Re:Noise or comfort?
Just for clarification, I'm speaking not of full on headphones, but these
https://www.bose.com/en_us/pro...I've had to put up with dogs barking and 20 something girls gabbing all night on a redeye when I'd forgotten to bring these along...wouldn't have been an issue for me with them.

Re: Apples and Persimmons

Ok, I take it back about the Bose Stores. I guess they DO have some, although I can't for the life of me imagine why, other than the fact that general-purpose "HiFi" stores are all but gone in the U.S. I have just never seen one.
Bose DOES look like they copied Apple's general "look" for their stores, though. -

"To be fair, they are a speaker company"
No. To be fair, there is no sense in reading the rest of your post. [...] I read the rest of your post anyway,
I should probably rest my case here, since you just stuck a fork in yourself. But...
and you go on to openly admit
Out now!
they make radios, for exampe
Well, they also make them for car companies. And sadly, they are not very good, but more to the point here, those radios are designed specifically and explicitly to go with matched sets of their speakers. I should say that they're not very bad, either. I'd rather have a factory Bose than a factory Blaupunkt, for example. Faint praise, however, only serves to illustrate the point.
so to be fair you don't even believe your own bullshit.
If you can point to something I wrote and explain why it is bullshit, then do that. But you haven't managed that. Bose is first and foremost a speaker company. Their fancy suspension system so far cannot be made practically light and their radios go with and are always sold with their speakers. You might say that they are a speaker-and-truck seat company, though. Fancy!

Re:Typical
To be fair, they are a speaker company, and they were started to be a speaker company. The fact that they do a bunch of other stuff doesn't really change that. I've had some of their speakers (601 Series II) and they just didn't sound good enough to justify the space they take up, although they actually could sound pretty good in a crappy room; up close they even sounded really crisp, whether they actually were or not. (The whole point was that they weren't, though.) You have got to be impressed by the way Bose can make a bunch of shitty drivers sound pretty decent for most kinds of music. Not impressed enough to buy them, but I got them for free. On that basis they were pretty fantastic.
My A8 also has Bose sound, and it doesn't exactly bowl me over either. Besides the crackling volume knob and the failed tape deck, it just doesn't really sound that amazing. When you get it nice and loud, it kind of goes to pieces. Since it's an extra-fancy Bose head unit (for 1997, mind you) and the changer uses a unique protocol, the only thing I can really replace it with is the same exact thing. There are kits to do otherwise, but then you really need to get into complete speaker wiring replacement.
Bose might do a lot more than this, and there might be a whole lot of solid engineering behind what they do, but pretty much everyone who doesn't know them for making undersized all-in-one systems with funky design (Bose "Wave", indeed, harrumph) knows them for making really expensive home speakers, or automotive audio systems which are often considerably expensive options which are (in terms of quality) inferior to getting the same sort of thing installed in the aftermarket.
tl;dr: Bose is a speaker company which refuses to publish typical test data even after they collect it, as well as a company which does other things — most of which are closely related to speakers.

Re:GimmickThe main job of the suspension system to make sure the tires stay in contact with the road. Because of the springs, the system will try to lean in turns. They actively work hard to reduce the amount of lean by using complex linkages, anti-roll bars etc. Looks like Mercedes is trying to allow for some amount of lean in turn by reducing the amount of anti-roll effort. In fact Mercedes is probably trying to reduce the weight and complexity of the suspension system.
Bose, of the high quality speakers fame, did lots of work in suspensions and leans.

Re:Best is two shifts with some recovery time betw
I tried out a pair of these the other day:
http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/headphones/noise_cancelling_headphones/quietcomfort_3/index.jsp
Even without music they seemed to be able to almost completely cancel out background noise (though, again, sadly not people talking a few feet away). I would have bought them if I could justify spending over $300 on a pair of headphones right now. It was like ear pillows. -

They cancel out human noise fine. I use them in noisy places and I can relax and focus. You are going to want to listen to some sort of music, just pick something easy to listen to like new age.

And then there is Bose & Greensound Technologi
New technology is available from companies such as Bose and Greensound Technologies. They are expensive, but do produce superior sound, from modern technologies derived from R&D. Sure, the bulk of equipment is low-cost and not superior, but cheap equipment has always been available. To claim that all stereos are inferior to a 30 year old systems is clearly an exaggeration.

Just tune to pretty much any Country / Western channel. That'll bring you down.

Re:Supercars
Been trying to reply to this all morning. First reply I was on the train and didn't get to finish it, 2nd time I navigated away and FF lost the text... 3rd time lucky?
Right... I am under no delusion that the Vibe (I know I said Matrix but it's the same car and more people know the Matrix) is anything other than a shopping appliance. It's not actually my car, it's my wife's. I actually drive her old car - a Corolla (haha). Yeah, just getting settled in a new country so it will take a few years to get back to having a normal, manual, car. I am actually in the planning phase of building a Lotus/Caterham 7 replica from scratch. That will be my fun car that I can actually *drive* in. I will be using a throttle cable (or maybe even a double one for redundancy like in my old race cars).
Thanks for all that assistance you mention, but no thanks. I will stick to doing the driving if you don't mind.
I don't want interference from the system in this manner for TC. There are better methods, like missing a cylinder etc. I drove a Ford Appliance a few weeks back in the UK and with the 'Extra Sensory Perception' on, sporty starts were horrendous. If the TC had a chance to kick in, it shut off the throttle, the revs dropped down to way below where the power lives and you slug up through the revs slowly. With ESP off, you can get away with a little bit of wheel slippage (A certain amount is OK, especially when pulling away while turning and you are OK with the inside wheel having a bit of slippage) and keep in the power, limiting slip by modulating torque to the wheels *yourself* with the accelerator and clutch. Leave it to me please as, frankly, I can do a better job of it than your 'ESP'.
I don't want interference from the system in this manner for downshifts. If I am in the mood for sporty downshifts, I am more than capable of blipping the throttle myself - that is if the throttle response is adequate. Not an issue in our auto Vibe, granted, so the throttle response doesn't actively get in my way. Interestingly, I did not notice a huge amount of throttle lag on the Ford Appliance, so the Vibe must be particularly bad (As an example, I can be on and off the throttle completely, *before* the engine even starts to rev... just... if I'm really quick...).
I don't want interference from the system in this manner for brake override. WTF. If I want to be able to help the back round with a little left foot braking, then that should be up to me, the driver. If I am so incapable at driving that I need a computer to stop me putting my foot on the brake by mistake, then I should probably not be driving.
However, I do see how cars are going with some of the semi-auto boxes in high end sports cars that need to rev match. They need to have electronic throttles to achieve this. I have yet to drive anything modern & 'sporty' but I can't imagine liking not having a clutch pedal for controlled launches, but the paddle gear changes (NOT manumatics!) do sound kind of sexy. Maybe when I do drive something decent, my opinion of electronic throttles will change. But my point is, why have them be so appallingly bad on 'appliance' cars? It doesn't hurt to have a little throttle response. I get the economy angle, but meh.. can you at least give me an option to drive this appliance how I like?
Before this intervention, you could drive any mass produced econobox car just how you liked, but now you are prevented from doing so. I just really hate how the *driving* is being taken out of driving more and more. It is not doing us any favours in the long run, of that I am sure. We will end up as a civilisation that kind of know how to vaguely point these lethal projectiles where they want to go and that is that.
Ahh i'll be happy when I get my 7 done, I guess
:)The Bose system uses linear electromagnetic motors.

Re:Supercars
Oh and on topic. Didn't Bose (yes, the speaker people) already do this before?

yes they did Though why anyone would want anything made by that overpriced junk company in their car is beyond me.

Re:Cel phone jammers!
I use a different technology to solve this problem on the commute. Noise canceling headphones.
I figure "since I'm the one with the problem with how you are talking, I will make my problem go away with a flick of the switch and some tunes." It reduces all kinds of noise problems, not just cell phones: train horns and bells, loud and boorish conversations, crying children.
If the offender is right next to me and overpowers even the headphones' ability to cancel their idiocy out, I can move. And I don't infringe upon anyone else's rights, since no one has the right to make me listen to what they have to say.
I highly recommend them to public transit commuters everywhere.

Re:Colonel Cathcart
Absolutely. When I want to cut out the noise I use my Bose Noise Cancelling headphones. I also like to relax with a soothing Ritalin 20mg, now available over the counter in your local pharmacy.

Re:Noise cacellation?
If you work in pro audio, then as the other posters have already shown, you aren't much of a pro. You would think if you were a pro, you'd know something really really really basic aspects of it. Like the speed of sound.
At sea level sound moves at 340.29 m / s. That's 1,116 feet.
In 10 ms, sound travels 11.16 feet.
In the 10 micro-seconds the grandparent correctly posted about, it would only move 0.1116 feet.
As others noted, unless you are wearing headphones so rediculouosly large they keep people 12 feet away from you, your 10ms response time won't work at all.
You're version of 'extremely low latency' is off by a few orders of magnitude from what this situation calls for. If you were a pro, you should know that.
As for "You would also need to place the microphone right up next to your head, which could be awkward.", Bose seems to have worked that out quite well already. But being a pro and all, I'm sure you arleady knew it wasn't awkward...
If you are really crappy in your field, shut up about it and don't try to brag. -
Re:Cables
Bose may be insanely priced, but at least they have products that are actually superior to the competition. The Bose Wave is stupidly expensive, but it does sound wonderful. My parents own one of those high-end Wave systems and it is a REALLY AWESOME system. You can put together a system that sounds as good for half the price, but it will be at least twice as big and much harder to setup. Monster cables offer no value whatsoever.

Re:My phone does this...
I have a Nokia 6010 and it interferes with my Bose noise-cancelling headphones. Now these are some expensive headphones ($300 SRP) and I honestly think that Mr. Bose ought to have had his people design a cord that would not pick up interference from cell phones for that price.
I also pick up interference from other people's cell phones and blackberry devices as well. While that interference is less than the kind I get from my Nokia in my shirt pocket with the headset cable nearby (or on top), I still hear it and it is an annoyance.
Should airlines allow cellular calling in the air, this may actually cause damage to the ears while on board long flights -- especially if one's seat is located near the cellular station on the aircraft.

Re:The iPod stuff is disappointing.
Well, let's look at the specs!
Apple iPod Hi-Fi (from Apple):
* Class D amp
* Two 180mm midrange drivers (acoustically suspended)
* One 130mm woofer (ported)
* Frequency response: 53Hz to 16kHz ± 3 dB
* Maximum peak sound pressure level: 108 dB at 1 m (AC); 102 dB at 1 m (DC)
Bose SoundDock (from Bose):
* 6.65" H x 11.91" W x 6.48" D 16.89 x 30.26 x 16.47 cm 4.56 lb (2.1 kg)
Can you show specs that demonstrate the Bose product to be superior? To anything? Can you even find specs for the SoundDock on Bose's site (beyond those shown here)? If so, trot 'em out, Bose-tool. -
Wonder how it compares to...
the Bose (http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_PRODUC
T _PAGE_EVENT&product=wr_wave_index) WaveRadio... For around $350 it looks like a better deal, since I can plugin the iPod into this too.. and get great sound... -

Noise cancelling headset
I've been using the Bose QuietComfort II for nearly two years now (I'm working in a noisy environment) mainly for its noise cancelling ability, and I'm very satisfied with it. Of course, it's expensive, but in my opinion, it was well worth the price.
-
"Lesser music players..." -- ???
Proving that iPod users are either scrupulously honest or more paranoid they'll get sued by RIAA than owners of lesser music players."
Sounds like flamebait to me. Calling every other music player "lesser." Yeah, no other music player holds up to an iPod.
In my opinion, I think there is some competition to consider before making that bold statement. -
Re:Not works of art, are they?
I agree. Most of the HTPC cases that I've seen haven't been works of art. However, that's because they are so generalist. The closest that I've seen to having a nice looking HTPC is the Bose Lifestyle systems. While these aren't strictly HTPCs... they techincally are... (just like an XBox360 is technically a PC). The drawback, of course, is that these suckers start at such a ridiculously high price (oh, and they aren't MythTV type boxes... but music playback type of boxes). Another good whole house audio solution is Sonos, but again... it costs a small fortune.
The big thing that bothers me about most HTPC cases? Their stupid brand name being on the front of them. Silverstone's seem to be the least obtrusive... but come-on. If I'm building one of these suckers... I want it to say my name or no name. -
Noise Canceling Headphones.
But what if the pirates have these: Bose QuietComfort 2 Headphones ??
-
Re:Sad
SED? Interesting. Can I get that in my next car with Bose suspension?
-
Use noise cancelling headphones
Headsets like the Böse QuietComfort 2 are very effective in cancelling the annoying background noise. They favor concentration, and you can also hear to music with quieter levels, which helps a lot not to lose your ears.
-
people use bose headphones
people use bose headphones to listen to 64K WMA. Better than yours I bet.

Re:not happy with apple
Are you sure you don't mean $300?

Re:predictionAnd when you add in things like the Bose suspension, I think it starts to sound plausible.
Take a car with electronic steering control, electronic braking control, electronic suspension control, and tie it all together with an adaptable vehicle stability program, and you can change the dynamics of the car competely by changing settings in the conrol software.

-
Oh no....
it might also be a new way to annoy your nighbor sitting next to you.
This is exactly where it is going to go. This is going to be horrible having to listen to calls like this: "Dude, dude, dude......guess where I am? Hehehe, dude, I am in a plane he he whoooooaaaa dude" your breaking up there.....CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW??? HOW ABOUT NOW????!!!?. Yeah thats exactly what I want. If the airlines want to make people even more crazy in the air they will subject us to stuff like that. Now, if they are smart, they will create cell phone free zones so that everybody does not have to be subjected to the mindless banter that people inflict on others around them.
It might even be a more horrible experience than I had on a flight from Sydney to Australia a couple of months ago with a couple of ecstasy addled passengers in front of me who were mixing alcohol with their e's as well. Those guys would not shut up. Cell phones have the same effect on some folks. They appear to be oblivious to anybody else around them and start the most inane loud conversations obligatorily involving anybody within earshot. All I have to say is that a good investment in Bose noise canceling headsets have been one of the best investments ever and appear to possibly become a necessity when flying.

Re:Headphones are an even better solution....
My machine is nearly as loud as an airplane, and I can hear it from the other end of my house. Personally I find it comforting, but headhones wouldn't solve the problem if I did want it to be a little quieter in here.
Yes, they would, if you bought the right ones.
