Re:Next step for GM....
No no, you're right, we're just six years away from real flying cars, so I guess 10 years away from foldable ones!

Awesome!
I had to look it up to be sure...

Re:2015?
2015? We'll all be too busy with our flying cars, fusion generators, dehydrated pizza, levitating skateboards, and holographic sharks to worry about what our phones do.

Re:Mr. Fusion?
In fact, (from BoingBoing):
BoingBoing reader Jesse Mazer says, "The guy who put up that Back to the Future DeLorean for auction is actually not the one who made it, and apparently he's using the creator's copyrighted photos of the car without permission, which previously resulted in a similar auction being taken down...also, according to the creator, he sold it to the guy because it had "a totally junked frame". The info is here.
Sorry for the repost... -
On the origin of the car being sold
Any prospective buyers who might be interested on the history of the car being sold:
Should check out the discussion on the car by the original creator
And the creator and his timeline on building the car
In short, its a re-sell and the original creator is getting no credit. In fact the person re-selling the car is using copyrighted images on ebay (which is why the auction was previously pulled). -

Great Scott!
"[T]o produce 500 megawatts of fusion power for 500 seconds or longer during each individual fusion experiment and in doing so demonstrate essential technologies for a commercial reactor"
500 megawatts? Wow, that's almost in the gigawatt range. If anybody's curious, I found a mockup of what the commercial product will look like. -
Re:Sounds like..
To make more sense, you might like to show them the rest of the bike

Sounds like..
Yes, I think it might be...

Time Traveller?
100+ in a residential neighborhood? What was this guy trying to do -- get his modded DeLorean up to 88 miles per hour?

Re:Hope it not like Back to the Future
It seems to me that they already have started replacing them. I bought the widescreen trilogy from amazon about a week ago and my copy just came today - it is the unfixed version, but I checked around the web looking for news of the fixed one.
In this story on a fan site Bob Gale talks about getting a copy of the new trilogy from Universal, just to make sure that he's happy with it before it gets released to the public. It seems like Universal has done a pretty good job dealing with the customers on this one - I'm waiting patiently for my free UPS envelope I will use to send the two affected DVDs back to Universal.
Anyways, I have a feeling that Amazon is selling the old versions because there is no way to check when purchasing them online. If you buy a copy and want to tell if it is a new version, check for a "V2" printed near the barcode on the back of the box, or look for a "V2" on either of the second two DVDs on the set. If you don't have "V2", call 1-888-703-0100 to get a new copy.

Puente Hills has a mall that was shown in BTTF...
FYI. The Twin Pines Mall (name replaced Puente Hills Mall), in the first movie of Back to the Future Trilogy, is located in this area.
You can see photographs and information here and here. -
Hello? Anybody home? Think, McFly! Think!
Lets look at it with the "Back To The Future analogy" (at her request I took my wife to go see Willard, starring Crispin Glover... who played George McFly in BttF) which goes something like this:
Biff = Saddam Hussien
Marty McFly = George W. Bush.
George McFly & other wimps = "rest of world"
Biff goes aound terrorizing (!) George, causing general havoc. George grows up cowing to Biff, and eventually goes to work for him. George grows old in fear of Biff. That is, until Marty goes back to 1955 and changes things.
Marty shows George that he can, and indeed must, stand up to Biff. At the end of the movie we see what a glass tiger Biff really is-- one punch from the underweight highschool loser George McFly knocks him cold.
Upon returning to "present day" 1985, Marty finds the world a very different place. His parents are no longer losers-- his dad cowering at biff and his mother an overweight chain smoker. Nope-- his parents in this alternate reality "grow up" to be vibrant, active and fearless. Biff, on the other hand, is given his come-uppance: he's outside waxing Marty's new truck!
The moral of the story: people never realize their true potential while cowering in the shadows of bullies. They must stand up to the bullies and defeat them in order to be all they can be. -
Re:Problem with Security ...
Well, Marty, we just need to go to the year 2015 and bring back a Mr. Fusion power unit.

Build Your Own DeLoreanFor all those case modders who are looking for something bigger to tinker with, why not build your own DeLorean? Chicks dig it, you can show it off around town easily, plus you've already got the modding experience needed to build a mock Flux Capacitor!
Persoanlly I'd go straight to the source and buy mine from the Delorean Motor Company. Of course, us poor college students can't afford anything more than Ramen noodles, so I'll stick with this.

Re:Ok, so let's figure this out.."Dvd's have been around for what, about 4 years? Anyone find the back to the future dvd yet?"
Why don't you do some research and find out? The reasons wht this movie have not been released yet (and the officially annouced DVD Region 1 release date) have been available for some time now. The non-appearance of this film on DVD so far is not an evil conspiracy.
FYI: There is currently a DVD BTTF available but it is a bootleg of the chinese laserdisc. The real product is coming.

Re:I think I'll wait for the box set...Universal did some stupid stuff with their European movie rights. Basically they don't make any money on those because of a deal with Columbia and they will wait with some blockbuster Spielberg releases until the deal is expired.
See also the Back To The Future DVD page. -
[OT] may the DVD be with youI hope this announcement is more accurate than the Back To The Future DVD announcement.
I'd think twice before getting too excited about a DVD release announcement.
Now that Star Wars will be released, any word on the LOTR DVD boxset yet?
;-) -
Mr Fusion anyone?
Ok, Ok, I know it's not using the same tech, but does this remind anyone else of the scene from Back to the Future when Doc picks through Marty's trash can to power his Delorean?

Re:Speaking of tv show DVD'sAs for releasing TV series on DVD, anyone know why networks haven't yet?
X-Files, Friends, Buffy, Star Trek Original Series, Farscape.. all out on DVD or being released as I type. (some of those only in region 2, others only in region 1, but that's the good thing about living in Europe: region-free or region-switchable DVD players)
I bet other shows will come as well, but that the networks want to wait and see how other titles are doing first. Hopefully Fox gives us The Simpsons and Paramount gives us DS9 before DVD hell freezes over.
:-)On the other hand.. don't ever trust a release announcement from distributors. Back To The Future should've been out in 1997 and it is still not.
I'm sure they all have very good reasons not to give us the goodies when we want them... right George Lucas?

Re: Don't Run Copper (Think: Lightening)
Couldn't one just have good quality surge protectors on both ends, ie APC, etc?
One of my friends is an airline pilot and a ham radio operator. Given his obscene pilot's salary, he has collected $250,000 or so worth of radio gear.
When he installed his 120-foot commercial grade tower, he looked into lightening protection. Did I mention that Florida is the lightening capitol of the world?
The local utility (Florida Power and Light) gave him the most detailed and helpful advice. Namely, unless you run your grounding rod to bedrock (which is what the local utility does with its poles), you can't even pretend that you could take a direct hit.
The $7.95, three-foot copper rods you get from radio shack do two things for you. First, they drain whatever charge you have in the structure so that it is electrically neutral. That means the structure is less likely to attract lightening. Second, they give you a false sense of security. The fact of the matter is, a three foot rod going into sand (as is the case here) or even good soil can't dissipate the energy from a direct lightening strike.
Same goes for your surge protector. Cheap ones will protect you to 500 or so volts. More expensive ones will protect you to ten times that. None will protect your computer from a direct lightening strike which we know from seeing Back to the Future carries 1.21 gigawatts of electricity.
So, to answer the question directly, no, good surge protectors won't save you. Neither will gas lightening traps though that's better than nothing, I guess. (I've never use them on ethernet.)
As I said before, wireless or fiber are the only real options if you want to directly link the two homes at high speed. If less speed is needed, VPN over DSL would be a good alternative. Just stay away from copper.

Re:Ugh, negativity on SlashdotGuess what people, Speilberg is a great director. You can say what you want about his movies, but he has an uncanny way of filming movies the way they need to be seen. Films like Jurassic Park, ET, and Back to the Future sold a lot of merchandise, yes, and were targeted at mainstream America.
Check your facts. Steven Spielberg didn't direct Back to the Future, Robert Zemeckis did. Back to the Future stands as a new film classic, for obvious reasons. Zemeckis' attention to detail made BTTF a super-smash.
Steven Spielberg was the Executive Producer of the film, and had little to do with the day-to-day filming of the movie.

Wrong answer, Biff
I thought he was talking about Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future in which case it IS Marty. Who's George?
