Re:Chesterton wasn't at Oxford
I personally wish more men like Lewis would lead the American church today, because in the absence of reason, superstition has become more and more powerful.
I second that. It's also interesting to note that one source of fundamentalist bigotry painted the writings of CS Lewis as "occultic". The infamous Chick tracts had this one:
http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0046/0046_01.a sp
They don't have the reference in there anymore, but at the part where the minister is encouraging everyone to burn their occult books, the older versions IIRC referenced CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien in a little sidenote. -
Jack Chick!
I thought Jack Chick already published A Parent's Guide to Role Playing Games?

Re:video game without violence!?!
Yet you seem to have no problem with Guild Wars. What powers the SPELLS in GW, hmm?
Could it be... SATAN?!?
you're just making your religion look like it's populated by narrow-minded superstitious zealots like yourself.
Well, isn't that special? -
Chick Tract Post!
I couldn't resist posting this.
As we all know, playing D&D and computer games leads to mental deformity, satanism, inbreeding, communism, and foreign beer consumption.
In a similar vein, your son could be a computer hacker!!! Parents beware, do not allow your children to turn into the Columbine trench coat mafia. Lock them indoors with some truly wholesome literature. Make sure that our country does not succumb to this dark menace. -

I applaud you for this it's too 'hip' nowadays to vote against showing anything in public but there are websites I don't want my litle cousins to be looking at. I concur that there's nothing inherrantly wrong with this idea. There are reasons most of which you mentioned that it probably will fail but why shouldn't the government maintain a voluntary list of not childrensafe sites.
People are always telling parents they should be monitoring what their children see if they're that concerned, but you can't monitor kids all the time. I should be able to allow my kids to go on the internet for a few hours without having to be afriad that suddnely they're going to end up somehow at rape porn or something sick like that.
It wouldn't be fair to force everyone into what my view of distasteful is but a voluntary database is a good idea.
It's very frustrating how everyone on the internet either assumes you're an democrat to your bones or you're Jack Chick. Just because I believe in blocking porn sites in schools doesn't mean I think playing dungeons and dragons makes you evil. Just because I may believe in intelligent design doesn't mean I agree with him that muslims are evil.
I think ICANN just approved a bunch of domains and from what I remember .xxx was one of the least likely to get approved. (it did not) -

Re:gee its ok
Why is it a religious issue to not want your children to see something like that old slashdot favorite image with "goat" in the name?
It's my job as a parent to determine what I want my kids to see on the computer. It's not the government's job to make a list of what's not OK for my kids to look at. The government has no Constitutional authority to maintain such a list nor to mandate it's use. The courts have consistantly ruled that this kind of censorship is unconstitutional.Personally, I'd rather have my kids see Bob Goatse in all his glory than have them stumble across this poisonous filth accidentially. Somehow I doubt the things I think are offensive will find their way on to the list.
One flaw with our system of government is that politicians are not punished for intentionally passing legislation they know to be unconstitutional. Politicians who sponsor, vote for, or enact unconstitutional laws should be held criminally liable for their malfeasance.
Virtually every elected official in the country has sworn an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. By willfully violating this oath they should by rights forfeit their office.
It's my opinon that promoting and lobbying for blatantly unconstituional laws constitutes seditious conspiricy under US law. IMHO The governer of Utah should be arrested, stripped of power, and sent to Federal PMITA prison for 20 years.

"Science" centers minus the science...
I vote we start controversy pointing out that many of these "science centers" (such as the one here in Ft Worth) are taking the science out. A sort-of fight-fire-with-fire approach.
Then again, it'd be like any argument with a fool. They'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.... In this case, it's the science-heads vs. the fundies, and somehow I don't think the science-heads will win by throwing a temper tantrum like the fundies did.
Maybe we should study some Chick tracts to get an idea of what their playbook is... (Ok, so I'm feeling a little snarky tonight.)

The truth about Google
Many people believe that Goooogle is an honest and righteous company. I was researching the company as part of my employer's ethical business policy, and I was surprised about what I found.
At first I was impressed by Google's "Do No Evil" policy. This was until I doscovered that it wasn't a policy. It was a reminder. The board of directors are inherently evil and need to repeat the mantra to stop them from committing great sins.
First of all, Google trawls thorough the internet, copying everything it takes into its local cache. This is potentially copyright infringement, and theft of bandwidth. This is opt-out. Not opt-in. They also have no policy regarding long term storage of user's data.
But these are just surface problems. I did some further digging and was frightened by what I found. Google gained its success amde froma pact with the devil in 1999. Since it is a satanic product, mere use of google puts your soul in jeapordy. A google search for ""Satan" will give "The church of satan" and not one of the much more popular sites warning againt evil The CEO of Google eats children. Once a week, he orders that a child is taken from his dungeon, and slaughtered, then roast for 3 hours. After this, it is served to the CEO and guests. Those who do not join him are executed. Those who do are damned.
So I warn you. Stop using google. If not for your own soul, for the children. -

Re:Sounds good to me.
I have no idea how you came to the (inaccurate) conclusion that I was a dualist.
Obviously because you claimed there are things beyond God's power. You said that the punishment of sinners was the responsibility of the victim, not the executioner. Either God is really supreme, and all of Hell and damnation is due to His will, or He is not the prime mover, and is balanced by other forces (natural or intelligent) of similar power. (Satan being the usual suspect, since a large fraction of lay Christians believe in unspoken dualism, using Satan as a mental crutch to explain why a loving God allows bad things to befall)
Your terrorist analogy breaks down because you're blaming God for our sin.
Wrong. I never said that. The point you're missing is that I attribute to "God" not the sin, but the punishment, which, if the Bible is to be believed, is something He's proud of.
Your terrorist analogy breaks down because you're blaming God for our sin.
So, can I come to your house and spy on you with my infrared binoculars? Then, when I see you commit some sin, I'll shoot you with a ketamine dart and abduct your sleepy self to my backwoods cabin.
There I'll chain you above a pit of boiling diesel, slowly lowering the hook, only stopping if you proclaim to love me. (Which I won't explain to you myself, but will assume you've heard rumored beforehand)
My actions in that hypothetical scenario are so wrong I needn't continue- but what needs explaination is why God is praised for doing something much worse. That story was hardly an analogy at all- it's almost a literal description of Hell and God's Judgement (as taken from Jack Chick, for example)
To expand on one point: injustice. Part of the wrongness is that death by burning is a disproportional punishment for most sins. It might be fair for murder, but applied to theft, sloth, vanity, or covetness, it's totally excessive. Yet, God allegedly applies a punishment infinitely worse to all sins uniformly.
Honestly, I would not feel comfortable spending externity with a guy who punishes Mohandas Ghandi exactly as harshly as Josef Stalin. (Both major leaders who committed multiple sins through their lives, and both died without accepting Jesus). A loving God would give the denizens of Hell an opportunity to change their minds after a few centuries of torment.
I don't claim to know that.
So, you're open to the possibility it could be out of arrogant, disdainful spite?
We don't have to sin.
And God doesn't have to punish sinners either. But He does. For no reason. Which is cruelty. (All the "evils" which people frequently attribute to Satan are really the responsiblity of the one who created and commanded Lucifer)
God didn't create us so that we are programmed to automatically sin.
Another unanswerable dilemma. How many humans have there been so far? 7 billion now, so say 50 billion total? And out of all of those, how many have been without sin? Depending on who you ask, maybe 1, maybe 5000. Some would even say millions. Regardless, a vanishingly small fraction of humans are sinless. Fewer than 1%.
So, if I design a car, and 99% of them explode before driving 50km, then you know that either (a) I am a dangerously bad designer, or (b) I am an evil engineer who wants things to blow up.
Similarly, since 99% of humans sin, and God created humans, then either he's a clumsy, unintelligent designer, or he wanted them to sin. Either one of those alternatives leads to unsurmountable paradoxes.
We were in a true and loving relationships with God until we (not to be confused with God) screwed it up.
Are you claiming to be Adam? Or Eve? I thought they'd both died already. If you're NOT claiming to be one of the 2 people alive prior to the screw-up, then exactly HOW do you think you caused it in any way? Time travel?
Or are you saying (the usual Christian line) that you've inherited responsibility for the crimes of a distant ancestor? But no just deity would hold a child for a parent's sin... -
Re:ESRB? Holy Comics Code, Batman!
Also, D&D will turn you into Pentagram-doodling witch and the only way to come back to Jeebus is to burn all your D&D stuff (and heck, better throw all your other books on the fire, too).

Re:Third party politics starts locally...
I've tried to write what I can-- but I've never written anything particularly oriented at "joe sixpack".
Can anybody else link to something aimed at Joe Sixpack that I can link to? Are there any tracts, along the lines of those published by Chick Publications (but less fundamentalist), that I can plant in public restrooms? I'm at a loss for Google keywords.
Maybe run for an office
I'm deep in student loan debt from my BSCS. How can I afford to go back to college and learn enough management and political science to know what the heck I'm doing should I get elected? In addition, by the time I'm constitutionally old enough to run, how can I know that the situation won't be 10 times worse than it is now? But yes, I do give to the EFF, and when I do get a job, I plan to give to the LP.
Get the word out. Find like-minded people and band together.
Any ideas, other than mentioning my anti-Disney site, which touches on the copyright law issues?

Re:This "story" is click bait
Are you sure you haven't been reading too much Jack Chick?
Christians have been moaning about the "Christian persecution" in America for a very long time, but look around you - you're the majority. That your overwhelming majority is becoming a moderate majority is not a death knell for your faith. In America, we tend to decide that the weaker churches need to be protected from intimidation, hate crime, etc. This does not mean that we don't like Christianity and it's bigger, more established churches. It just means that they, in view of the law, don't need the kind of protection that a more controversial religion - say, I dunno, Witchcraft - might need from those who are willing to silence it from the get-go.
I know that many people complain about religion being removed from schools, but I seem to remember them teaching us the Tower of Babel story as history. I had a science teacher who said that the Theory of Evolution was bad because Darwin was an atheist. And I only graduated High School 4 years ago! Is this good teaching? Maybe if the kids only need to be taught faith, but they also need to learn science and maths and the liberal arts. If faith precludes fact, then the public schools have a duty (and more importantly, an obligation as enforced by the election system, lawsuits, etc) to teach the facts, to teach them well. If they are good teachers, they will bring up the conflict with religion and allow the students to make the decision of faith. If they aren't, they will push one side or the other. But this BS about kids getting punished for being peacefully Christian in school is a myth. When the kids encourage the school to harass religious minorities, then the school will step in. Otherwise, I've found that they don't care.
On the other hand, children who have no association to a religion seem to fare worse than any other group. The teachers and the churches treat them like undecided voters. A coherent minority group - even a controversial one like Scientology or the Church of Satan - can get more support because they are defined. Kids whose parents let them make their own religious choices get the short end of the stick. It's hard to claim religious discrimination when nobody knows what you are. This creates a tremendous peer pressure load and generally ends up bad for everyone. -
Re:D&D Suicide?
There is a good PCGamer interview with Michael Stackpole that covers a lot of it.
The Pulling Report (named after Patricia Pulling, founder of BADD -- "Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons" -- who claimed that playing D&D led her son to commit suicide.
Of course, what comment about the "evils" of D&D would be complete without a link to Dark Dungeons, one of those annoying pamphlets that conservative Christian whackos hand out on the streets.

The Vatican is hardly "The most conservative body in the civilized world", unless your definition of the "the civilized world" is "anything no more conservative than the Vatican". Most of the people who think Harry Potter is the tool of the Liberal-Commie-Satan axis probably think the Vatican is too, or wouldn't be at all surprised to find them in league.
Like, for example, Jack Chick, whose lovely comic books claim:
Harry Potter turns kids into witches(the Harry Potter angle is near the bottom)
The Catholic Church is pagan and/or in league with Satan -

Re:DUH!!!The very article itself is a slight example of religious people not respecting games.
But best example of religious people not respecting games is D&D. It started when a detective hired to find a missing person thought his "victim" might have killed himself in a live action D&D game. He started a whole anti-D&D movement, mainly using religious groups. Eventually the public outcry resulted in the missing person annoucing to the worl he was alive and had run away from college because he was depressed about his life in general (nothing to do with the D&D game.)
And then there were the Chick comics that made up really ridiculous christian fears to warn parents about D&D. Click here to read one of the lying comics. That comic is NOT a "Joe-Job", it was a real comic put out by religious fanatics.
-
Mod Parent Up!(TM)Yes, the parallel "Red Scare" which lead to the creation of the Comics Code was a historical disaster.
What's worse was that many artists at the time bought into it. Scott McCloud once wrote (drew?) that old artists like Rube Goldburg didn't appreciate the trendy artists getting uppity and forgetting their "vaudeville" roots.
That perception persists even now. Jack Chick, the creator of those infamous Bible tracts, started making them to prempt the "Communists" and "Athiests" from stealing the hearts and minds of "Innocent, God-Fearing American Youths" via comic propoganda. To him, comics were a means to an end, not a medium worthy of respect in and of itself.

Persecution complex
Of COURSE the IE folks think that MS is the underdog. MS religionists, much like fundamentalist Christians (think Jack Chick), are under the impression that their group is being persecuted, and that they are somehow 'victims'. Christians far outnumber adherents of all other religions combined in the US, and at least one Christian holiday is a Federal holidays, yet morons like Chick still seem to believe that Christians in the US are a persecuted minority. Ditto with Microsoft... despite having a tremendous monopoly, and having had said monopoly for quite a long time, Microsoft people like to think they're the underdogs. They aren't!

Who said anything about the Catholic Church?
We're talking about pseudomilitiant extremist Christians in America today, aka the "Christian Right", which is more of a cultural group than a religious bloc. And while there's probably some militant Catholics out there somewhere, they probably don't get to be counted as part of the "Christian Right" club. In fact, that particular movement sometimes seems to hate Catholics even almost as much as they hate us homosexuals.
No, clearly not all Christians are in with this crowd. And not all Christians are "turning a blind eye" to things like abortion clinic bombings. But within the Christian community a violent minority does exist. And the number of "Christians" that are turning a blind eye, or even to some degree tacitly approving, to the extremists among them is large enough to be rather scary. And the number of Christians who practice their personal religion in a totally healthy, positive and loving way, yet seem to be totally unconcerned that a nontrivial number of people out there are applying the name "Christian" to a religion based essentially around hate, is much larger.
Basically, if you're trying to protest the painting of all Christians with a wide brush, then yes, you're right, good point. But other than that, I don't see how one Christian minority group disapproving of violent tactics makes the actions of another Christian minority group which does approve of violent tactics any less of a "lynching". -

Re:You know, thats really not funny. [NT]
Keeping his word and worshiping the bible are two different issues. Jesus wrote no text. His word is not what in the bible, his paraphrased words are. And if they are divine and not divinly inspired then you must then go to their source and not read any interpretation because each interpretation has it's weakness. NIV to KJV to Catholic. If you believe that God told the Clerigy of the 6th centry to cannons the exact books in the bible then you should remain a catholic, because it is the catholic church which chose which books were made into the bible. If you do not then your claim the bible is divine cannot be true because it was put together by man. This is a paradox. If you think God told the clerigy then you should be catholic, since the catholics did that. If you do not then the work is a collation of human works inspired by God and hold no authority in this argument. The reformation was as political as it was theological thus it cannot be divine in inspiration.
You really should study the history of the Bible and the various translations. I suggest An Understandable History of the Bible as a good start. If you do not believe the Bible is God's word, how do you know 100% for sure you are saved and will spend eternity in Heaven?

Re:Ah, D&D
I happen to be a fairly devout Christian, but that sort of FUD makes me sick! What were they thinking?
It gets worse. An article linked from the strip says:
- The MWV teaches that there exists in the universe a neutral force, like gravity, which is magic. In this worldview, there is no sovereign God; but rather the universe is run like a gigantic piece of machinery. Magic's application is the understanding of how to manipulate the universe to get what you want. The analogy would be of putting a right coin in the slot of a vending machine and pushing the button. You automatically get your candy-assuming you used the right coin and pushed the right button. The MWV is like that. If you know the right technology (spell, ritual, incantation, etc.) the universe must respond-just like the light must go on if you flip the switch. It is automatic, and scientifically repeatable.
- The Judeo-Christian Worldview (i.e. from the Bible, and held by most cultures in the Western world to some degree) teaches, on the contrary, that the universe is in control of a sovereign Person, God. To get "results," He must be asked. Thus, it is more like a child going up to a parent and asking for candy, than getting it from a vending machine. The parent may say "yes," "no," or "Wait till later." Similarly, in the Bible, there is no way to automatically manipulate God to get what you want, because He is an omnipotent Person. Additionally, God says that magic is deep and abominable sin (see above).
So, if I understood this twist of logic correctly, he just "proved" that light switches (or, more to the point, any scientifically repeatable phenomenon) and God can't both exist in the same universe (ours; what that does have to do with the D&D fantasy universe is anyone's guess).
These kind of phenomenons aren't unexpected, thought. Jesus said that there would be several people falsely claiming to act in his name (or even be him) near the end of this world. As this article (and another one linked from the "Dark Dungeons" I examined) is full of lies ("Loss of Self-control-authority over self is surrendered to the DM. Depending on the personality and ego-strength of the player, this loss can be near absolute."), unproven or incomprehensible claims (" Degradation-pain and torture are heavily involved in sadistic, sexual situations that graphically appeal to visceral impulses." - does anyone understand what this means ?), or completely inane logic like above, it's hard to see it as anything but a prime example trying to discredit Christianity through such "moles".

The guy who wrote that comic...
Is a guy named Jack Chick. All of his tracts (they're not really comics) can be found on his website. He's got some zingers, including some real anti-Catholic stuff. I recall somewhere seeing someone publish some anti-Chick tracts somewhere. Guy's a recluse that no one has seen in a long time.

Re:Which was first?
I find it a little troubling that the first reference to this quote yielded by my admittedly cursory Googling lies in Smokescreens , an online "book" by Jack Chick (of Chick Tract fame) in which he denigrates Catholics and Catholicism -- in part by attempting to establish a sinister relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Nazis.
Now, I don't know what that says for the validity of the quote, but I personally take it as dogma that anything Jack Chick embraces is automatically suspect, if not outright wrong. Much as I may occasionally enjoy lambasting some of the baser forms of Christianity, I'm not prepared to do it with any assistance from a hystrionic hatemonger like Chick. -
Re:"Playing Dungeons & Dragons by yourself?"
I'm a big D&D fan, to be sure, and I like playing Dungeons and Dragons. But...by myself? Are you serious?
Oh, yeah, you can do a lot of wonderful things like fighting Zombies and stuff.
Seriously, though, there have actually been solo modules - not sure if the most recent D&D offerings have these, probably not. Admittedly these are not as much fun as group ones, though...
The solo mods are typically "choose option and jump to a numbered chapter" kind of deals. I've seen two for Classic D&D (the above pictured module, and the introductory adventure for a later edition of D&D), and one for GURPS (likewise an intro mod, in the Basic Set).
These days, if you want to play D&D with others without leaving your home, I recommend IRC, or something like OpenRPG, or Neverwinter Nights with a DMed game arranged through neverwinterconnections.com.

John 3
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. For John was not yet cast into prison. Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee b -
