I can drag and arrange the tabs however I want. Opera has an inline find in page facility, mouse gestures, and a handy feature for paging through galleries where the images follow a simple incremental progression or have a 'next' or similar recognizable link in the page.

Mouse gestures for all cocoa apps (including Safari) can be done for free with Cocoa Gestures. I love it. Arranging tabs, along with tons of other features, can be done with Safari Extender or Saft, $10 each (buy both of them and that's still half the price of Opera). Inline finding in a page... try Cmd-F.

As for paging through galleries, that does sound nice and I can't think of a Safari equivilant. However it also sounds like I wouldn't have a need to use it most of the time and forget to use it the rest of the time.

When I say that I don't want things to open in a new window in Opera, I mean it, and it works. I have that option checked in Safari, but it still opens new windows all the time.

I completely agree, I'm the same way. Saft (link above) has excellent window management prefs, including forcing all windows into tabs in one window, or getting rid of the menu bar and going full screen, etc etc.

Oh, and provided that Opera maintains its key configurability, it'll definitely have a leg up there on Safari. (My outlook on that is mostly due to me wanting Opera-like keybindings in Safari. When I type 'Cmd-N', I want a new TAB, not a new window.

You can bind keys using ReKey (donationware) or the Keyboard Shortcuts tab in System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse. I actually have Cmd-N set to create new tab and Cmd-Shift-N for new window (which is normaly for new bookmark folder, so I bound that to Cmd-Ctrl-N because I never use the keyboard for making new bookmarks).

There are of course advantages to things being built into Opera rather than requiring 3rd party plugins like for Safari. They all fit in so well though that after I finish installing them (5 minutes of time lost... damn) they might as well be stock features. The plugin route is also cheaper than just buying Opera.

In the past, Samba 3 was available for Mandrake, but support for it was flaky.

As maintainer for Mandrake's samba packages, I take exception to that, considering 9.2 had samba-3.0.0 (granted, 3.0.0 had some isses) available in contrib, and parallel-installable, compiled against MIT kerberos-1.3.x, with mostly integrated smbldap-tools etc etc etc.

Anyway, packages that are 99% like those in 10.0 are also available on the samba mirrors, like:

Hopefully I will get around to follow-ups of some documentation I did for samba-2.2.x which I think helped bring some cool features to Mandrake users.

Finally, there are also some nice additions (IMHO) to openldap (but one or two minor bugs that need to be fixed still ...). Makes the whole LDAP+Samba PDC and/or NT domain migration almost painless ...

BTW, this post seems to insist on putting a space between the n and d in Mandrake in the URLs ... remove it if it makes it to the page ...

I didn't get a degree, but I did take the hard way of learning comp-sci. I spent years of my time studying the various texts and papers that students *should* be studying. Some people complain that, "well you can't be a *true* comp-sci professional because you didn't pay for this piece of paper." I just shake my head at their insecurity and offer to help them solve whatever their current problem is.

It's the 2.6 alsa drivers, pretty simple fix. 2.4 and some early versions of 2.6 doesn't have the bug.

Other than in video games, I am currently transcoding a Babylon 5 video from MPEG-2 to DivX (using Xvid) on my laptop. It is an Athlon64 3200+--the fastest laptop processor money can buy (well, strictly for video transcoding, the highest end Pentium IVs are actually slightly faster) and it takes about 6 hours for a 2hr movie, 3 hours for an episode. If I had a 20GHz Athlon64 it would still take forever.

One question, why does it take so long for your rig to convert MPEG2 to Xvid? I have an Athlon XP2000+ system running WinXP and using FlaskMPEG 0.6preview2 and the latest Xvid binaries from Nic, I get an average of 22FPS encoding rate. Considering film is 23.976FPS, I am getting almost realtime encoding speeds. Even doing a two-pass encode and adding the time it takes to do the audio afterwards (usually about 20mins per hour) would only make a 2 hour movie take a little over 5 hours or so.

Not trying to flame, just curious why your encoding speeds are so slow...

DataDino is a database management tool similar to Toad. It slices, it dices, it edits data and tables on the fly!

JGoodies produces an awesome tool for finding dead files that are eating up hard drive space.

Azureas is a BitTorrent client that works far better than even the Shadow client. (Anyone remember how Furi rocked the house before LimeWire muscled in?)

JBoss is an example of a J2EE server. If you don't know what that is, it's probably because you're not a web developer. J2EE technologies are running the high end web applications of today, both the visible and invisible ones.

Think Free is a great little Microsoft Office replacement in Java. (Sadly they haven't seem to have changed much since their initial release, but it's still good stuff.)

So on and so forth. Of course, if you want a little fun, go check out a few Java games like Wurm Online.

I wrote my own little Perl scripts using MP3::Info and MP3::ID3v1Tag. While you're at it, you may want to check out Apache::MP3 and my own pet project, TVDinner Streaming MP3 Server.

You could do this with 2.2.8a if your AD server allowed anonymous authentication. If not, you need 3.0.0.

I run a Mandrake 8.2 box in production as a mail server in an AD domain, all authentication is via winbind.

Yeah, of course old non-adware versions of the divX codec will still be available for a while, but the point is that there won't be any new non-adware versions except the ones you have to buy.

XviD is a great alternative, which looks just as good as DivX (About 5mb per minute gets you very good quality if encoded properly. 10mb per minute is near DVD quality.)

It's completely free and GPL'd, and it's also already very popular, by my estimates its the second most popular codec, behind DivX, for the (ilegal) online distribution of movies and TV shows, unlike Ogg Theora which is completely unheard of fringe experimental codec that no serious group has ever used for a release.

As for viewing their code. Last 2 jobs I would not be able to provide you any code for, naturally company confidential. And they've been difficult jobs, consuming most of my time.

First rule. There's always an exception to the rule. If I interviewed you and you couldn't produce any code, but had good reasons plus were able to hold a very technical conversation, then yes I might recommend you for hire.

Code written at home during this time has been trivial small things.

Even small coding projects work. If I see only 3 code classes, but the design behind them is brilliant, I'd hire you in a second. For example, here's a project I did for fun in only a few days. If you look at the code, you'll see very little there. But looking at the overall design, you'll find a tremendous power and flexibility. The amount of code doesn't matter. I always look for the quality.

But, I'm not that bitter. I have a good job, and learned a lot of neat stuff in school.

Good for you! I've already started getting calls from head-hunters again, so I don't think it will be too long before the market is a little easier to move around in.

It's more of a library than a toolkit per say, but its greatest advantage is that you can rip it apart and integrate it into any game you develop. Most "toolkits" fall down as soon as your game starts to break out of "the norm" (like most truly entertaining games).

Oh, and it works on all platforms, especially OSX. :-)

Here (195kB PNG) is a screenshot of Mandrake 9.1rc1 running Gnome with the Galaxy theme. I hae done almost no changes to Gnome (I don't usually use it), so this is pretty much how it looks currently out-the-box after changing to the Galaxy theme (which I assume will be enabled by default on rc2). The window decorations for KDE went in only a few days ago, wait till I update some stuff from cooker for a KDE screenshot.

My USB flash disk was detected automatically, just had to right-click on the desktop and check "removable" (in KDE an icon appears which you can just double-click). ACPI works (though I am not sure how much functionality my Thinkpad 600X supports). Note the ACPI is not enabled by default (acpi=off is in the default append for the bootloader) due to problems with desktops. Zeroconf works (ie over a crossover to a windows box I get a "auto-configuration"-compatible IP address and can resolve my own hostname via "dns"), but the gui tools need a bit more work (config only works during install currently), but my NIC does not support ifplugd, so I do not get automatic interface management.

I did make some changes to the fonts in Mozilla, which may have affected how Galeon displays.

We just hope that freetype-2.1.4 will be out in time to make it, since the maintainer will not agree to shipping CVS versions (which Redhat seems happy with, even with glibc to the point of breaking things like winbind - for those of you who think Mandrake is not stable).

And you know, that is actually very few people on Windows...

Step 2. Visit http://www.datadino.com and click on "Webstart Now!".

Step 3. Right click and save Meat Fighter. Find where you saved the JAR file and double click.

Step 5. Visit jGoodies and try their wide variety of products.

If you are under Linux, I'm afraid the games probably won't perform well. (Little issue with getting X to be configured to handle high speed direct-framebuffer graphics). However, DataDino should work, although you may need to get the installer instead of using the super-cool WebStart link (Mozilla problem only!). If you don't have a database to use, visit the "Supported Databases" page and download the test HSQLDB database.

The plain and simple fact is that Java is fighting two issues:

1. Poorly written apps that give all Java apps a bad name. (For example, "genius" A decides to load a table before releasing the event thread. Table takes 5 minutes to load and user gets annoyed. The solution would have been to load the table in a separate thread so that the user can see and interact with the table items as they are being loaded.)

2. Perceived performance vs. actual performance. People see Swing and the default look and feel and instantly "feel" that the app is slower than windows. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In all reality, it is probably running faster than the Windows app, it just doesn't seem right. This is caused by the Java L&F being way too "flat". Your brain doesn't quite connect the buttons and other objects as being solid objects to be manipulated.

The problem with Ogg Tarkin it is still pretty much an experiment, using techniques which is way ahead of its time. 3d wavelets haven't been heard of in any other standard which are under development.

XviD, however, exists today. It is a fully GPL'ed MPEG4 codec. However, it cannot exist legally in any form other than an experiment because the MPEG4 license still has to be paid for in order to use XviD. XviD, like LAME, will mostly exist as CVS sourcecodes under guise as an experiment, with many rogue sites around the world providing binaries (usually with automated daily compiling).

Personally, I wouldn't count on the quality of VP4 being anything earthshattering. Tests of VP3 quite clearly shows that it is behind DivX3, DivX4 and XviD in terms of quality, so something has to really shape up. This might probably be due to a lack of 2-pass VBR encoding feature in VP3. Meanwhile I will just continue to encode my rips in XviD, encode the audio with Vorbis and mux them together into an Ogg container. If VP4 or VP5 really turns out to be good enough, I would probably try to find a way to mux that video stream into the Ogg container too.

Duke Nukes Stuff. Before the code was VSync locked (and timing locked) it ran 400 FPS! Say what you will, but Sun has come through this time. See Java Gaming for more info.

I have the ability to search the database for a particular tune, save playlists, save favorites, recommend titles to others, etc. It's pretty stable, so if you're interested, pop me an email here: dcarnage at spookyworld.dnsalias.com.

If I steal Shoeboy's credit card number (assuming she actually had one) by hacking into shoeboy.com (assuming there was actually something there to hack into), and use it to purchase an imperial ton of grits (the hot kind, naturally), it is the merchant who sold me the grits that will be out of pocket when the theft is discovered. The credit card company checks with the cardholder, and if the cardholder denies having purchased the items in question, the grits merchant doesn't get paid. Shoeboy wouldn't lose a dime.

This puts the onus on the merchant to verify that they are dealing with a legitimate customer, which is why many online companies won't ship to addresses not registered with the card company, especially when dealing with a first-time customer.

So, Shoeboy's statement, "Anyone who buys anything online is a fucking moron", might be applied to merchants who sell things online - or more to the point, their investors! - but not to cardholders. Someone buying something online with a credit card is actually being pretty smart. The only downside when your card or card number is stolen tends to be minor inconvenience.

In addition, if you're not happy with a product, and the merchant doesn't want to give you your money back, within reason, card companies will refund your money and stiff the merchant. I've had that happen when purchasing telephony hardware from a company that went out of business right after shipping my product - the company couldn't be reached for support, so I called Amex and they credited me the money.

Now, with Shoeboy, you can never really tell whether she's trolling or not, so maybe she already knows all this. But I post this purely out of the altruistic knowledge that I am contributing to the free and pure flow of e-commerce. Bezos would thank me, if his company weren't tanking...

Not going to happen. Companies can tell you that they "employ a security team" or that they "have been audited by a third party" or that the software the run has had "no remote exploits in 3 years."
It means nothing. How can a company prove that it didn't misconfigure anything?
How can they be sure that their in house developed project has any security at all.
How can they verify that the well camoflaged back door the sysadmin put in to make his job easier won't get found? How do they even know it's there?
How do get the CTO and Director of IT (both of whom threatened to fire you if you didn't give them domain admin permissions) to lock their workstations?

There's always in house auditing, but do you trust a team that reports directly to the half witted manager who designed the network? You shouldn't.
If nothing else, how do you know that the system is as secure as the company says it is? You don't.

The final answer is that there is no good way to trust an online merchant if you can't inspect their setup yourself.

And since you can't do that, you can't trust them at all.
