Cuban traffic is no longer using satellite
-
Re: Hmmm
Food for thought, here is something you might be interested in.
http://chuckspinney.blogspot.c... -
Today nearly all Cuban traffic is over the cable
This study was done last spring, when significant amounts of Cuban international traffic were routed over satellite, but in July nearly all international traffic moved to the undersea cable, significantly improving performance. Furthermore, the study used the only RIPE Atlas probe in Cuba, so may not have been representative of the entire island at that time. For details on the transition in July and the situation today, see http://laredcubana.blogspot.com/2015/11/before-and-after-cubas-shift-to-alba-1.html.

Re:Yes, it does suck
The screen actually isn't all that bad. What's driving me nuts are the sponsored lock screens (Ugh, that damn "Game Of War" ad!), and the lack of Google services. There is no YouTube app, no Google Maps, no GMail, no Chrome browser, and no Play Store. Instead, you're stuck with the Amazon equivalents... and some of them kinda suck.
I've been working on my own review of this tablet. It's located here:

The comments here are fucking depressing to read
Stopped reading comments on other sites a long time ago, but the Slashdot moderation thing used to work mostly.
He's 14 years old FFS. I don't remember much of what I did or did not do at that age, but I am damn sure I wouldn't come off great from a trial by social media.
At least above average intelligence, socially awkward kid probably misuses the word 'invent'. Maybe he was a bit desperate for attention. Don't know, don't care. He got handcuffed out of his classroom, in every part of the world I have been to that is every level of messed up, and I wouldn't grudge him getting some time hanging out with people / institutions he looks up to. Maybe he wouldn't make this photo on merit: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qMS0...
So fucking what. He got handcuffed out of his classroom. If he gets to visit NASA and Google and Facebook, that's pretty commensurate compensation. What the kid needed was some off the radar time hanging out with tech / science folks, then back to (a different) school. Pre social media, that would be possible - it would make the papers, then fade away, people forget your name.
But now, we put a 14 year old's life under the type of scrutiny no one would survive unscathed. Some of the comments that I would love to annotate with 'HE'S FOURTEEN'.
Browsing at '2' now:
1) He is not a particularly bright kid and is being unduly celebrated.
He's not particularly bright and spends his time publically denouncing unduly celebrated 14 year olds on internet forums.
2) 20,000 volts should be enough for anybody
Joke about tasering a skinny non violent 14 year old kid. HAHA
3) Sorry, but you need to be part of a celebrated group, re-assemble your clock into something that some people say resembles an IED, and then have the school go apeshit and overreact to it.
I made a better clock when I was 14 and no one cared, so I'll piss all over this 14 year old.
4) So, they finally got their 15min of fame, and now let's just be happy to have them out of the country and back where they want to be in the first place.
The funniest thing about the 'us vs them' theme is the denial of reality. The family are Americans, they hold American passports, they are and remain American in the only way that counts.
5) IMO, this was all part of a preconceived plan to scare people at school by bringing in a suspicious-looking device and then cry discrimination when called out on it.
(4 Insightful) Sigh
6) Yep.... I hate to say it, but I think a LOT of us just got fooled on this one, at least initially. As techie geeks , we *wanted* to believe this was all about a young, brilliant kid getting held back by the system.
Usual predictable media cycle of build them up then tear them down. Actually I don't think any real tech geek was 'fooled' even before the clock tear downs etc. I saw a curious kid stuck in a crap system being treated abysmally by public taxpayer funded institutions. The fix was to get him into a better environment where he can make what he can of himself. Not this circus. If you got fooled, the fault is yours, don't put it on the kid.
7) If you're muslim, you don't bring anything to school that can be mistaken for a bomb
I had the privilege of being brought up in an environment where that wasn't much of a concern when I went to school. I want all 14 year olds to have that privilege.
And everyone goes on about 'muslim kid', when did we start stamping religion at birth? His muslim-ness didn't seem to be that big a part of his life before this whole business. Now we've given his dad an excuse to cut him off from the rest of the world, take him to Mecca, maybe enrol him in religious classes, move to a muslim country, all at a very impressionable age. If the kid turns into a bearded islamis

Dyson knows nothing about climate change
Dyson has succeeded in destroying his reputation as a serious and credible observer and commentator of society and his times by propagating pseudo-science around climate change. His actual scientific achievements are of course spared.
Freeman Dyson is not a climate scientist. He's a scientist who dabbles in theorizing about the climate because he wants to. He is trading on his name and reputation, to the detriment of both. It doesn't matter how smart you are or how accomplished you are in other areas; if it's not your specific area of expertise, then you're in over your head.\
If you want to see Dyson's theorizing on climate systematically and thoroughly destroyed - (amongst other things he gets caught in just plain old logical fallacies) by actual climatologists, here's what that looks like:

Re:dont want it to taste like meat
I don't see any details about diet there, other than a few mentions of struggling to find food, and a brief mention of how they would eat any remotely edible part of a seal, including rotten flippers. (Though I only scanned through it.)
Anyways some Inuit ate 100% meat, and didn't seem to have any difficulty. Two people ate 100% meat for an entire year and didn't have any ill effects:

Re:Artistic, yes. Art, no.
> a video game can be artistic when judged for their artistic elements, but since they have primary functions beyond art, they cannot be wholly works of art
The word is called super set. As in Form + Function designed to bring out emotions.
Guess what, most movies at the box office have a function beyond art too: Too make money.
This is a red herring.
> I don't think something can be art in the traditional sense if it is digital.
You're going to tell me all those artists who used to shoot pictures/movies in analog, such as photographer Sebastião Salgado, and now shoots digitally are now magically not creating art?? i.e. Salt of the Earth
1. That's completely disrespectful to them, their craft, and their skill.
2. How fucking retarded can you get???
Why the hell does the medium even matter??
It doesn't for painting.
It doesn't for photography.
It doesn't for film.
It doesn't for sculpting.
It doesn't for acting. So why single out the digital medium??
Video game programming also can involve creative use of the hardware in solving problems. Writing efficient code is an art form, in contradistinction to it being just a purely deterministic process.
> Art must have the potential to be a failure.
1. Says who?? Who died and made you king of definitions???
2. Whether the medium is analog or digital **both** have the potential for failure:
Oh look! My memory card died and I lost my pictures.
Or, my hard drive died and I lost my pictures.
Or, the program corrupted my picture.
Or, I over-wrote my original and I no longer have it.Gee, room for failure in the digital world too.
> Digital photography captures images and editing alters those images whereas film captures single, uneditable moments.
/sarcasm Riiiight, because there was zero variation or control in exposure, shutter settings, or in the darkroom film developing process. NOT.How about _actually_ educating yourself about photographers such as Ansel Adams instead of making ignorant claims.
Adams developed all his own film, using a small space in his parents home, and while in the field. He first used matte and changed to glossy paper to increase the tonal values. He spoke often about using the natural light and small apertures with long exposures. Adams also suggested to "visualize" each image before taking it. This means, taking your time, walking around looking at things from different points of view.
Adams, was a promoter of "pure photography" "Pure photography is defined as possessing no qualities of technique, composition or idea, derivative of any other art form.' Soft focus lenses were prohibited, but in Adams earlier work of the Monolith, he used a strong red filter to create a black sky. Adams mounted a camera platform on the top of his station wagon, to get a better vantage point over the immediate foreground and a better angle for expansive backgrounds. Most of his images from 1943 forward were made from the roof of his car.
Whether you use filters pre-processing or post-processing is completely irrelevant. The effect is the same. You are still _interpreting_ and _presenting_ a representation of the scene that _you_ find interesting. Whether this is done chemically, or digitally, this doesn't change the intent.
To present a beautiful picture.
Bullshit excuses like "soft lenses were prohibited" doesn't change this fact.
--
Why is always the people who have never written a game are always the one trying to make excuses for why games "can't" be labeled as art??? -

Re:I'm not normally one to say things like this...
Your post literally makes no sense to me. I have been reading a lot about Putin and Russia for a couple of years now - on top of a lifelong vague interest - and the thing that impresses me most is how much sense they make, and how I never catch them in a lie. In extreme contrast to public events in Britain and the USA.
Even Bill Clinton told CNN a couple of years ago that Putin was very smart and completely honest. 'Asked if Putin ever reneged on a promise, Clinton was categorical: “He did not... He kept his word on all the deals we made,” Clinton said'. Coming from an ex-US president of which the same could definitely not be said, this amounted to an admission that Putin was a better man than Clinton. Along with the praise there was, inevitably, some criticism; but the worst things Clinton could find to say were that Putin was "brutally blunt", "has a skewed sense of humour" (probably Clinton hasn't had much experience of Russian humour), and might be inclined to put Russia's success ahead of the welfare of individual Russians (quite unlike any US politicians, who always put the poor first).
When you write in a public forum that "the problem for me with putin and russia is... they are fucking batshit insane", the only conclusion the rest of us are likely to reach is that it is YOU who are insane - or, more charitably, ignorant and provincial. All human beings have strengths and weaknesses, and people from distant lands often behave in ways that puzzle us - but one of the great lessons of life is that, in the last analysis, we are all very much alike. And none of us are much better (if at all) than others.
Russia has about the same number (and power) of nuclear weapons as the USA. And, believe me, it is not the Russian nuclear arsenal that worries me. I am quite convinced that Russia's armed forces are for the defence of Russia only - even if that occasionally necessitates air strikes in Syria, or such places in the "near abroad". The only way in which Russia would ever be a threat to the existence of the West is if the West pushes Russia to the very brink of destruction.

The deep root cause of all of this is that we trust our code to do what it says on the tin... we need to fork everything to invert this assumption and trust nothing (except the OS kernel)... it's a lot of work, but it can be done.

Imagine your gated communnity home here? http://static.panoramio.com/ph... And there is a lot of that kind of shit left over and still completely useless land long after the late 19th century mine companies just declared bankruptcy and walked away.
This is exactly what happens when for profit corporations can avoid cleaning up after themselves - hell, it only makes sense.
Now, anti regulationists - just who the hell are you to tell us that one group of people are allowed to destroy land forever, and not allow anyone afterwards to make a profit?
Not a cent will be made from forestry.
Not a single real estate company will make anything form building a housing development on that land.
And here's a river that used to be quite a tourist fishing draw, placing money in the hands of hoteliers, bait shops and transportaion to get 'em there. - but never again The pyrite created sulfuric acid is so strong it eats aluminum canoes, but there is zero life in the river anyway.

That will take a while -- Cuba is one of the least connected countries in the world and they are making a big deal of making slow DSL "available" to half their homes by 2020.
That being said, there are good reasons for them to remain independent -- I wouldn't wish Comcast or TWC on anyone.

This should go beyond just two years of free monitoring... what do I do when someone is out there impersonating me? Hope I have an alibi when they come looking for mr, but that's sort of tough to do when you're a basement dwelling hermit...
I'm an identity theft victim, albeit a lucky one who caught it early before too much damage was done, and it was scary when someone opened a credit card in my name. What's scarier, though, is if a criminal is arrested and gives your name/SSN/DOB. I used to read the blog of someone who was going through just that. He was fired from his job because he failed a background check, couldn't find a new job, and had police stalk him because they considered him a criminal (despite the fact that "his" mugshot looked nothing like him). Even when he got one department to remove his "conviction" from their records, it just flowed back from another police database. It took years before anyone would listen and years more before he started to make any real progress.
Unfortunately, you can't stop this with a simple credit freeze like you can stop normal identity theft. In fact, there's no way to stop this at all. Any criminal with your name/SSN/DOB could give that information when they are arrested and pass their arrest record on to you.

Re:Let's face it...
How so? At no point does the Bible state that God only created humans nor does it exclude the idea that he created beings not in his image. I'm no biblical scholar nor a Christian but I don't see where it is incompatible or anything. It doesn't even extend to beyond the Earth so far as I know, except for the heavens which can be defined in a variety of ways. I have read the entire Bible but I didn't really understand all of it so I may be missing something. I should probably read it in a format other than the KJV.
Indeed. C.S.Lewis' Space Trilogy is a good fictional example, and his essay Religion and Rocketry is his take in an apologetic vein.
(Not to mention Jesus' I have sheep that are not of this fold remark.)

The problem is economics and liability
Insurance companies have squeezed nearly all the profit out of the pharmacy. So, even for a high volume store a lot of the corporate people are loathe to allow more than one pharmacist to be working at any one time. Pharmacists aren't cheap at around $1/minute. And when you're only making $1-2 per script, that's even more expensive. The problem, though, is that, by law (and for good reason), nearly everything that happens in the pharmacy needs to go through the pharmacist. Best cough med? Only the pharmacist can answer. Dangerous med? Needs counseling? Only the pharmacist. New phone in? Only the pharmacist. Then, every single prescription needs to be checked and signed off on by the pharmacist. You have to understand that literally the only person behind the counter who has more than a few months formal training is the pharmacist and that, again by law, they are ultimately responsible for ANYTHING that goes wrong behind the counter. The pharmacist legally needs to be involved in everything that happens in the pharmacy and everything that happens takes them away from finishing your prescription. Don't get me started on insurance rejects. Those can literally take all day.
This pretty much sums it up. It's irreverent, but it sums it up.
As for centralizing, we're doing that. Several chains (Walgreens and Wal-Mart come to mind) have invested in centralized pharmacies that fill maintenance meds with robots and deliver the filled prescriptions to the local pharmacy. They can fill thousands of scripts in a single night. It's a HUGE time saver when it works right (which it usually does).
As far as e-prescribing goes, all the pharmacies are on board and most of the doctors are coming around. it's usually a lot better than the illegible handwritten scripts. It just allows for new forms of stupid, though. I've gotten no shortage of prescriptions telling me that patients use their diabetic testing supplies orally. REALLY? -
Re:That's probablyRight, and that probably speeds up the process for you by a LOT. Like I said, though, it's not just you. Other people's meds can hold up your order. Most systems in retail pharmacy prioritize on a first-come-first-served basis. There are other priorities in there (like if you won't be back until tomorrow or if you just had 4 teeth pulled and you're bleeding on my counter), but there's little manual prioritizing. So when I'm trying to type up your prescription, but I keep getting a reject for someone who's been there for an hour, the computer is going to make me take care of their problem first. Your paying cash just means that I won't have any issues with YOUR prescription when I finally get to it.
If you want a pretty good, over-the-top description of a pretty bad day (and possibly a good laugh), check out this blog article. It's extremely irreverent but covers quite a few of the problems that we actually do deal with in a given day.

By the way... I don't care if the public knows what I think about you. But you removed the contexts. Yet again. It's very telling that you didn't include any of the things that prompted those opinions from me. No context. [Lonny Eachus, 2015-09-25]
The context is that you were cussing at me because I refuted Latour's Sky Dragon Slayer nonsense. From the same conversation:
... if you can actually, successfully complete a refutation of Latour, and show us, and it checks out, I will be happy to declare to everyone that I was wrong and you were right about that issue. You have my word. I will shout it out loud. I'll admit it here on Slashdot and even open a Twitter account and post it there.
... [Jane Q. Public, 2014-09-09]Jane/Lonny, you gave your word that you would declare to everyone that you were wrong about Latour's Sky Dragon Slayer claims. But over a year later you still haven't, even after seeming to realize your Slayer claims violate "kindergarten-level physics". That's how much Lonny's "word" is worth.
@DanaRohrabacher He has expressed the view that a scientist is only a worthy human being if he/she agrees with DumbSci. Else a criminal. [Lonny Eachus, 2015-09-25]
Unbelievable! Lonny baselessly whines about being "libeled" and maliciously lies about me to a member of Congress. Lonny can't link to me expressing that disgusting view, because I never did. Lonny Eachus is lying again. As usual, he's projecting his own hysterical claims:
YOU should be put in jail for the ethical equivalent of shouting "fire" in a crowded theater... when there wasn't a fire. THAT DOES HARM. Real cost, real damage. You're a criminal. And not in some hypothetical future, but right now. [Lonny Eachus, 2015-07-10]
In contrast, I've politely disagreed with scientists without once calling anyone a criminal or a "despicable human being" (presumably meaning "not worthy") like Jane/Lonny Eachus does.
@DanaRohrabacher You might ask him about his own comments re: scientists like Roy Spencer, Judith Curry, John Christy, Richard Lindzen, etc. [Lonny Eachus, 2015-09-25]
Why? I've said Dr. Spencer is wrong. Lonny also clai

Re:Unintended consequences
It's not a false dichotomy. There continue to exist coal plants right now, and have for decades in the past, and will be for some time to come. Because renewables haven't replaced them. Therefore we have gone and chosen coal over nuclear for decades. It's a *real* dichotomy. Making the discussion nuclear vs. renewables is the false dichotomy.
Think of Ahmdahl's law. You should focus your efforts on fixing the big problem, then reassess the situation afterward. Even if I agreed that it's important to transition off of nuclear, it's just not even in the same league as fossils, so we should replace fossils first. Perhaps that will happen naturally as battery and grid transmission losses decrease.
My favorite is when nuke fans include dam collapses from decades before the first nuclear power plant was ever built. Nevermind that if we had nuclear power in 1900, we would have had some more Chernobyl's and Fukishimas.
You don't have to. You can take it per capita, and start it with dams built starting at the same time as nuclear power plants, and get the same results. Hydroelectric dams are much better than coal, but hardly optimal in terms of lethality or ecology. Even aside from human lives, they can be environmental disasters all on their own. However, once built, the damage is pretty much done, so we might as well take advantage of them.
If you replace thousands of coal plants around the word with nuclear power plants, you're going to see a lot more Fukishima's because more plants will be hit by once-in-a-thousand-years disasters just based on statistics.
Yes, you will, and the statistics bear out that this is a better result than continuing to see all the casualties from coal.
Which can be done for a fraction of the cost of nuclear power
Then do it. I'm certainly not stopping you. If you can wipe out nuclear in the free market, then you can just do so and we don't even really have to discuss it. It's not like nuclear power has entrenched backing that's going to sabotage your batteries or whatever.
I have a prediction. If you run the numbers, attempting to be perfectly honest in terms of cost and using only reasonable assumptions about future advancements, but excluding fossil fuels as having unacceptable externalities, then I predict your results will include some renewables and some nuclear. Go ahead and prove it wrong. Not going to stop you.
Some stats I found here: http://www.eia.gov/forecasts/a... show that land-based wind is fairly favourable *when the wind is blowing*, the others don't do so great (certainly not "a fraction of the cost" even when the wind is blowing), except geothermal which is a clear winner in those few cases where it is available. Hydro is in the same ballpark. Other sources: http://www.forbes.com/sites/ja..., http://www.renewable-energysou..., http://nucleargreen.blogspot.c.... Note some of those sources point out, correctly, that fossils are basically the cheapest. That's why we still have them (if they weren't fairly cheap, the problem would basically solve itself). Of course, fossils don't capture all downstream externalities in the way that nuclear and non-hydro renewables tend to.

Large Majority Believes Climate Change is Happen
A survey from 5 years ago found that a large majority of Americans (75%) believe in human caused warming of the atmosphere.
When respondents were asked if they thought that the earth’s temperature probably had been heating up over the last 100 years, 74 percent answered affirmatively. And 75 percent of respondents said that human behavior was substantially responsible for any warming that has occurred.
And
Fully 86 percent of our respondents said they wanted the federal government to limit the amount of air pollution that businesses emit, and 76 percent favored government limiting business’s emissions of greenhouse gases in particular.
However
Large majorities opposed taxes on electricity (78 percent) and gasoline (72 percent) to reduce consumption. But 84 percent favored the federal government offering tax breaks to encourage utilities to make more electricity from water, wind and solar power.
And huge majorities favored government requiring, or offering tax breaks to encourage, each of the following: manufacturing cars that use less gasoline (81 percent); manufacturing appliances that use less electricity (80 percent); and building homes and office buildings that require less energy to heat and cool (80 percent).
So Americans are in favor of tax incentives but are against tax increases to solve the problem. The debate needs to shift to dealing with solutions and promoting solutions now. The longer we wait the more the unpopular choices will be needed. We need to highlight to the politicians that the public is in favor of tax incentives and by opposing these measures they are in the minority and are less electable.

Re:makes no sense to me
But no, let's make this about women and how they are objectified.
It's a make-up call. It's use is on the upswing.

Re:Geographic redundancy
But again, it's VERY hard to believe that Jane/Lonny Eachus was just honestly fooled by that cult as long as he refuses to retract his Slayer claims. Don't you want to show that you have a shred of intellectual integrity by retracting your Slayer claims?
... I have nothing further to say to you about that which I have not already stated repeatedly, to you and to others, and I have no reason to repeat myself yet again. This assertion is completely baseless, and even if it were not, I don't owe you anything. So once again you are proven to be lying.
... [Jane Q. Public, 2015-09-10]Jane, you owe it to yourself to show that you have a shred of intellectual integrity by retracting your Slayer claims. And don't you think the accusations of lying you're hurling at NASA, CU, the NAS, et al. are undermined when you accuse someone of lying just for noting that you've spent years regurgitating Slayer claims? Aren't you worried that posterity will find out you were actually "repeating yourself" by continuing to double down on your Slayer nonsense even to the bitter end of this comment thread where you were repeatedly and politely asked to give your reply to that physics problem which you insisted you had?
... So once again: what is your purpose for posting these proven lies, unless it is to try to defame me or imply guilt by association? You still haven't answered that question. [Jane Q. Public, 2015-09-10]
It's so cute how Jane pretends I haven't answered that question. Once again: Jane, you spent years regurgitating Latour's nonsense and loudly insisting he was correct. Don't you remember repeatedly claiming to be happy to admit your mistakes? Once again, I gave you another opportunity to show that you have a shred of intellectual integrity by retracting your Slayer claims. And once again, you've declined...
Even if Jane/Lonny Eachus thinks his own intellectual integrity is a lost cause, he should at least pretend to show empathy towards others. If only to blend in. He should remember that khallow went Sky Dragon Slayer because of Jane's argument. Since Jane/Lonny later seemed to realize this argument violates "kindergarten-level physics", doesn't Jane have a responsibility to let khallow know that he went Sky Dragon Slayer over a bogus argument that Jane calls "an insult to an adult discussion"?
Otherwise, how does Jane/Lonny justify promoting this utter bullshit without consequences?
If Jane/Lonny Eachus really didn't know that he was wrong to claim that no Slayers have been convicted of sexual wrongdoing, then he could easily show that by retracting his claim. But he still hasn't done that, even though he's had months to find the necessary few seconds. Why not, Jane?
Because to the best of my knowledge (which YOU prompted me to look up, by the way), none of them have. That guy name Manuel you found (I have no idea how)

BZZZT WRONG! if you are going to call out someone for being wrong, at least get your own facts right.
miracle whip does indeed have eggs.
except for the spices the labels are pretty close.
miracle whip isn't mayonaisse because it doesn't have enough oil to meet the FDA's definition like the gp said. it is also tends to be sweeter.

Re:Photoshop
Gimp eventually did become decent feature-wise, but of course it can't replace Photoshop for people who want Photoshop. [..] For me, I never learned photoshop, I tried to, several times, but just couldn't do basic stuff. Gimp was very easy for me to learn, I use it only for very simple stuff [..]
I think that's the important point, and something that I found a few years ago when examining the usability of several free/open source software packages. Does GIMP have good or bad usability? There were some strong statements on either side: About half said it had good usability, and about half said it had bad usability. However, I decided to skip GIMP in my usability study, as it is intended for people who do need/want to do graphics work, and my usability test targeted the general user. But I didn't discuss the split opinions in the usability of GIMP.
In following up, it seemed that two types of users thought GIMP had poor usability:
- Those who used Photoshop a lot, such as professional graphics editors or photographers
- Those who never used Photoshop, and only tried GIMP because they needed a graphics program
Users who thought GIMP had good usability used Photoshop occasionally, such as hobbyist photographers or casual web designers. Digging further, I believe this is because:
- Those who only occasionally use Photoshop understand the concepts and terminology used in Photoshop and so are easily able to transfer their knowledge from Photoshop to GIMP.
- But those who never used Photoshop were completely lost in the terminology and concepts. GIMP relies on layers for image construction (so does Photoshop). "Layers" are a difficult concept for someone who has never worked with them before. A simple paint program like MS Paint usually suffices for these users.
- And those who use Photoshop all the time were confused that functionality and features differed slightly from Photoshop v GIMP, or was accessed differently, or used different terminology; these users were stymied by what they perceived as a dramatic change from Photoshop to GIMP.
So GIMP is an interesting case. It's an example of mimicking another program perhaps too well, but (necessarily) not perfectly. GIMP has good usability if you have used Photoshop occasionally, but not if you are an expert in Photoshop, and not if you are a complete Photoshop novice.
