Re:Wait...
I understand that either you have an extreme lack of interest in the NFL, or this was an attempt at humor, or maybe you're butthurt over the protests (either for or against them), but at least attempt to be somewhat correct. Tens of millions of people. Hardly insignificant, especially considering companies are actually spending MORE money on advertising this year.

Re:It's the population increase
False. World population continues to grow.
Most of the world has reached fertility rates that will eventually, over the next several decades, populations will stop growing and begin to decrease. The population of Asia will stabilize and start to decrease around 2055. So for the Americas and Eurasia, and Oceania the problem is solved.
There is one remaining continent where this has not happened yet - the poorest and most underdeveloped continent which is Africa.
So things look grim for Africa, especially sub-Saharan Africa, at present. But the fact that fertility rates have not declined yet does not mean they won't - in fact there is solid reason to think it will start to decline in the next decade. African per capita GDP is growing rapidly (from a low base of course) in the range of 5-6% per year. Over the next few decades we should see a turn-around in Africa as it catches up economically. In much of the world where rates are below replacement now, they did not start to decline until the 1970s and 1980s.

Re:The bigger issue...
This is a popular argument parents make to squeeze more money out of others.
In the vast majority of America, schools are funded through property taxes, unless the community is poor, then the state will kick in some money (see Abbott Districts in NJ - the poorest communities collect so much aid they are among the highest-funded school districts in the state, and among the lowest performing), yet parents never petition for higher property taxes, they argue that unknown "others" need to pay more to educate their children.
Remember when Mark Zuckerberg gave Newark $100,000,000? Do you know where the money went? Not to fix crumbling buildings, not to put technology in the classrooms, not to hire more teachers? No, it went towards $1.000/day consultants and creating charter schools. The upside? It proved that charter schools, which operate with smaller budgets and less regulation perform better - parent in Newark are clamoring to get their children in the charter schools.
Sure, critics will argue that charter schools are only proven to have, on average, average results educating children - but communities like Newark are suffering with an entire public school system squarely performing below-average.

Re:Europe+Canada 3 Years ahead of US
This is indeed, as you say, "bullshit" because a light year is a measure of distance.
Which is why I put "light year" in quotes. I used the term from the parent post. I realize that it is a measure of distance, I assumed it was used figuratively as meaning a vast difference. I'm sure you knew that.
However, it is very accurate to say that European and Canadian healthcare is about 3 years ahead of healthcare in the US because the average life expectancy in Europe and Canada is about 82 years while it is only about 79 in the US (averaged over both genders).
I noticed that African nations ranked lower than average on that chart compared to the rest of the world, and European nations ranked average to above average. I see that the USA has a population of people from African descent of about 13%. Getting a good number for the percent of people in Europe of African descent is difficult, but my best guess is that it's about 2%. Similarly the percentage of those of European descent in Africa is quite small, also likely about 2%. Is it possible that this very small difference in lifespan between USA and Europe is due to genetics rather than the quality of the medical care?
Here's something interesting, a study showing that people of African descent in America live on the average 4 years less than those of European descent.
http://www.businessinsider.com...The authors of the article linked above seem to think that this is not genetic but merely a reflection of poverty and education. But it seems Americans are highly educated.
http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/...It also seems Americans make good wages.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...Perhaps it's genetic, perhaps poverty, perhaps education, or maybe it is in fact the healthcare in the different countries. There's other factors too, like climate, crime, diet, accidents, and more. Placing this rather small difference in expected lifespan on the different health care systems alone seems like a pretty big leap in logic. Perhaps a leap in logic the distance of a "light year"?

Re:I agree
Actually VOIP works pretty well
Find a VOIP provider, e.g.
https://www.powervoip.com/dash...
Buy $10 credit
Then install a VOIP app on your phone
E.g.
And you can call Taiwan to/from the US or UK for like $0.001-$0.003 per minute. So that $10 will last a long time. And you do it over WiFi so you don't get hit with data charges. MobileVOIP as a callback option if you don't have Wifi. Hell in the when I'm in the US I even used it for domestic calls because my $30 a month T Mobile Walmart Pay As You Go card only had 100 minutes of talk time bundled and I preferred to keep those for incoming calls. Which in the US, unlike anywhere else count in the world against your minutes allowance and start to cost money when that runs out.
So if you need to call people who don't have Skype/Hangouts/Facetime/Messenger/What'sApp/Line/etc you can do it pretty cheaply.

More asset than currency?
Maybe crypto currencies are to be seen as a hybrid between traditional financial assets (like stocks) and traditional money (like cash)?
Right now, the total market cap of the 1200 biggest cryptocurrencies are about 0,3% of the global stock market value. Traditional finance are starting to take notice. If value is moved from traditional stocks to cryptocurrencies - say to a 95%-5% ratio, that is a x16,6 increase which places Bitcoin at 166000$ assumed that Bitcoin stays at ~50% of the total cryptocurrency value.

Citations Re:No
Musk doesn't invent anything. He's a PR guy and he's very good at promoting himself and his companies. Martin Eberhard seemed to be the engineer behind Tesla, but Musk kicked him out in 2008 so he could take all the credit.
https://electrek.co/2015/05/16/teslas-original-team-where-are-they-now/
His Gigafactory batteries are actually made by Panasonic, with the Wikipedia article saying "Panasonic will lead the battery cell production portion of the manufacturing."

His "Hyperloop" is an idea that has been around for a long time, and he just gave it a stupid name.
Yep, been around over a century! In fact, Robert Goddard proposed a maglev inside a tunnel that would go from Boston to New York in 10 minutes, essentially identical to hyperloop... back in 1910. http://www.businessinsider.com...
I'll give him credit for PayPal. Only Musk could create such a scummy company as that.
Nope. That was Peter Thiel and Max Levchin, who started it originally under the name Fieldlink, later renamed Cofinity. They named their product PayPal, but didn't change the company name to Paypal until they merged with a different company that Musk founded.

Nike. (they weren't destroyed
... they reacted)Two decades ago, the company was under major fire for abusive labor practices after outsourcing labor overseas because it was cheaper.
The public was shocked by reports of Indonesian Nike workers earning as little as 14 cents an hour. Disturbing allegations of abuse included stories that a Vietnamese sub-contractor ran women outside until they collapsed for failing to wear regulation shoes.
Customers staged embarrassing public protests at the Olympics and at Nike stores. People began boycotting the brand in droves.
...By 1998, Nike had to lay off staff amid declining sales.

Re: Mr. Trump's 'Buy American, Hire American'
> So what? The original remark was is pretty much what the voters expect so disputing that necessarily refers to the popular vote as done by the voters.
So the uneducated voters think that the popular vote decides who is president?
Well, no, it's Mr. Trump who thinks something about the electoral college, back in 2012 when he mistakenly perceived that Obama had lost the popular vote yet won the electoral college. He made numerous vituperative denunciations on that.
Now of course, he suddenly can't say that, though he's still compelled to fabricate an unsupported fairy tale about illegal voters in order to justify his ego-base claims that he didn't lose the popular vote. He couldn't even accurately describe his victory, but ended up ignoring who outperformed him in the electoral college, and how even George W. Bush in 2004 got more voters in many states than he did.
And the liberals still want to call the Trump supporters uneducated? Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black!
No, I would call Mr. Trump's supporters a rusted crucible that is slowly disintegrating into even more useless scrap.

Re:Why is this so hard for /. to understand?
Why is this so hard for
/. to understand?Because too many people here subscribe to the reductive simplicity of brutalist libertarianism and can't deal with the complexity of the real world. Its kinda funny because the same crew would be the first to scoff at anyone who claimed that software engineering was a "mere matter of programming." But here they are ready to embrace social complexity as a mere function of biology, despite the fact that essentially no neurobiologists agree. Its just so seductive to believe that one's own homeruns are due to hitting the ball out of the park rather than being born on society's third base. Nobody wants to admit that maybe they didn't actually earn 100% of their successes.
I mean come on, Damore even cited a study that explicitly said his conclusions about biology were not supported by the study:
“They are differences of degree, with large overlaps between men and women. They are not fundamental qualitative differences, as often argued in the past in order to entirely exclude women from ‘male’ occupations such as management, the military and the professions.”
These people are just so desperate to avoid critical self-reflection that any fig-leaf will do, and damn do they get angry when you try to take that fig leaf away.

Re: Lets be honest
I'd love to see the original real citation for this welll known 'fact'.
There are many. Finding the original would be a pointless endeavor though.
I wonder if it includes things like the military, a federal expense, defending the liberal coasts, and pouring federal money into the navy and Air Force bases that do so.
Yes, those have been factored into many charts, though some concentrate on the "welfare" aspect.
That's free money for California, where I live btw.
Nope. Quite expensive actually. Military spending isn't funded by a magic fairy. The days of sending forth conquering armies to gather tribute are long gone.
Blue States are actually on the hook, especially for the Right-wing war-mongering. And frankly, the GOP would gladly close every base in California, they HATE the state enough to spite the country. It has become their Sodom and Gomorroh, and it's barely 30 years since Reagan, who they never mention as being governor of California or an actor.
I also expect that eliminating the state deduction will force out of control liberal states to lower their taxes and stop flushing money down the toilet and useless social programs that only grow every year but don't help the people they're supposed to much less have an end goal.
Except you are assuming they are "out of control" and "flushing money down the toilet" on "useless social programs" that "don't help the people" which is bad enough, yet your method is even more deeply flawed since instead of offering a better alternative, you are just randomly attacking your opposition under a false pretense of noble motives.
Eliminating the mortgage deduction should force housing prices to come down, too. I'm ok with that, also.
Except it won't happen, since you aren't even addressing the reason for high housing prices. Here's a hint: The financiers don't want housing prices to come down, they LOVE the escalation.
The tax system has artificially altered major parts of our economy into a twisted mutated wreck. Time to restore, rose rather than fight over who gets to fuck over whom in a giant game of musical taxation chairs.
You're blaming taxation. The true causes are far more sinister and nefarious. You're being exploited and oppressed, but you don't know who has the whip.
PS, Newt Gingrich claimed he fixed that bit about paying people not to work, rural poor people do vote for Republicans, and yes, big companies like Wal-Mart and McDonalds do instruct their employees to get on food-stamps and other programs.
Also, the pill-pushers are big pharma, who the GOP loves. Just like Big Tobacco.
Mysteriously, however, funding schools, health programs, and improving people's lives by fixing their homes is forbidden as it is offensive. Except for the private religious schools indoctrinating the next generation of Wor$hipers at the Church of Christ Money-lender. That is a goal worth billions.

Re: Not the issue
Sorry but no the "concept" isn't the same. One is about taking rights away (locking up an innocent US citizen), the other is simply not executing on something that isn't a right to begin with.
The concept of a presumption of innocence is the same in both. The concept of not putting undue burden on those you have little reason to suspect of criminal activity is the same. How we treat citizens vs non-citizens is simply a matter of law, but the concept is the same. More crimes are committed, including murder, because we have a very high burden of guilt in our country. Just as more open borders will increase crimes committed by immigrants. The question in both cases is what is the cost of lowering our presumption of innocence in either our justice system or immigration system.
Increased border vetting costs money, money which could be spent on more efficient law enforcement. Or on safety net programs which reduce the incentive for criminal activity. The cost of limiting immigration is very high, while the rate of terrorist activity among immigrants is very low. The single event of 9/11 accounts for 98.6% of all American deaths from foreign terrorists since 1975. Since 9/11, however, foreign-born terrorists have killed roughly one American per year. You are over 10x more likely to die from choking on food than from terrorists, so do you also advocate an all liquid diet?

Re: Cue the Nazi snowflakes
You've got it backwards there. The left and far left have pushed on regular people to the point where left-wing politicians and academia have told, implied, and shamed people in general not to take pride in their country, culture, and so on.
No, you have it backwards. The Right, and the Far Right, have pushed on regular people to the point where right-wing politicians demagoguery have told, implied, and shamed people in general not to criticize their country, culture, and so on, as anything less than fervent pride is wretched base calumny.
Patriotism has been corrupted by the most vilest act of all.
Of course, there are problems with the nature of pride, not to mention your own support for the suppression of Cornish, Jersey, Manx, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, and other identities.
Then went on blaming them that all the ills in the world are their fault and so on. The backlash is growing because the left created their own enemy.
Again, backwards, the right then went on stoking up the fires of outrage and hysteria, to get the mob of people chanting their denunciations en masse. It's easy to provoke, people are easily misled by the forces of anger and hatred. That way somebody ELSE is to blame.
Common psychology really, responsibility is hard to apply for yourself, easy to apply to others.
That ranges in everything from those 'minorities' getting preferential treatment in the judicial system, to those minorities given a free pass to rape young girls for decades(see rotherham in the UK and other cities there). And the police being 'afraid of being labeled racist' as the reason that they did nothing. Or turning around and charging the rape victim with a hate crime, while letting her attacker go free.
Yes, we know the British police aren't a hotbed of racism and bigotry, they don't cover up crimes, they don't blame the innocent, nope.
And I didn't even bring up their misconduct in Northern Ireland.
If you don't think this is the way that it happened, you only need to look at media.
If you don't realize how the right-wing is making things up, you need to look at them with a more critical eye.
With the various "cultural appropriation" garbage, or buildings being scrubbed of historical names because 'reasons' of whatever they might be.
Are you still upset that people keep telling you that your cuisine isn't genuinely authentic British, but a hodgepodge of varying intersecting influences?
Or are you upset that people no longer want to be associated with tobacconists? You never protested when things were being renamed as tributes to Thatcher. Curious that. Very curious.
Political correctness was the start of this, people put up with it for a long time. But even people who are browbeaten, because they can't do something for "fear of being labeled a racist" will eventually have enough.
LOL, the "politically correct" attitude among the right is why they're smashing Keurigs and threatening anybody who cancels commercial time on their preferred media outlets. Meanwhile, the actual people who are browbeaten, the exploited and abused, you don't care about, and won't even spend one word of thought for them.
It's always funny when the right-wing stalwarts complain about "PC" though, when they're the most demanding tha

Plutonium isn't waste. It's a valuable resource to prevent the spread of the Chinese Communist Party.
Now yer talking Hal.
Also DU is an important resource used to prevent the spread of the Iraqi Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, now mostly extinct.
How did those kooky sand neggers get US oil under their soil?
Still DAESH, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hezbollah and so on are still in operation - though in DAESH's case only barely so.
Yer right to kill those fucking towel heads, after you've killed all the iraqi christians on your side the 'slims won't have anyone opposing them, great work
You don't even need to convince them to buy it, you can just hose them down with it from a Gatling gun whether they want it or not. I'm sure they'll even helpfully start shit so the US doesn't have to.
Yeah you sure showed them so brave and honorable that you don't have to start shit to give em what they deserve.
Hell in a battle with the Iranians or Hezbollah the US could stay out and sell DU rounds to the Israelis or Saudis.
What better way to get them them to poison themselves which is so much cheaper than deploying landmines, and you can't remove DU from the soil like a landmine so it will spread all over the middle east. Such genius, you guys really gave those fucking towelheads everything they deserved Hal, women and children for generations (if they have any more generations). Great works, no wonder everyone loves you guys.
You should be proud.

As far as the DU goes, you could burn it in one of these

Re:Why companies should stay out of politics
US debt to GDP is already at over 100%
https://tradingeconomics.com/u...
It's forecast to stay there
https://tradingeconomics.com/u...
Now going from $19 Trillion and 100% of GDP to $51 Trillion and presumably over 200% of GDP doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
And that's from one policy. Most people think the forecast is hopelessly optimistic and if you're willing to add $32 trillion to the debt over one policy to buy votes, what's to stop you adding another one?
It's disastrous. And up until the last election most Democrats knew it. Hillary still does

In an interview published Wednesday, Ezra Klein of Vox asked Clinton, who defeated Sanders to become the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, what she thought of the independent Vermont senator's Medicare-for-all plan, which he is set to release later Wednesday.
"Well, I don't know what the particulars are," Clinton said. "As you might remember, during the campaign he introduced a single-payer bill every year he was in Congress - and when somebody finally read it, he couldn't explain it and couldn't really tell people how much it was going to cost."
Clinton also highlighted what she saw as potential flaws in selling such a plan: special interests and public sentiment.
"When I was working on healthcare back in in '93 and '94, I said if we could've waved the magic wand and started all over, maybe we would start with something resembling single-payer plus other payers, like other countries that have universal coverage and are much better at controlling costs than we do, primarily in Europe," Clinton said. "But we were facing the reality of not just strong, powerful forces but people's own fears as well as their appreciation for what they already had."
As an example, Clinton cited the difficulties with the attempt at single-payer in Sanders' home state of Vermont, saying it was "difficult to out the pieces together."

I bet the Democrats end up supporting it though and wheeling out Jimmy Kimmel to cry that anyone who opposes it wants kids like his to die.

Diaspora to the countryside
Once workers could communicate with their colleagues through instant messages and video chat, he reasoned, there would be little coherent purpose to trudge long distances to work side by side in centrally located office spaces.
We only need two things before most white collar people leave the crowded and expensive cities and move to the countryside:
1. The will. The bosses have to allow it. With each passing day more and more people are moving up who don't remember a world without internet and instant communication.
2. Fast rural internet. Wireless (i.e. 5G) is probably how this will happen and Spacex will no doubt play a major role. If not Spacex then some other company will probably do it. -
Journalistic standards have plumeted.
Interference in the past didn't usually make it far: there were editors and fact checkers and journalists who had integrity.
Today, getting the story out there as fast as possible is the goal - regardless of its validity.
Coupled with a public who prefers infotainment, Russia has an easy time.
And we have "news" organizations that do nothing but misinform.
Right now, I see too many folks all worked up over some football players kneeling during the national anthem; while the Republicans are going to put forth a tax plan that's gonna probably screw over the very same folks who really care about who kneels during the national anthem.
DISTRACTION ISSUES
No sir, our biggest enemy as regards to fake news is domestically produced.
And then there are the pundits - like Trump's buddy Hannity - who just lie; make shit up and stupid people believe them!

Nonsense article with a click-bait title
"You cannot give a mathematical proof of something in the physical world. At most, you can give a mathematical proof that something is true in some model of the physical world."
Thanks for saying that. This Slashdot story is about a nonsense article with a click-bait title.
Any theoretical model of biochemical aging must include all facts that have already been gathered, such as these:
Longest-living animal species
400-year-old Greenland shark 'longest-living vertebrate'
Longest-living mammal: Bowhead whale. Quote: "... over 200 years."
