Re:Seriously
A lot of people really prefer donating money to buying CDs, even if the project has a lot of value to them. I hear this a lot about OpenBSD, where a lot of supporters will make an FTP download and donate $50 rather than buy the CD simply because it's more convient for them.
At any rate, I don't see how this would help. Presumably they aren't going to stop letting you download it for free. In that case, buying a copy is really not very different to just downloading it and donating some money - which is really all they're asking for now.
Of course, there are a lot of places that do sell NetBSD CDs for those without the bandwidth to just get it themselves, and I would suppose those places contribute some of the profits to the project. There's also the NetBSD store (although unfortunately the stuff there just isn't that flash) -

CafePress / Lulu
I needed a manual printed (perfect bound - like a paperback novel) last year and went with CafePress. They have reasonable prices--I think I spent $15 on a 200-page book, one copy. Decent quality, but the pages were a little yellow.
Then I found Lulu. Same kind of thing, with a base price of $4.53 per book and $0.02 per page. They do have a page limit of 700 pgs, which would translate into a whopping $18.53. Anyone have any experience with them?

An observation...
On boxers:
1. If there was a woman planning to remove one's boxers quivering in anticipation, that'll pretty much end in the planning phase once she sees those.
2. They should have put the flag over the fly, so purchaser could at least believe that the prostitute's laughter was related to the logo placement. -
Re:Increase quality and compete...
Okay, every Wikipedian on
/. is going to reply to this one (and it's definitely +5, Interesting, which is why it needs a good response), so lemme give it a shot:
1. Moderation is tricky like hell. Slashdot has one of the best moderating systems out there, and you see how many mods-on-crack you still see. It might still work out, and it might be a good idea to try it out. Atleast part of the appeal of Wikipedia (atleast for me) is that I can go into the present article on, say, QBASIC, delete every single word that's been written on the subject, and start over. Of course, if my new version sucks, somebody will revert it back to their version. If its better, it stays. That kind of flexibility comes at a cost, and it's something we at Wikipedia patrol vigorously. But I think that is extremely cool. There have been attempts made to create a moderated encyclopedia. I think that would just take the fun out of Wikipedia very quickly.
2. Business has always been a tricky issue at Wikipedia - pretty famously, the Spanish Wikipedia forked into the Encyclopedia Libre because of worries that advertising might go up on Wikipedia. Even now, a lot of people are worried about whether advertising would affect the way we work. Right now, the status quo seems to be raising money for equipment from donation drives and merchandising.
3. It's been done. -

Here's my uninformed opinion.
The recording industry ARE a bunch of greedy bastards that are just in it for the money, so any place they can squeeze out a few more bucks, they'll do it. And they know the power of Intellectual Property © ® and all the fists full of money that can generate, so they do everything they can to extend and expand copyright, so they can retain monopoly rights on something they paid someone to create but somehow they own.
But the real question is how can you make it. Well, to make it on-line as a musician, this is what I would do:
- Make sure your website has features to keep and gain fan attention. Make sure you have available media such as:
- MP3s, WMAs, OGGs, and AACs of your music in lower but still acceptable quality. I'd say 56k-96kbit, so casual listeners can listen but true fans would want to purchase high quality (192-512k) copies and lossless copies. Doesn't even have to be all your music. Imagine it like singles played on the radio. You can even have a tip section for each song so they can donate if they feel like it. And since you're distributing these files, you could have an introduction where you thank them for listening and direct them to your website, and put meta-data tags (ID3 tags and OGG comments, and I'm sure WMA and AAC have similar info blocks) on the files so it shows your information in iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player, XMMS, and so on.
- Maybe setup a Shoutcast, or IceCast channel. "All $MYBAND! All the time!"
- Videos of the band. Again, low quality, Windows Media, Quicktime, screw Real Player. Make them stream-only for free and offer to sell downloads of higher quality copies.
- Sell swag from your website. Audio CDs, DVDs of shows you've played, music videos if you're inclined to make them; T-shirts, hoodies, baby-doll shirts and all that crap that Cafepress will make for you. Turn album covers into desktop wallpapers, and have band photos for download. Make cell phone themes and ring-tones, sell those for $0.99 or even $0.50. Find a local starving-artist to help with the media if you want.
- If you've got the time and energy, have a band blog, podcast, or even for have those for individual band members.
- Promote your site with other artists and promote them on yours if you like them or if you think your fans would like them. A couple of banner ads on your site (provided that they're not obnoxious) in return for a couple banner ads on someone else's site.
- Get signed with whoever you can, but make sure you retain copyrights and possibly distribution rights. Get your music on iTMS if you can. Look into on-line record companies/distributors like Magnatune or MP3 Tunes as long as they won't interfere with you hosting your music on your own if you want.
Make it easy for interested fans to find you, refer you to their friends, buy stuff from you. Make your website easy to find and accessible. If you're not so good with visual media or website design, you probably know of a geek or a family member who is good at that, you could have them make a site for you (Payment would be between you and them). Once you're big enough, see if you can setup some tour dates. Sell CDs there, give out business cards with your website URL on them. Give away CDs with a few singles on them. You can even have an introduction on the CDs and DVDs and direct them back to your website, especially on any CDs you give away. Put a data track on audio CDs and DVDs that has some promo material or music files for your band and a link to your website. Remember everything can be used to promote yourself/your band, so make sure you've got it there where you can. But don't be obnoxious about it. People understand self-promo
- Make sure your website has features to keep and gain fan attention. Make sure you have available media such as:

Re:As a member of one of those "hatred" communitie
Personally, I don't believe in God. I don't believe in hell and I think Jesus was a clever, manipulative man but a man non-the-less. If that makes me a sinner in your eyes then so be it - I'll gladly live in sin because your alternative looks such much worse.
This is just sad. Could you tell me your address so I could send you this postcard? You seem like a perfect recipient for that card, my dear Athiest friend. -
Long answer
Let my clarify the short answer from my first post. I think that thanks to technology, the album is better than ever. Today you can buy a cheap computer for professional music mastering, and publish your album even if only three people in the world will buy it (or even publish hundreds of albums, with a new album every two days, or... you get the idea). Is the vinyl dead? Of course not. CD is not going anywhere either.
(Sidenote: why on Earth has Slashcode started to change dashes to double hyphens?) -
Panic Profiteering
Ok, since it is on topic and I feel compelled to embarrass myself...
I spent some time in December when the asteroid hype began and designed a graphic. I hoped to cash in on the end of the Earth hysteria; however, within four hours of setting up the CafePress shop, scientists discovered old observations, recomputed the trajectory, and confirmed the miss - all but ending my dreams of tongue in cheek panic-profiteering.
So I present to you the design that might have been.
Enjoy

What this really needs is a download button so I can download the composite quilt and use it as a desktop or something :D

Here's the album, + other info.
Here is where you can download the album. I got it off Xarph.net. It's pretty decent stuff. They are put out by a publisher who provide their recordings for free, but ask that you still buy the CDs. Though I'm not sure exactly where you can get the CDs, you can get their merch Here.
By the way, Google is very useful. I plugged in "Mario Paint" + "Electric Family" and got those results instantly. Try Googling well before saying you can't find any useful info on the web.
And someone might want to make some mirrors, this is Slashdot after all. -

Fiction books for the hacker in all of us
Here are a few fiction books for the hackers in all of us. These are reprints of classic series books dealing with inventors and the neat gadgets they used.
Purple House Press has all three of The Mad Scientist's Club books reprinted, with the 4th (previously unpublished) available next year. No geek is truly complete without have read these.
http://www.purplehousepress.com/msc.htm
Let's not forget Tom Swift. The first 25 volumes of the Tom Swift Sr. series are available as free e-texts from Project Gutenberg. The hard to find Tom Swift and His Giant Telescope has been reprinted and can be purchased here.
http://www.cafepress.com/wogglebug
Does anybody know of any other classic series books being reprinted with inventions/hacking as the central theme?
