Re:Communist revolution is needed
For the lazy..
Estimated 8.9/100 in guns per 100 ppl privately owned so about 1/11th of the amount in the US
http://www.gunpolicy.org/firea...
http://www.gunpolicy.org/firea..."Guns may be acquired for self-defense, hunting or sports activities only. Russian citizens can buy smooth-bore long-barreled firearms and pneumatic weapons with a muzzle energy of up to 25 joules. An individual cannot possess more than ten guns unless part of a registered gun collection, guns that shoot in bursts and having more than a ten-cartridge capacity are prohibited."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O...Honestly in today's age, there is no excuse for lazy assed ppl to cry 'citation needed', this is not an encyclopedia, its a debate, take the effort to research rather then cry for others to do it for you. I remember the horrid old days of the internet when searching for data was a task, its not, grow up or shutup.

Re:Nothing
This used to be good advice, because Macs were such a small share of the market that the malware authors didn't bother with them. This isn't quite so true any more.
If you want to get them a platform that won't be targeted by malware authors for quite some time, install Linux Mint on their PC. As a bonus, it won't cost anything extra (unless they have some shitty printer that has no Linux support, but a new Linux-compatible printer is much cheaper than a new Mac). As an extra bonus, you can install the KDE version of Linux Mint and assuming they're coming from XP or Win7, they won't even have to learn a whole new GUI paradigm.

Re:Fake AVs
was just chatting to a friend about this and he then sent me this as a very effective removal tool
No, no, for the best malware removal tool you need to get this one. Run it straight from the download link and give it administrator access when it installs. Don't mind the spelling errors, it's really a first-rate piece of software. -
Re:Certainly one could be *far* more evil than thi
Considering how little the average internet user even pays attention to SSL, one could very easily imitate a bank, ebay, paypal, etc...
And since you can be at the mercy of the open WAP users own DNS server, instead of being tricked by a bogus:
http://127.0.0.1/www.ebay.com/
or:
http://www.ebay.com.bogusserver.com.ru/
You'll see:
http://www.ebay.com/
and possibly be even less likely to notice it as being bogus.
Well that's the last time I do all my plaintext internet banking through some strangers open WAP! -
You are completely wrong about An-124's
No we don't have an An-124, it's the largest plane currently flying, built by the russians partly as an expression of national pride, and it cost shitloads. Only flies a few times a year btw, not a lot of people need that much lifting power.
They were built to carry miscellaneous military and civilian equipment like a couple of tanks or Buran buster. They fly every day, and carry anything from Sony Playstations to US military shipments to Afganistan. Volga-Dnepr Airlines has 10 An-124's in active use. New An-124 would not cost more than 80 millions of dollars - this can be hardly described as "shitloads" for the plane of its size. You might try to tell american military or u.s. companies like General Electric and Lockheed-Martin that they do not need this kind of lifting power, though they are not likely to listen to your advice.
So please stop being an idiot, and do not bullshit me and everybody on matters you have no slightest idea about.

Heliodisplay
In Issue 205 of ZZZ Online, we discussed the HelioDisplay. There are some really cool holographic systems out there, but they're expensive and not quite what I think anyone expected.
The cool think about things like the HelioDisplay is that it uses water vapor to make the projection. I didn't see any of that around Princess Leia. I think the biggest obstacle has been trying to make holographic projections appear in space without having some kind of hard media (glass, crystal, etc.) surrounding it.
It's coming, just give it some time. If someone ever discovers Hard Light, I'd like to talk to them.

Re:Interesting
I tend to agree with this viewpoint. I did the same research for an upgrade to ZZZ Online, but came up short. Typically, depending on the needs of the customer (even if it is yourself), are going to demand extensive changes to the code. Usually, this is enough to make you run screaming when the originators of whatever source you original used upgrades things due to "security concerns"
My suggestion is to download a bunch of different CMS systems and outline the functionality you really need most. If you pick something, make sure it's easy to understand and extensible.

FMD Discs
And in 2002 we were supposed be getting damn close to have Flourscent Multilayered Discs. This was 1TB as well and they had fully functional prototypes. *sniff* *sniff* http://www.zzz.com.ru/index.php?area=articles&act

DMD - 1 terabyte CDs
What I want to know is why all the companies waste time with these intermediary technologies when CD-like media that hold one terabyte is available?
See the article entitled: FMD / DMD. The Next Step in Storage
They are also see-through. YAY!

cheaper and easier
FMD disks, a third of the way down the page. A lot closer to reality, but also illustrates how pie-in-the-sky so many of these theoretical storage solutions are.
-
The arms race continues: FMDsThat technology marches on should not come as a big surprise to anyone. Of course DVDs will be replaced eventually. 10 yrs sounds as good a guess as any.
In my opinion, the DVD IS indeed doomed sooner rather than later, mostly because the content owners have become disillusioned with what they believed would be copy-proof tech. So they are looking for the next one, which they can control better. It should also hold high-definition media, meaning an increase in the amount of data, delaying the copying/sharing-problems a couple of years. Thus the war between consumers and content owners continues.
This little tech might be a candidate, and has an interesting conspiracy theory already attached: "FMD/DMD-The Next Step in Storage" (middle of page in issue 197).

Stories from the Real World
Not so long ago, I went to a LAN Party and watched an acquaintance of mine sit through the entire thing playing "There" while the rest of enjoyed "real" games. Honestly, I couldn't believe he even bothered coming to the LAN in the first place.
After a while, he went on about how cool it was and showed us all his "flirting" with his "online wife". Knowing that he was married with a newborn child, I asked him, "What does your REAL wife think about all this?" He replied, "She does it TOO!".
I gulped and listened to him ramble on about the fact that his REAL wife was even planning to go meet her ONLINE HUSBAND. Obviously the guy had serious marital problems burgeoning, but he was alas unaware. I'm sure that by now he's either divorced or practicing online swinging (shudders)
Geeks all have this problem with balancing computer time vs. their relationships. It's hard, but that's why I end up staying awake into the wee hours of the night. Also, another rule: Play games you know you can put down. This is why LAN parties are good
... you go, play all night, and then it's out of your system (hopefully). Elsewise, join "Gamer's Anonymous" and realize that you're no different than a Crack Smoker.I wrote an article in Issue 168 of ZZZ Online about some of this that may be of interest.

Re:my own?
Those of us over at ZZZ Online have been developing our own CMS after doing a similar review of popular systems. I've tinkered with LiveJournal, Moveable Type, Greymatter, and even pMachine and found each of them to be somehow lacking when you really want to make a "hands off" kind of site.
We're trying to steer away from simple blogging though as we think that collaboration reader-focused content is much more important than the mindless banter that some people like to fill their ISP's servers with.

Re:Nope
Either way it totally unimportant because windmills just plain suck compared to Gyromills. There is no competition here. Surface winds are slow and irregular where the jet stream is VERY fast and consistent. I mean just look at a Gyromills. its 20 feet of square steel tubing and two electric motor/generators and a tether. Not a very big capital expenditure, in fact it's so elegant and simple and profoundly smart it boggles the mind but no one is doing shit about it. It makes me sick.
Its just like the energy bill, if they just put some money into these things, and Changing the World Technologies Thermal Depolymerization process we could stop importing oil, stop putting shit in our rivers, and taking carbon from the ground and putting into the air.
Dams? Dams suck but did you know that a array of micro turbines would generate more power without disrupting the rivers? It all about people not wanting to change because they spent so much money on building a wall of concrete that they don't want to admit that something better might have come along. Its Galileo vs. the Church.
Nuclear? Did you read the article in Wired some time ago that they now have a process where you expose waste to a high-energy gamma ray and speed up the half-life? It even generates waste heat that can be turned into power. When you're done you just have the results of the 60/40 split.
So in conclusion it's not how fast the rotors go, its price/dollar. Its antiquated-flat-world-no-such-thing-as-germs-desig n vs. elegant. It just happens that the most efficient, cheapest, and most easily deployed happens to be environmentally friendly too. Wow what a concept. -

A stunning audio example of computer-controlled F1
I guess this is a good excuse to post this fine example of the precise, computer-controlled fuel management of an F1 engine.
This particular engine is a 10-cylinder Asiatech F1 engine, running through a pre-programmed warmup procedure.. and somebody had a little bit of fun with the programming. :-)

flying cars...and we still don't use flying cars.
you are right that we as public cannot buy them yet. but that does not mean it's not there.
moller international has been working on flying cars for a while now and it's very near completion. I would recommend reading more about it here(about middle of page) at zzz.
You can also invest in his company. stock symbol is MLER or something.

Pyramid Keyboard
Remember this neat keyboard system (it was on slashdot, but I didn't find the linke...)
why use the present design of a key board anyway?
You could store your personal layout (suitable to your personal preferences, what you type most often, etc)on your PDA or online and what ever keyboard you use you simply upload your profile and the keyboard is remapped.
You could even develop your profile, with a long running algorithm that makes adjustments as you type moving frequently used letters to easier keys to use for your fingers if you have bad arthirtis, etc. -

do-it yourselfer?
the DMV would never make such a monstrosity legal in the us...the only reason the smart car is legal (i assume) is b/c it's ideal for european city life. kit cars are exempt from alot of saftey concerns for the driver/passenger. looks a bit like a motorcycle conversion...maybe motorcycle rear end + home-made front contraption. There's plenty of crazy cars made by do-it yourselfers out there, not to mention kit cars. This guy made his own 3wheeled car out of WOOD. and it's street legal. It's a inline 2 engine, and only weighs ~900 lbs, so it gets anywhere from 55-75 mpg. the picture is pretty neat.

Re:That was only the beginning
The great thing is, the cockroaches (more info at ZZZ) can be radio controlled, which solves many of the problems with cats, such as unpredictability and uncontrollability. Plus, they're slightly less conspicuous.
Of course, if seen, it might be harder to avoid getting killed than with a cat.
On a slightly offtopic note, does anyone remember the game Bad Mojo, where you had to steer a cockroach around a bunch of obstacles? That might be good training for future spy-insect operators :-) -
Re:A bit much?
In another of Stephenson's books "Snow Crash" they had similar clothes. The chick in that book could turn on or off her brightly colored clothes. The mafia guys could turn off and on their bright yellow MAFIA (i think it was mafia) logos on their jackets.
I have been following this idea since reading that book over a year ago. zzz.com.ru runs odd stories about various things, including a few on LED fabrics in the past.
This could be really cool, IMHO. -
