27 and still hooked on cartoonnetwork.com games
"Yes, officer, I confess. Hand me a piece of paper to write off my guilt.
Twenty-seven, sir, twenty-seven and I'm still playing CartoonNetwork.com games. Even during business hours - that should be definitely added to my charges.
Say what?
Oh, no sir, a please pardon me for letting you down and not getting caught playing legally allowed games like: Grand Theft Auto, Quake 3, WarCraft and other. I find them... err... unrealistic. :)"Serious now - for kids under 9, just like me (divided by 3), I found the games available on cartoonnetwork.com hard to resist. If you wanna get the addicted to good stuff (of course), that IS the place.

Screw Trigun. Family Guy is on the way
I was looking at Cartoon Network's schedule, and it looks like, starting April 20th, Cartoon Network is getting rid of The Oblongs and Home Movies and will start showing Family Guy in the 11:30 timeslot Sun-Thu. How tight is that?

The View From Inside Central PA
This is going to sound sad, but here goes. So, PA wants to keep me from seeing bad things and is forcing my ISP to block these sites? Oh my God! I'm just so happy to have a government that wants to do something totally useless when it comes to protecting me while I surf the web!
Look, in all honestly, I only have a few websites that I ever visit with any regularity. Those sites are:
1. Of Course, Slashdot.
2. 1 Wrestling Dot Com - My Pro Wrestling Fix
3. My Site, Rancho Relaxo - Checking on the site, updating, etc.
4. AnimeFu - Opinions are like Escaflowne DVDs: Everybody Has One...
5. Keeping Up On That Wheaton Kid - Because the Real-Life Wil is much cooler than Wesley...
6. Cartoon Orbit - Their gToons game is neat, and yes, I'm addicted to cartoons.
7. Yahoo! Games - Pinochle and Spades.
That's it. At least once a day, I visit these sites (my own site even less). Sometimes I Google for info and images. But there is one thing that I'm most certainly not sick or stupid enough to go after, and that's child pr0n. Honestly, I don't have to go looking for regular, legal porn, either.
So, my ISP is now going to have to filter out sites I don't even care to think about, let alone visit. Not that I much care, really. Just interesting to know that I'm being protected by a state government that spawned the first ever Secretary of Homeland Security (Tom Ridge, who's only positive achievement as our governer was finally raising the highway speed limit to 65), cost my father his job twice (taking two state hosipitals and making them private), screwed up my student loans (AES/PHEAA is guilty there), can't maintain roads properly...
You get the idea, right? -
This Is Exactly Why...
...people should learn the joys of browsers like Mozilla and Opera.
I recently updated IE (it has a problem with Cartoon Network's gToons game) so I could do a little gaming. I noticed when I bumped it up to 5.5 that it gave me a list of things to install along with it, including Media Player, Outlook and Script Support. Script Support? Isn't that IE's problem in the first place? You'ld think they'd take that sorta crap out. Long story short, I unchecked everything but the browser update, and sat back while my painfully slow 56K connection chugged away.
After about an hour (damn Adelphia), I ran the update and of course, rebooted. Once I was back in Windows, I fired up IE, only to be greeted with an alert window telling me "Hey! You need to get Script Support!" Now, didn't I tell it that I didn't want that in the first place? After telling it that I never want that crap installed on my machine, things have been fine, but I still can't play gToons. Not to mention the damned thing made itself my default browser again without asknig my permission...
Crap like this Xupiter nonsense is exactly why either Microsoft needs to clean up it's act (script support is usually what starts up web-based virii), or people need to actually try and learn something about computers instead of sticking with the Beast for the easy factor. -

Go Bucs, Sorta...
I'm probably one of the few
/. readers who gives a crap about football (I dig hockey and soccer, too). But this year, my team, the Steelers, isn't in it (we got screwed by some shoddy officiating). So, I'm gonna go with my fallback "team to root for" system. When it comes to College Football, I'm a Penn State fan. And for years, I sat in the upper deck of Beaver Stadium watching many future NFL heroes play for the love of the game and school pride.
So how does this factor into me rooting for the Bucs? Well, one of the Bucs' wide recievers is former Penn State wide out Joe Jurevicius, who just celebrated the birth of his child last week. I wish Joe the best of luck, and I'm sure that everyone here in Happy Valley is pulling for him to get his first Super Bowl ring.
Then, after the big game (which I'm not watching due to (rock, not high school) Band Practice), I'm headed out to my local bar for post-game karaoke. Sure beats sitting at home playing gToons... -
Cartoons != animated cartoons
but a cartoon is a comic that has motion --a moving picture.
Definitions 1, 2, and 4 from "cartoon" in the American Heritage(R) dictionary refer to still cartoons. Definition 3 refers to "animated cartoons", which do have motion. "Political cartoons" most often do not. "Cartoonists" aren't always animators. Heck, even some of the material on the AOL Cartoon Network moves with such a low frame rate that it might as well almost be individual panels.

Re:This is good, but...Despite that, the W3C still has significant voice in what happens. Check out some of the stuff at W3Schools and you will see the way the w3c is pushing--toward technical excellence with the ability to make your pages look good and gracefully degrade. And these technologies are being adopted! If you compare the Distributed Proofreaders site to the Cartoon Network site, there is no doubt which is more usable. (note for those of you who may be so dense that you have doubts: not cartoon network). Guess who uses more w3c-friendly html?
Sited like that are everywhere because many web sites are made by people who care about such things, rather than fawning over browser-specific stuff.

Re:How about a Channel for the 80s kid?I'm talking Transformers, GI Joe, Voltron, Looney Tunes, Spiderman and His Amazing Friends, etc.? I try to watch saturday morning cartoons these days (yes, I'm 26), but they lack the magic of yore.
Boomerang runs cartoons from 1958 to 1976, 24 hours a day.

Cartoon network...
I went as SpongeBob last year and got a good response (it only took me 18 hours to paint a cardboard box to look like him), so I would like to go as another cartoon character this year. My g/f is going as Bubbles, which fits her personality perfectly (and voice, and hair color). I think I'll probably go as Dexter. The geekness would fit me perfectly.

I am sure I can prevent my computer from being infected just by using common sense (don't open unexpected attachments, download only from trustworthy sites, etc).
Except... there have been documented cases of commericial vendors accidently shipping viruses (virii?) on their products. The most recent one I can recall was an infected PowerPuff Girls DVD.
So much for trusted sources. I mean, if you can't trust Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles, who can you trust?

Re:Bad thing if it is a Mac only changeI wrote about this this morning, reposted here:
As reported on The Register, which was really a repost of an article from Compuwire, AOL has announced that in its next upgrade to their AOL client for Apple's OS X, it will use Netscape by default. (And just for those who want another link, Spider-Man is cool).
Most people (well, me) assume this means that AOL is using the Macintosh crowd as a testing base, then will make the same move on the Windows side of things by changing their PC client's default from IE to Netscape. The move won't really hurt Microsoft - it will still own 80% of the browser market, and since both Netscape and Internet Explorer are free, neither company will start having shifts of money.
But this isn't so much about money, as it is about control. AOL knows that their are two reasons Microsoft pushes Internet Explorer. Control of standards, and control of eyeballs. With every Windows computer that ships, it has Internet Explorer on it. And it's home page is MSN, Microsoft's media system.
Control the Eyeballs!
Netscape, by comparison, points to Netscape.com - which contains the collective linked knowledge to all things AOL/Time Warner. Links to news articles on CNN, Cartoon Network, and all else.
It's about the eyeballs. AOL wants you to see Time/Warner stuff, Microsoft wants those eyeballs to check out MSN. Both companies have a lot to gain by keeping your attention. AOL/Time Warner wants you to know all about their movies (like the upcoming Power Puff Girls movie, or their cable channels, or their electronic entertainment partnerships, or, just as important, keeping you signed up with AOL.
MSN has its wants, with its line of cable shows, plus all of the other Microsoft goodies, like Gamezone, Hotmail, Expedia and other services - which keep you plugged into the Microsoft system, and keeps those dollars coming in.
Control the browser, control the world
Just as important as the eyeballs is the technology that drives what they see. At last year's E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), AOl and Sony demonstrated using AOL on the Playstation 2 system, at the same time that Sony talked about running Linux on the Playstation 2. Now, almost a year later, Sony is getting ready to start shipping their hard drive/Ethernet/modem combo unit for $150. And AOL sees a large market place - one where there are more TV's than computers, and a $200 Playstation 2 in plenty of homes.
Odds are, Microsoft isn't going to make Internet Explorer for the Playstation system (not with their own Xbox on the market) - let alone for Linux. But since AOL has been sponsoring the creation of Mozilla, the Open Source browser Netscape is based on. Mozilla has been ported to nearly every operating system in existence - Linux, Macintosh, Solaris, and, of course, Windows. And across all operating systems, it provides the same look and feel - so now it doesn't matter what operating system you're using to surf the web/check your mail/chat with your friends on - Netscape looks the same. And you can bet it will be easy enough to develop and port to the Playstation 2 as well.
The implications could drive a shift of development. Suppose you're a web developer at this second, and you want to make sure people visiting your web page see all the whiz bang stuff. Right now, you spend most of your time making sure that Internet Explorer sees the page perfectly - then concentrate on the other browsers out there. Microsoft is happy, because to make sure IE looks the best, odds are you'll use Microsoft technology, which means you're spending Microsoft money (note: not Microsoft Money - different thing).
Netscape, being built on Mozilla, is HTML 4.0 standards compliant. That means that anything written for Netscape is certain to work with every other browser out there - including Internet Explorer (as long as Microsoft codes IE to be fully HTML compliant).
So now the web developer, in a post AOL-switching-to-Netscape time, has a new choice. Program your web site for IE, then for all the others - or make your web site HTML 4.0 standards compliant, and know that all browsers will render it correct the first time. There will still be questions about plug-ins (like those who like to use Flash enabled web sites, but by changing that over to Java, which runs on as many operating systems as Mozilla, developers can code around that hurdle. HTML 4.0 standards mean that anyone's tools can be used - Open Source, proprietary, or otherwise. Which means less money to Microsoft, and more power everyone else.
Maybe the move to Netscape won't change the world overnight, or drive subscribers to AOL. But it keeps the competition between the two companies alive.
And for most of us, competition is a good thing.
As always, I'm John "Dark Paladin" Hummel. And that's my opinion.

Re:i love it...bring back more...
i wish stations like maybe cartoon network would play more original 80's cartoons like transformers
That's what Boomerang is for. Its a 24 Hour network of "Classic Cartoons"... their focus might be a little earlier than the 80's, but they still show a lot of of the cartoons that I used to watch when I was younger. -
Some changes to the audience?
There is plenty of compelling content online for kids, at least as far as hey are concerned. Sites like neopets, Cartoon orbit and many other similar sites keep my 6th grader (and everyone she knows) on the web for as much time as she is allowed .
I guess looking at a coffee pot/fish tank in another state loses its novelty after a while... -
Re:why the 18+
Every cable system I've watched CN on in Oregon and Washington has been on the West Coast schedule. DirecTV does indeed use the East Coast feed here, and I generally watch that, then catch anything I miss on the local broadcast.
I just noticed that the Toonami schedule lists everything as, e.g., "5.0 PM [e/p]", which implies that they expect seperate feeds. -
Read up on what you intend to bashHmm... how to deal, how to deal.
Got to love that broad brush you paint alot of people with. Sort of the same brush folks use to paint people with above-average computer skills as "nerds" and "geeks" -- you know, lower than them because of being "less normal". Whatever the fuck that means -- I've never met a normal person -- but I digress.
I take the view that the original article was nothing more than food for the bean counters. Anime fandom is a bit like most other geek-leaning fandoms: tons of anal-retentives who ignore normal things (taking baths, socializing, etc); all for the joys of super-analyzing their particular hobby down to the sub-atomic particles. What do you want? The original article is on a column about edits to anime. Of course it's going to be spacious and go into detail that's not important to the normal viewer.
But I do find it rather funny that Yet Another Idiot is pushing the "anime is kiddie p0rn" angle. From your chest-puffing boast regarding having written a "manual" that says anime cons are big circlejerks to your quickness in pointing out the obvious content of the questions that relate to sex or sexuality; I'd say you're the one with the "sex" problem here. I suppose you could just be a sexually-frustrated middle-aged pot-bellied fella who wants to feel bigger by shooting at a rather harmless fandom (and one that doesn't really roll through Slashdot in any significant numbers).
If the only significant thing you have to say is "anime is kiddie p0rn", then why the hell are you responding to this? Somehow, in some small way, you hope to find fans who will rally around your silly and unimportant assertions? Rah rah for you. If you even knew what the hell Toonami was, you might actually be capable of contributing a worthwhile response; but alas, you're simply a windbag like many a "superior" nut I've run across. Perhaps you lazily typed in a worthless source of info in your quest for truth, and decided this was anime as far as you could find it with the search tools at your disposal. Did you even bother to Google your way to a passing understanding?
Read. Watch. Learn.
Do these things BEFORE you open your mouth (or pound your keyboard); you might actually (gasp) change your view of things! -
Re:New Cartoon Network Channels...
There is an old school network it's called 'Boomerang' look for it from you dish or digital cable provider. Perhaps they'll make a toonami channel someday, they've already brought the 'toonami' brand to WB kids. As far as Cartoon Cartoons go, well they're never on when I watch CN.
-
Re:why the 18+
Cartoon Network isn't running seperate feeds for east coast/west coast. Sceptics should check the showtimes.
That means that a show in adult swim is showing in the same time block as primetime, which means they need to keep it to primetime TV standards and that is TV-14. Remember all the trouble MTV got into for not having standards for Beavis and butthead? They aired it in prime time, but had too much swearing and violence and ended up putting the show into the 11 PM eastern time slot. Sticking to the TV-14 standards makes sure the shows are edited down to what you can see in shows like NYPD blues. If they ran the seperate feeds for each coast and aired around the time southpark does they could loosen the standards a little.
Oh and the 18+ is what is known as a 'marketing' gimic. They know there are a lot of anime fans out there. If they can get more of them to watch slightly edited 'adult swim' blocks it makes more animes possible to bring over.
BTW TV-14 does allow brief nudity, so they could for instance have run un-edited tenchi if it had been an adult swim program instead of a toonami block. I also hope they do more of the uncut midnight run. Gundam wing was shown uncut there and that was really awesome of them. I know you have a Tivo so if they do more uncut midnight runs you'll be sure to catch them. -
Re:News for American Nerds only
I'd like to make the suggestion that if you click on the link, and the content looks like no channel you've ever seen before in your life, then IGNORE THE POST and don't whine about it! How hard is that?
Seriously...Aren't Americans supposed to be the whining, self-centered ones? I have plenty of friends in other parts of the world, but everytime I see something like this, i'm still damn glad to be living in good ole' NY state, USA....Not to mention embarassed for those that CAN control themselves. -

When you sign the petition, let them know that you are going to suggest Cartoon Network pick up Futurama. Then go to Cartoon Network's feedabck page and let them know that you'd like them to pick up the show if Fox drops it!

Re:Not the sort of thing that belongs on kid TV.
I have sort of wondered about it being on Nickelodeon, but I honestly don't think it's any worse than Ren & Stimpy, which I absolutely loved when I was a kid! I personally hope that Cartoon Network picks it up. Maybe if enough people tell them they want to see it on there, they'll do it. But I for one hope Jhonen can keep working on it. Long live ZIM!
-
Am I missing something?
First of all I have seen a small number of Zim episodes and was not impressed. While it does have it's moments (I enjoy GIR), most of the material in it was loud-obnoxious-gross-out stuff, kinda like Ren and Stimpy in their bad episodes. I just don't know how people call this inspired. Again, I could be missing something. Please enlighten me.
Secondly, all the posts about Zim being the best cartoon in years must not realize that Adult Swim exits and in particular the hour from 11-12p.m EST that they show "Williams Street" productions.
I highly recommend checkin it out Sunday and Thursday nights on the Cartoon Network. That's not to mention that they play Cowboy Bepop for you anime fans.
just my opinion, ignore it or mod it down at will

It's about time
Kudos for Fox for finally getting this deadbeat show off the air, albeit about 3 years too late. Now if they can just give the Simpsons the same mercy killing, I'd be happy. It's painful to see just how pandering that once great show has become. Now that Samurai Jack is on opposite of the Simpsons, absolutely no one (well, no one who has Cartoon Network) has any excuse for providing the Simpsons with an audience. I'd like to see Fox put their marketing muscle behind Futurama and the brilliant King of the Hill, but they'll probably use the new hole in the schedule for something inane like Temptation Island 5 or Who Wants to Rip-off the Latest TV Pop-Culture Craze.

Re:AOLTW is cutting costs to save jobs
True, but even when there are enough episodes, they still drop it. Sailor moon and all of the Gundams had plenty. Dispite the short number of episodes, Outlaw Star has been played 5 days per week for a long time now. I think its going to go back on at 12:30 after dbz every night. As much as I like db+dbz I would really like to see something different.
I suggest people use the feedback form here I really like the Adult Swim idea and think that many dubbed Anime's would go great there. -

Unbeknown to Zeon, the Federation has been working on building its own ultimate weapon: Gundam. The new prototype is to be shipped to Earth from its home on the space colony Side 7. But a surprise attack puts the mobile suit into the hands of a teenager who just might save the world. -

Stand up and make yourself heard. If you are upset about this then you should use the feedback link and let dragonball z network er, I mean cartoon network know exactly how you feel. The only reason I ever tune into that network is to watch mobile suite gundam and cowboy bebop. Cowboy Bebop is brilliant! I've only seen three episoeds to date but each one was amazing. Just my luck, as soon as I start to like something the network drops it. I with I had bland tastes so I could be part of the majority and not have to deal with this stuff.
The only way dragonball z network will make a change for the better is if everyone uses the feedback link so we can send the message loud and clear that we are pissed off. Adult swim is great but after a bonehead programming move like this I won't be at all surprised to see them drop space ghost next.

Please use this Feedback Link to let cartoon network or should I say the dragonball z network know how you feel. I'm pissed since these were the only two shows I ever tuned to cartoon network to watch. Gundam kicked ass and cowboy bebop was brilliant! They need to know that they are making a huge mistake so make your voice heard!
