Re:Soviet Union 2.0
I am *not* dead wrong. Russia has a terrible position. They're no Soviet Union. They're surrounded, where are they going to go?
Uhh, Crimea, for a start? They have Syria, too.
The US won't allow anything to happen to its captive vassal states in Europe.
I think the people of Ukraine would disagree with you on that.
The European Union is already strong enough to defend against Russia
So far, they've been strong enough to impose some sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine and the taking of Crimea. But it's kinda over... nobody believes Russia is going to just pack up and leave. Re-draw the maps: Crimea is now part of the Russian Federation.
Don't fall for the old "blame the dirty foreigners" line, it's the oldest trick in the book.
Unless the dirty foreigners are actually playing dirty. They play dirty in Ukraine, they play dirty in Syria. They play dirty on the high seas. They have vast oil wealth, hold real estate interests worldwide, and maintain the largest nuclear stockpile in the world, which Putin said (over dinner) could destroy America in a half-hour or less.
And then there's that whole internet hacking thing. If the shoe fits, wear it.

The Russian Four-Step
First, see what kind of social and economic mischief you can carry out in the West by way of "anonymous" activity on the Internet - do it cheap, like get kids to help out, and take note how hard it is to trace back to the culprit.
(in parallel, see how much actual damage can be carried out, using Ukraine as a guinea-pig).
Next, notice well it all worked, beyond all reasonable expectations, even to the extent of swaying elections of public officials in the U.S. (they're holding Congressional hearings about us!), and encouraging open revolt against the state and inflaming street unrest.
Third, in view of the fact that Russian officials do not tolerate street unrest and open revolt against the state, conclude that this "research experiment" has proven without question that the Internet is a danger to the Motherland and its beloved leader, Valdimir Putin.
Fourth and finally, take pre-emptive action based on this valuable research to crush this threat and make sure it don't never happen here (Russian military take note... could be useful someday; continue research).
P.S.: President Xi says to Putin in his heavy Chinese accent, "way ahead of you."
P.P.S.: Kim Jong-un says it was all my idea. -

List of add-ons I use. All but 4 listed as Legacy.Add-ons marked as Legacy: All but CanvasBlocker, Ghostery, Nuke Anything, and uBlock Origin in the list below. Wow! NoScript is marked as legacy!

For security: Get add-ons only from Mozilla.org web pages.
Pale moon add-ons
List:- Adblock Latitude For Pale Moon browser only. Blocks display of ads. "Adblock Latitude is a direct fork of Adblock Plus made specifically for the Pale Moon browser."
- BetterPrivacy Deletes Local Shared Objects, LSOs. LSOs are files placed on your computer by the Adobe Systems Flash plug-in. Use of Adobe Flash allows web sites to track you, permanently even though your browser is configured to delete the files known as "Cookies" after each re-starting of your operating system.
- CanvasBiocker Prevents websites from using the Javascript <canvas> API to fingerprint them.

It seems to me: Google is becoming more abusive.
It seems to me that Google is becoming more and more abusive.
When I go to web pages, often the NoScript and Ghostery add-ons list one or more Google processes. Google is following web site visitors everywhere.
Google allows cell phone providers to prevent updates to its Android operating system. That forces people who need security to buy new cell phones.
In general, it seems to me that hardware and software providers are becoming more and more authoritarian. They take advantage of the fact that most people don't know much about technology.
In my opinion, Microsoft's Windows 10 is NOT USABLE! How can you deliver a computer to a customer when you know what you are delivering is spyware? One article: Windows 10 is possibly the worst spyware ever made. Quote from that story: "Buried in the service agreement is permission to poke through everything on your PC." A previous comment about Microsoft: Window 10 Spyware.
Technology companies are not only abusive in their design of products, they are abusive in other ways, also:
Microsoft: Microsoft Is Filled With Abusive Managers And Overworked Employees, Says Tell-All Book.
Apple: Cupertino Mayor Says Apple 'Abuses Us'
Apple again: Criticism of Apple Inc.
Adobe Systems: Adobe Flash, The Spy in Your Computer -- Part 1 Adobe seems to me to be one of the original abusers. The company demonstrated to others that average people don't know how to protect themselves from technology abuse.

Target and teen pregnancy
my wife and i are done having kids.
Unless both of you are way above 70 years old and you not only had a vasectomy, but even got your balls removed,
I wouldn't trust 100% this.Talking with my friends about their upcoming baby and boom next thing i know im getting pampers ads and investing in my childs education ads againsl all of sudden.
Given precedent at Target, It would be now a good idea to make a pregnancy test.
At that this at Target is rather old story. At a time where statistics was the best you could do. Since then we've moved past machine learning and into the real or deep neural nets. You can only guess what Facebook is able to infere and deduce about you..

But only because it's a Sunni robot and not a Shi'ite one.
TFA doesn't say. In fact, it only mentions Saudi Arabia in the first half of the first sentence, and then abruptly veers into a shameless promotion of "Uptake" with plenty of vacuous statements by its CEO, and never mentions Saudi Arabia again.
Here is a link with some actual information. Here is another.
The robot's name is Sophia. Since she is female, presumably she won't be allowed to drive. But she is pictured without a veil.

Re:The Year of the Linux Desktop
Chromebooks have outsold Windows laptops on Amazon for years and years now.
Could you cite a source for those numbers? I searched but didn't find anything that shows Chromebooks anywhere close to matching Windows laptops. I did find a claim on ZDNet that said Chromebooks had surpassed Windows laptop sales but I ignored it because the accompanying chart showed the latter dominating the market. Business Insider compares sales for 2014-2016.

Re:Boring
Tesla is circling the train? Oh...yeah...ok. Let me buy that tesla stock from you then since it's practically worthless anyhow. Take $10 a share?
The only argument I hear to Tesla being successful is its stock price. People said that about Enron, Valeant Pharmaceuticals, and many dot.com stocks back in 2000.
Model 3 shipment numbers are about one month behind targets.
http://www.businessinsider.com... "The company plans to produce 1,500 Model 3 sedans in September and grow that to 20,000 vehicles a month by December." A total of 220 have been delivered. All have been returned to the factory for replacement parts because the car is still being developed and tested! There won't be 1500 total deliveries by September, much less in September alone, and there sure won't be 20K by December.

House is also Investigating Uranium One Deal
http://www.businessinsider.com/devin-nunes-clintons-probe-us-russia-uranium-deal-2017-10
The New York Times reported in 2015 that "as the Russians gradually assumed control of Uranium One in three separate transactions from 2009 to 2013, Canadian records show, a flow of cash made its way to the Clinton Foundation." The Times' reporting built off of "Clinton Cash," a book by the conservative author Peter Schweizer that the Clintons dismissed as partisan conspiracy-mongering.
The Hill's report largely echoed those claims, alleging that Russian officials tried to "ingratiate themselves with the Clintons" by transferring "millions of dollars from Russia's nuclear industry to an American entity that had provided assistance to Bill Clinton's foundation."
The Hill further alleged that the FBI had found evidence that the Russian official who oversaw Russian President Vladimir Putin's "nuclear expansion inside the US" had been engaging in bribery and extortion.

Re:Strange days indeed....
WAKE UP! North Korea has been festering for a long time and it's not only the United States that is concerned about Kim Jong Un's nuclear armaments and hostile disposition.
You'd be hostile too, if a foreign government invaded your land, killed 1-3 million of your citizens, while flattening every city in the north, and has spent over 20 years practicing invasions every spring.

Amazon and Microsoft make Seattle MISERABLE.
Amazon and Microsoft contribute to making Seattle a MISERABLE place to live. The world, not just Seattle, needs better city management. (Posting this again, with improvements.)
Amazon: Worse than Wal-Mart: Amazon's sick brutality and secret history of ruthlessly intimidating workers (February 23, 2014)
Amazon: Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace (August 15, 2015) Quote: "The company is conducting an experiment in how far it can push white-collar workers..."
Amazon: Amazon Under Fire Over Alleged Worker Abuse in Germany (February 19, 2013)
Microsoft: Microsoft Is Filled With Abusive Managers And Overworked Employees, Says Tell-All Book (May 23, 2012) The Microsoft headquarters is in Redmond, part of the Seattle metropolitan area.
Seattle: Together with Amazon, Microsoft, and inadequate city management, Seattle is an extremely miserable place:
Traffic: Seattle one of the worst U.S. cities for traffic congestion, tied with NYC (March 31, 2015) Quote: "An additional 23 minutes a day spent in traffic may not sound like much, but when it adds up over a year it becomes 89 hours." (Whoever wrote that must be accustomed to Seattle misery. An additional 23 minutes a day spent in traffic sounds HORRIBLE.)
Slow internet: Many areas of Seattle have poor internet connections. See the article, These places have the slowest Internet in the country. (June 25, 2015) Quote: "... Seattle ... CenturyLink (CTL) customers trying to access particular sites from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. will have unbearably slow speeds."
Important questions for city managers and residents of Amazon's new city: 1) Do you want to invite a company to your city that has a history of abusiveness? 2) Could the managers of Amazon's new city manage Amazon's growth, or would it be almost completely out of their control? -

Re:This was the plan ...
Probably depends upon how you categorize the "drone industry". This group says it's only going to be about $12B in 2021. That's a drop in the bucket compared to tobacco (about $770B) or guns (about $51B). Now, if you're going to include things like Predator and Global Hawk UAVs, that's a different story, and IMO hardly comparable to "drones".
-
Insurance
Insurance translates risk into dollars into quarterly financials.
- Investors who don't understand computer security can ask what's being done to mitigate risk ("You have fire insurance, why not cybersecurity insurance?")
- The CEO/CFO/board sees that if they buy insurance, they can better risk-manage cybersecurity breakins, and can provide an answer to the institutional investors.
- The insurance actuaries can insist on audits to make sure the software/server/network infrastructure is secured well enough to be insurable.
- The rank-and-file IT get stuck with implementing it, and employees get stuck suffering with increased security.
Moral of the story: start training for a job as an actuary.

Re:The Deathbed Vigil
Yet the Mac survived despite similarly being a proprietary design, it wasn't until Windows 95 came out that the Mac became technically inferior -- MacOS 8 and Windows 3.1 were pretty comparable technically, but Windows 95 had real multitasking and while it crashed a lot, so did MacOS 8.
I'd "well-but" this, but I honestly have no clue how Apple managed to survive. They almost didn't, of course. At one point Microsoft actually stepped in and saved them. The theory was Microsoft was worried they'd lose their anti-trust suit with the US government if they didn't have the fig-leaf of competition from Apple to hide behind. So they'd probably be history like Atari and Commodore if they hadn't happened to be the last one standing.

Niobium - another rare earth
I googled niobium rarity and...
http://www.businessinsider.com...
Due to its relevance in aerospace and defense, Niobium is considered a “strategic metal” by the U.S. government, meaning there are few or no substitutes for the metal’s essential use. Furthermore, of all strategic metals, Niobium is regarded as one of the most highly critical. But its supplies are considered potentially at risk. This is because only a few sources throughout the world produce the metal. Almost 90% of the world supply comes from Brazil. Nearly all of that comes from only one mine. Most of the rest comes from the Canadian Niobec Mine, owned by IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG). -
Competing in abusiveness?
It seems to me that companies have discovered that most people don't have much knowledge of technology, and are easily manipulated. So now it seems to me that companies are competing to see who can be most abusive. A few of the many examples:
Microsoft: Window 10 Spyware
Microsoft: Microsoft Is Filled With Abusive Managers And Overworked Employees, Says Tell-All Book.
Apple: Cupertino Mayor Says Apple 'Abuses Us'
Apple again: Criticism of Apple Inc.
Adobe Systemes: Adobe Flash, The Spy in Your Computer â" Part 1 Adobe seems to me to be one of the original abusers. The company demonstrated to others that average people cannot protect themselves from technology abuse.
Adobe Systems rents software: Software as a Monthly Rental -

The main motivation for Chinese to want to go abroad is to escape the hot smoggy climate, and move somewhere cool and green. They love the UK for this reason. When they can't see the skies for the pollution, the government has no option to act. Just do an image search for pollution in China. Those pictures look like something out of a dystopian futureworld.

Re:The real problem is
analyzing and publishing public information is not an invasion of privacy, even when done on a massive detailed scale using new technology.
That will be real reassuring to the victim who gets beaten up, crippled, or killed do to Facebook breaching their privacy. Once there are enough incidents, people might start taking it out on Facebook employees but I guess that is not Facebook's problem.
Remember this incident?

Re:One of the reasons
There's "insane taxes" on all packages, though. There's a sports tax, a religions tax, a soap opera tax, etc.
If you asked me to list examples of problems facing the world today, and I responded with "child slavery, having to wait for elevators, and people who snuffle instead of blowing their noses" as my list, you'd probably look at me funny, since that first one is in a league of its own compared to the others. Right?
Likewise, ESPN's sports tax is not like those other taxes you listed. Not even close. Back in 2013, ESPN collected affiliate fees that averaged to $5.13/mo. for each cable subscription, meaning that any American with a cable subscription in 2013 was paying $5.13/mo. for ESPN, regardless of whether they were part of the then-1/3 of Americans who watched it. Today? Despite losing over 12M viewers, ESPN collects over $9/mo. per subscriber for its channels. Again, that's regardless of whether the subscribers watch it or not, and that number is still going up because ESPN is still the single biggest thing keeping viewers from cutting the cord. For comparison, AMC (i.e. a channel with several big name shows) barely pulled in 1/10 the affiliate fees of ESPN back in 2013, and even less today.
When low-cost TV packages get at $10 per month with no other fees, then they'll be competitive with Netflix and others.
I agree that they need to cut fees in general to get to that point, but if just one of those fees accounts for over 90% of your proposed monthly subscription, don't you think it's worth specifically calling that one out for hindering providers from offering competitive packages? In fact, wouldn't you agree that it's a waste to even bother mentioning channels that only cost a few cents each month in the same breath with ESPN?

That's not all!
More licensing!! The new license will say, on the 455th page of fine print, in complicated legal language, that Microsoft executives can go into your refrigerator any time they want, and eat your ice cream.
Why do they want to do that? They like the feeling of dominance.
There has been progress in dominance in other areas:
Spyware:
Windows 10 is possibly the worst spyware ever made
Quote: "Buried in the service agreement is permission to poke through everything on your PC."
Malware:
Microsoft is using 'malware tactics' to trick people into upgrading to Windows 10 -

Microsoft abuse. Why top managers from India?
Microsoft's history is filled with abuse:
One fact about Microsoft under Satya Nadella gives a useful overall view. Windows 10 is possibly the worst spyware ever made. Quote: "Buried in the service agreement is permission to poke through everything on your PC." Nadella has been CEO of Microsoft since 2014.
The management of Microsoft by Satya Nadella seems, to me and many others, UTTERLY incompetent: CNET Editor Rails Against Non-Consensual Windows Updates.
Possibly Satya Nadella was chosen as CEO of Microsoft partly because he was the least socially annoying manager.
Microsoft has a long history of being abusive to everyone, not just customers. Microsoft Is Filled With Abusive Managers And Overworked Employees, Says Tell-All Book.
Ballmer was worse?
Satya Nadella is apparently not as destructive as Steve Ballmer. Ballmer was rated the worst CEO in the United States.
Quote from an article in Forbes Magazine about Steve Ballmer: "Without a doubt, Mr. Ballmer is the worst CEO of a large publicly traded American company today." Another quote: "The reach of his bad leadership has extended far beyond Microsoft when it comes to destroying shareholder value -- and jobs." (May 12, 2012)
Bill Gates still manages Microsoft:
See the Jan. 27, 2017 Charlie Rose TV interview, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Quoting from the transcript:
08:40 Charlie Rose: How much time do you spend at Microsoft?
08:42 Bill Gates: I'm there about 15 percent of the time. And I get to work just on the R and D part.
Part of "R and D" at Microsoft is Windows 10 putting ads on screens while people are in their offices trying to work. The Microsoft managers who participated in that are amazingly lacking in social ability, in my opinion.
Microsoft's primary location, Seattle, is a miserable place:
Google is also badly managed.
To me, the management of Google seems less and less competent. Wikipedia says Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google was given that position in October 24, 2015. The reorganization of Google into Alphabet was completed on October 2, -
Re:Guess they are not big into the whole news thin
Beat me to it. Looks like it's going to be done well ahead of schedule. But hey, facts havenever stopped anyone before when trying to find reasons to bash Musk.
Facts like the fact that Musk never said he had approval from New York City - that he actually said, "verbal govt approval". Which he did - the government he was speaking of was the federal government (DOT, asked about it: "We have had promising conversations to date, are committed to transformative infrastructure projects, and believe our greatest solutions have often come from the ingenuity and drive of the private sector,""). But hey, let's leave that part out and pretend that Musk was just making things up.
Facts like, for example, that Model 3's production schedule had been moved forward to July (was originally supposed to start at the end of this year), with Musk stating at the time that the reason for the July deadline was because he knew some suppliers would inevitably fail to meet their deadline and he had to have a way to hold their feet to the fire with real penalties for failing to deliver. Of course, they actually did make the July deadline.
The Wall Street Journal will gripe about the fact that there are missing features in the (over-the-air-upgraded) software stack and that there's some manual labour / part changes in manufacture because automated assembly line isn't yet complete. Really, WSJ? Gee we all thought that the line was fully ready to produce tens of thousands of vehicles per month, but the schedule was only to produce a couple hundred for giggles. And of course, every Tesla short will whine about how there are customers acting as "beta", ignoring the fact that none of the above comes as any surprise to anyone with a deposit, particularly the earliest ones, and that they're thrilled to have the chance to get their vehicles early. I know one who, after having the car for just two weeks, already put down a deposit on a second one.
But hey, I guess someone has to try to recoup some of their losses in their ill-advised short position in TSLA.

Re:... and at least 6 years of right-wing politics
In the not-too-distant past the dominant voice on this site took a hard right turn
You know, it just don't see it that way.
The way I remember it, there were *always* people of all political stripes here. If anyone is really over-represented, its Libertarians, who will sound like right-wingers when a Democrat is in office and like left-wingers when a Republican is in office. I'm not Libertarian, but I've never really minded whatever today's slant is, because well-reasoned arguments will get voted up, and worst-case I get to see what other people with different political beliefs than mine consider a persuasive argument.
When I had trouble was the final stages of the 2016 election. All appearances were that the comment/moderation system here got pwned by Russian trolls, with the result that the stuff that got upvoted bore no relationship whatsoever to the quality of the thoughts. It made the website completely unusable for me. First major election since 2000 where I couldn't rely on
./ to get valuable insight into both sides of the issues. Damn shame, that. The other issue
/. tends to have is with any problem that doesn't particularly afflict its userbase (for the most part, technically proficient young white males). There's nothing wrong with not having any experience with what life is like when you're outside that demographic, but there's a lot wrong with not deferring at least a little to the expertise of those that do. -
Re: Slashdot Died when CmdrTaco Left
It works OK when its not under any kind of serious organized attack. During the 2016 election organized groups of Russian accounts (likely paid, if the various people who have investigated this can be believed) completely pwned the
/. moderation system.OTOH, if you WANTED to read a lot Russian-flavored pro-Trump messages all saying the same things, Slashdot during the last quarter of 2016 was the place to hang out.
