Thanks for reading this post and (hopefully) not modding me down as ''Troll''
:)

Not really new "News"
For all you guys trying to read the article and cannot, here some more infos: The actual announcement is about a month old. Here's one story on internetnews (ty to

Check out icoya WordXML (click solutions, than icoya WordXML). It is a high performance extension for Microsoft Word in order to convert content easily into the open, format-neutral and manufacturer-independent XML format.

This isn't a definite...
AOL 8.0 beta for windows that just came out does not use Gecko... it uses IE. BetaNews has a story about it. It's possible they could do it in the next beta, but you'd figure they'd want to get it out there as early as possible, especially now that v1.0 is official.

Sony support sucks too.
I don't doubt this happened at all. Sony is about as bad at support at MS is. Which is why I will *never* buy a Sony laptop, because a friend of mine did....
He bought a Sony laptop which has problems with MS XP. So I helped him flash his BIOS, still problems with XP. We even tried installing ME on it, but Sony has no drivers for his laptop with ME, and has stated they had no intentions of producing drivers for users with *older* VAIOs to upgrade to newer OSes.
Sonys support line boasted a broken link so now I understood his tremendous frustration level. So armed with a boatload of documentation on this issue, I went with him to Best Buy, and they let him exchange his VAIO for other hardware matching the price of the laptop. The magic words that resonated with Best Buys manager where: "Hey man he just wants to play games on his laptop". So I helped him pick out a HP desktop (No Compaqs or eMachines nosirreebob), and a boatload of hardware, all equalling the price of that crappy laptop.
Sony wants to lock you into proprietary firewire and audio hardware, and hang you out to dry after they get your $.

Windows XP Usability
Many people brag about performance and what not and everything I have read refutes this infoworld article.
