Re:Who buys them?
I feel your pain. My wife just purchased $200 worth of "essential oils" to help our kids with their ADHD. I'm about ready to kill her. "Alternative medicine" is a HUGE money maker. A lot of these bogus "remedies" get sold right next to actual, effective treatments and, often at higher prices. People think "you get what you pay for" and take the garbage. It kills me to see people do this.
James Randi had a wonderful TED talk about homeopathy quite a few years back. It's very entertaining and he does a demonstration similar to the one you did for your wife. For all the other people out there who don't know a lot about homeopathy or why it's a problem, it's worth a watch.

Re:No, it isn't.
As a generalization, there's some truth to this, but it's not as clear cut as all that. Some vegetarians are so because they have personal qualms about eating animals or eat a vegetarian diet because of their religion. Those are the best vegetarians to study. They are not as prone to nutrition fads that encourage them to eat or drink 20x normal amounts of specific foods (e.g. http://www.drugstore.com/natures-answer-sambucus-black-elder-berry-extract-super-concentrated/qxp290049).

Hasn't brushing/flossing been perfected?
Between my Dr. Barman's Dental Woodsticks and my Reach Flosser I kinda doubt brushing everything at once will be that big an improvement. How big an imposition is the usual oral care rigmarole? Oh noes, the Phillips Sonicare takes a whopping two minutes to do its thing!

Re:Remote thermo microwave oven
I have one. It's basically a bedroom issue vibrator with silicone plastic legs attached. It rotates around the pot stirring it. Great when you want to boil cream for an hour.

Re:This is an interesting development, but...
Interesting rumour. I'm slightly interested to know what your basis for this assertion is
Half a dozen of my friends figured this out the hard way. Their doctors all traced it back to drug interactions between antibiotics in the -cycline family (minocycline, tetracycline, etc.) and their low-dose oral contraceptive pills. But since anecdotes aren't proof, I spent about five minutes Googling:
Reference 1
Reference 2
Reference 3 (about 3/4 down the page)
Reference 4
Reference 5
Many sources I found note that it is difficult to conduct formal research in this area because women don't want to take antibiotics as part of a study and risk getting pregnant. It is difficult to prove what happens, but my friends have traced it back and told me what their doctors said. I hope sexually active readers hear this and protect themselves. -
Re:Self Deception and bias
After typing "homeopathy" in the search box on drugstore.com, I found this.
It appears to be a homeopathic remedy for head lice. The remedy is administered on your head and is ingested by the lice. Immediately, I was intrigued. How would a homeopathic remedy kill head lice? What kind of homeopathic remedy would kill things?
I clicked on the "ingredients" tab which lists one active ingredient: sodium chloride (table salt) in a 1X dilution (10% dilution). In other words, brine. Not even an extremely dilute brine.
This brine costs $20 and comes with a free comb.
So I clicked on the "review" tab and found some satisfied customers:
[My daughter got lice, and] in one treatment - GOODBYE disgusting LICE! My daughter's head even had live lice in it along with nits (eggs) - and this product killed them all. Of course I had to pick out nits for a week...
This reviewer picked out nits from her daughter's hair, for a week straight. But she doesn't think that's what reduced the lice population. No. It was the brine that did it.
This is worth every penny.
Brine is worth every penny if you pay about 5 pennies for a gallon.

Re:HehThat warning only appears on the special anti-viral Kleenex. Anti viral tissues, cool. You wouldn't want your garbage can to start sneezing in your face...
(amazed at the inventiveness of the marketing dept. these days) -
Re:Heh
That warning only appears on the special anti-viral Kleenex. The idea is that you should only use it to blow your nose, rather than eating the Kleenex in an attempt to fight off a viral infection, which wouldn't work and might be harmful.
If you look at the active ingredients (Citric Acid (7.51%) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (2.02%)) you'll notice that the average bottle of shampoo contains the exact same active ingredients.
So basically they're telling you not to eat soap, and that there is a Federal law out there somewhere that says "don't eat soap!"
Hopefully there isn't a law that says "don't eat paste or crayons" otherwise a good percentage of preschoolers are in violation.
Mmm, paste! -
Re:This picture puts all in perspective
I agree that ink cartridges are too expensive and that gasoline is too cheap. But comparing the two is stupid. Printer ink is a complicated formulation, is used in very small quantities, and has to be packaged in a cartridge that is not only a container, but also a print head. Gasoline is just a commodity item, except for minor variations in additives.
Next, you'll be complaining that ordinary aspirin costs $242 a pound!

Next time...Keep a can of AJAX on your desk. The next time some clueless moron comes up and says "I want AJAX with my web apps", grab the can, walk over to his desk, and pour some on his monitor. Then, and this is key, laugh derisively. That should cure at least one fucktard. After two or three people get AJAX with their webapps, problem solved.
Or, tell them that AJAX is out, and LART is in. When they come asking for LART, you'll know what to do.

Re:DIY Feet
After my PowerBook's rubber feet fell off, I picked up some replacements at the local Ace Hardware. As far as keeping it cool, I've been keeping a few of these cold compresses in rotation from the freezer. It's the perfect size for a 12 inch laptop.

my 2 cents worth
When I was living with a friend of mine (he's married now and this was about three years or more ago) he had two Ionic Breeze filters. I can personally vouch that these things are totally useless. It was a two bedroom apartment and there was always dust, even with these things running 24/7. We would clean them and sure enough the blades inside were black with filth, but neither of us ever noticed a signifigant reduction in the dust in the apartment. Later after he got married and I got my own place (the one I have now) I bought a Honeywell from drugstore.com (you can see it here: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=83
6 08&catid=46773&trx=GFI-0-PLP&trxp1=46773&trxp2=836 08&trxp3=1&trxp4=1&btrx=BUY-GFI-0-PLP). I had another Honeywell in a small boarding house room with two cats years before, and even with the two cats and the litter box and myself people always commented how they could not smell anything unpleasant. So it was because of this experience that I returned to the Honeywell brand. It is an awesome air purifier and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to seriously control the room dust. As for the computer dust problem I don't have much to share. I just keep my case and PC components clean and run the Honeywell as much as possible. Keeping myself and the apartment clean also helps. :) I want to thank all of you for the great tips. I'm going to get my tower up off the floor and I got a couple boxes of Swiffer pads so I'm going to try that filter idea. As for the vacuum I want to share a story on that...a friend of mine vacummed the inside of his case one time and then his computer wouldn't start. Come to find out he'd sucked up a couple jumpers off the mobo. So I would be leary of using a vacuum inside the case. - dc -

Anusol - The Miracle Worker
Hello, my name is Robert Malda, some of you may know me as the founder of Slashdot, a popular nerd, geek, and loner website. After a hard day of doing nothing in my parent's basement, I like to relax in my parent's attic with my boyfriend Micheal. Sometimes things gets a little rough after we exchange some love and my bottom can get a little sore. That is why I use Anusol to remedity my sore anus. Anusol is not just for after sex use, it also helps me with my piles, and haemorrhoids. It makes sure my bum is always ready when Micheal is. So if you find that your in need of a quick and sure fix for your butt, Anusol is you one stop product.

Bombarding? Bismuth?
Oh man, seeing those two words together brings back a bad memory. I had been drinking really heavily one night, see? (Well, heavily for a nerd). And I was feeling pretty drunk and I thought I was going to toss my cookies bad. But there were some really sexy girls at this party and I didn't want to leave. So in my drunken state I drank some of this cheap Pepto-Bismol knockoff called Pink Bismuth, thinking it would settle my tummy. So I go back out to the main room and party like nothing happened and I'm this cool guy who can hold his liquor. Anyhow, pow! the dancing and all just was too much and I started puking all over the place. I dropped to my knees and started puking my guts out all over the coffee table. And since I had drank the Pink Bismuth not too long ago, my puke was coming out pink. I was "bombarding" the coffee table with "Bismuth atoms" -- get it?
Needless to say, none of this impressed those babes (in a positive way, at least) and I went home alone once again...

Old fashioned economics apply
Same way Gillette and Shick do. Give away the razor and sell people the blades. In software, sell the support (or the updates, or whatever).
That isn't the way Gillette and Schick do it.
In fact, you have to pay $14 for the Gillette M3 Power razor. Here are some prices: http://www.drugstore.com/templates/stdplist/defaul t.asp?catid=1312&cmbProdBrandFilter=7744&brand=774 4
The Schick razors also aren't cheap: http://www.drugstore.com/templates/stdplist/defaul t.asp?catid=1312&cmbProdBrandFilter=7805&trx=BS-78 05&trxp1=HP&trxp2=0&trxp3=1312&brand=7805; the Schick Quattro razor costs $8.31.
Last time I checked, $14 and $8.31 aren't "free" in any sense of the word.
Imagine that: You have to pay more for a stupid razor than for software. -

Solutions for Pain and Numbness
The pain and numbness in your hand are definitely symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome or repetitive stress injury. I'm 20 and I suffer the same thing.
Fortunately, there are solutions to relieve the symptoms.
First, I use a wrist brace/splint from Futuro. You can buy one from drugstore.com, though I got mine from the pharmacy or health/wellness department of Zellers. They range in price from $16 to $25, depending on where you buy it from and what country you live in. Definitely well worth it, though.
As well, try and get outside more. I admit I'm not the best at this, but I do take the dog for regular walks every day and try and do other outdoor chores.
You could also try lifting some five pound dumb bells and doing regular exercises for your wrists that way.
Hope this helps,
Doug -

Re:Sun probably *can't*I seriously doubt they own all the code in the Java codebase.
Really? What is your indication they don't? I'm unaware of any copyrights/patents to the Sun Java code outside of Sun.
And yeah, if IBM is actually prodding Sun to open up Java source while they actually own the rights that prevent Sun from doing so, and Sun can't even mention that because of the license, that would be somewhat ironic, no? I guess some vestiges of the old IBM live on...

Re:Common Word Trade Marks
1) Office and suite are both common terms. That's like saying it is new and original if someone puts a collar on a dog and sells it as "Dog Collar". The two terms would not have been used together before the invention of the "dog collar", but that doesn't make "Dog Collar" an innovative name.
2) My father worked at Kimberly Clark (coincidentally enough, in the diaper plant in Memphis). I've heard it all hundreds of times. Trust me on the Kleenex thing. Huggies are in the Kleenex line. However, unlike Microsoft, K-C doesn't just throw any generic word out as the title of it's products. And therefore acheives good brand recognition. It would dilute the brand name for them to make a big deal about Huggies actually being "Kimberly Clark Kleenex Huggies Diapers". And since they chose good brand names for their products, they don't have to.
I am not the one who tried to compare "Kleenex" to "office suite". They are not at all the same.

Re:nothing new here
Self recharging? Better than that! If you factor in the vibrations of the women themselves you could theoretically power a small city.
Don't know why parent was modded as troll, though. Offtopic maybe, but really not trolling. Chicks dig vibrators...ever see that Sex in the City episode about the rabbit vibrator one of the women gets addicted to? Funnily enough, drugstore.com sells it. I like the admonition, "Do not use on unexplained calf pain". Yeah, I don't think that's where it's going to be used... -
