1080p works well on a Core Duo mini
Apple's site might say that but it's not the reality of the situation. I tried 1080p last night with the HD downloads they offer and it works just fine (on a Core Duo Mac mini with 2GB of RAM). Also read this account for more confirmation, and a number of other posts elsewhere.

Nothing new
The bloggers mentioned in the story, who presumably are able to articulate their own opinions, received Wal*Mart email and began to simply copy the PR text into the blogs.
Wait, I don't understand. This is news? I thought it was common knowledge that a large portion of bloggers (the majority?) simply copy text from elsewhere as their "blog". Take Digg as an example. Digg integrates with many blogging services, allowing users to write commentary on the story, and link back to the Digg page from their blog. The feature is quite popular as most of the front page stories have a "blog" attached to them.
Now with such a feature, you would expect each blogger to provide insightful commentary on the issue at hand, right? Wrong. The majority of the blogs do nothing more than replicate the exact text from the Digg story. Not only are these blogs redundant, but they add another level of indirection to anyone who might happen upon them. ("Oh, so I go from blog, to Digg, to Link, right?") Ok, so the better blogs have a direct link AND a Digg link. But this is really nothing more than sydication of rather fluffy content.
Here's a few examples of what I'm talking about:
http://nik-hil.blogspot.com/
http://www.r00tware.com/
http://hackerslife.blogspot.com/
http://www.petesblog.com/
These are examples of "real" blogs with sydicated Digg content mixed in:
http://jacobsonster.blogspot.com/
http://howgoodisthis.wordpress.com/
Now these blogs aren't entirely without value. In many cases, it's a way of aligning your tastes with those of a particular blogger. i.e. That blogger only links to articles you want to know about. It's also good for the site that's being Dugg, as they have more links to their site.
But no, there's nothing magically articulate about bloggers. Plenty of them are happy to syndicate. -
Re:Slow news day?
What previous article? Oh, you mean the one on Digg. Yes, it seems as though visiting Digg can help you to predict what will appear on Slashdot the following day! I've seen at least 10 duplicate articles first appear on Digg, then on Slashdot the next day. I guess it's useful if you want your Slashdot submissions to go through.

a rism_for_karmaNow I really can't think of any reason one would waste time on a project like that. If you're so anti-slashdot, then just leave it, buddy! Furthermore their complaints are pretty much bogus currently. Since the editorials on slashvertizements that cmdrtaco wrote last month, the situation improved pretty much I would say. Didn't see a dupe in a long time as well.
Anyway, I hope it won't become a habit, as it spoils the effort of people that really are interested in writing serious discussion, which is were most of us are here for anyway.
-
Re:Dupe :-(
Since Slashdot's editors obviously don't care anymore, why not visit Digg and check out the new AJAX threaded comment system? You can actually rate comments in real-time, set friend flags, and more. At Digg, if a story is a dupe, the users rate it as such, and it gets removed automatically. You can even rate articles as inaccurate. Slashdot is the biggest piece of abandonware on the Internet, so why don't we all go to Digg and set up camp at the new epicenter for geek news on the net?

It's officially over for Slashdot
I've got karma to burn. It's officially over for Slashdot--Digg's new comment system is released. That's right, CmdrTaco has been promising a new comment system on Slashdot for years, and Digg has updated theirs in less than a year. I suggest we all go over there and start a whole new tech community.
Enjoy an AJAX threaded comment system with real-time ratings, in-place editing, friend flags, and more. What has Slashdot got? Why, they just got around to adding "tagging" for subscribers. Utterly lame. Slashcode is the biggest piece of abandonware on the net. -

Security (and reliability, and other features) been improving with every Microsoft operating system too. Of course when Apple does it the automobile excuses come out, whereas when Microsoft rightly points out that its operating systems are improving too, idiot Slashbots post ridiculous, karma-whoring logs of their previous marketing campaigns, which are totally meaningless to the discussion at hand, and what's more fools (especially Apple fanboy types) fall for it.

Hilarious...Having experience of TS officers, I know this level of stupidity is more than expected. What surprises me most is that TS actually pursued a complaint. 2. MP3 Toilet
Technically, it's not a stand alone MP3 player, but rather one that works with your toilet. This SD memory based player attaches to the wall above your toilet and includes a special receiver that goes under the toilet seat, how sanitary.

Re:Slashdot?From talking to friends
This amuses the hell out of me. None of my friends read slashdot; virtually none of them even know about it. I don't know the point of this post, maybe I'm just gloating. Re:Deceptive headlinewhy is it that since he doesnt agree with the general opinion of the website is he modded flamebait?
Why is that since you hold an unpopular opinion you have to adopt a victim mentality? Do you think that whining about being some downtrodden minority, on some nerd web page, is the way to highlight the 'merits' of your views? Yes- mod points are being misused to penalize people with different opinions. No one disagrees with this, but get the fuck over it; It's not going to change anytime soon.
It's just a web page; you're not being disenfranchised. Just go somewhere else. Shoo. Fuck off. Bye.

Maybe
As an contractor for "orange" it is certainly possible but it's a very big *if* which I don't think will happen any time soon. Apple would be just another OEM in a market which is already far too crowded. Most users won't be willing to fork over any cash for the Apple brand because there would be no advantage to it over a white-box PC. Also, Apple wouldn't have any control over the Operating System and would have to rely on the same Microsoft-giant-that-moves-to-slow for fixes and new features. I will say that Apple's software market does have some gems not availabel to the Windows world but even if Apple managed to lock this software to Apple hardware from within Windows, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot by not giving their product to the enormous Windows marketplace. Regardless, even in Microsoft's embedded PDA market where companies tightly control hardware and software, we are seeing a lot of problems. What makes Apple think that they'll be able to this pull off? I think we'll see OSX on Dell machines before we see Windows on Apple machines.

Now, I do admit I am a bit off on the fact myself and I do thank you for correcting me. I appologize. However it's evident that the Craigslist fee to post Housing Ads should put Craigslist directly responsible for the quality of the ads on Craigslist. For example, the job posting in NYC requires paying Craigslist fee, and that puts Craigslist directly responsible for ads violating "equal opportunity."
Further more, Chicago or not, it's the same service and there is no rule that prohibits anyone living abroad from looking for housing in Chicago even though posting ads in Chicago may be free. Therefore if Craigslist is charging fee for posting ads in NYC, the same quality control should apply to every housing posts in every city. -

Re:A browser with native BitTorrent
You can easily change the theme [in Opera], but some things are frustratingly un-customizable (in Firefox you can drag just about anything anyplace and expect it to do something).
As much as I hate Digg, people posting in http://www.digg.com/software/Opera_9.0_TP2_is_out have provided some of their Opera screenshots. If you can manage to read through Digg crap to find some, I think you'll find that your statement isn't completely correct; in Opera, it's incredibly easy to rearrange the UI. Just right-click on a toolbar, hit Customize and play. You can place any toolbar anywhere, and have any icon/function anywhere. Plus, Opera has a really nice keyboard/mouse gesture editor so you can assign any combination to any set of actions. -

For those on Rodgers, this will helpRead the discussion on digg about this. A lot of people are saying that BT is faster when they use encrypted data (links to the same article as here).
Obviously, this will work to a point. But, my school has taken this one step further. The admins block incomming access to every port. Thus, the only connections you can make a locally initiated connections. Net result: 2kb/s top speed, 0kb/s average speed. I've spent the last two years trying to get around this, to no avail.

Re:Works fine with OS X
You've got it backwards
;-)
OS X uses some OpenGL stuff; a lot of 2D compositing. It doesn't totally bury the system, however, and it can move a lot of that to software rendering as well; that's why it works just fine on my Powerbook with a GeforceFX 5200, 32 MB ram.
Vista, on the other hand, uses boatloads of 3D, everywhere. Lots of texturing. The main issue with Vista is not having enough graphics ram. For the full "Avalon" "experience", you'll need 256 MB in a 32-bit environment, and possibly more in a 64-bit environment. Fill rates will also be important, in order for you to keep your windows flying around the screen in 3D.
God knows why so much is needed; Project Looking Glass provides a similar display with far more modest requirements, and thats a JAVA window manager. Not to mention that Xorg is getting really, really close to alot of these things. Xgl is currently running with all kinds of interesting shader/geometry effects, and KDE's got the window manager refraction/reflection (take a look at the CrystalGL, the big cousin of Crystal, which does it in software).
Ultimately, Linux will get there, but the problem is integration; most of these features are avaliable on X, but few of them play nicely with OpenGL, and they often don't play well together. We'll have to see a big, combined push between the KDE 4 effort, GNOME's next generation Metacity, the freedesktop XGL/Xorg 7+ people, and NVIDIA/ATI. As I understand it, much of this is occuring now; but we probably won't see releases till near the time Vista is released, and we won't see proper integration into distributions till late 2006/early 2007.
The best part is, however, that once it DOES get into Linux, it'll run just fine on 32/64 MB cards, and most likely will degrade much more gracefully than Vista; there'll be a finer set of non-functional options, rather than 3/4 main settings.
I have no fear that we'll see plenty of desktop eye candy in the near future on Linux; this is mainly attributable to the freedesktop people, who have saved X with Xorg, a product that is making progress now after years and years of stagnation.
I'm much more worried about DirectX 10 (WGF 2.0). Will OpenGL keep up? I hope so, otherwise we'll see the few Linux/Mac gaming houses there are out there (in addition to Transgaming) fail completely as they become unable to port over Windows graphics features. NVIDIA, ATI and Apple seem to be keeping the OpenGL group moving, though. -

Dear Zonk / Cmdr Taco.
Would it be possible to rig up a filter that checks if stories are directly from the Digg front page? It seems silly for Slashdot to be syphoning all its news from Digg. I would have expected the more senior Slashdot to be ahead of Digg but, lately all the Slashdot stories are several hours old Digg stories.
