7 Years and Running...
7 years now. That's how long it's been since I've purchased anything from Amazon.
7 years Jeff. 7 years of lost revenue that has gone to other companies because of your stubborn insistence on doing crap like this.
My boycott shall continue.
May I suggest some of Amazon's competition?

Re:HehThere are more, though mostly driveless, Alphas on eBay.
Heck, looks like there is an exact same modeled unit for sale for the next 4 days from the same people.

HehIn the next message, Matt R offers to buy one on EBay but it looks like he got sniped. (BTW, "current high bidder" has the best EBay nick I've ever seen.)
I wish them luck, but this has to give pause to anyone who wants to place a heavy bet on the continued availability of OpenBSD/Alpha -- if it can get wiped out because they can't get a specific piece of legacy hardware to fit Theo's rack!

Proxima 944+? Unobtanium.
According to this link the Proxima Ovation 944+ is 8 grand new. Not that anyone would pay that, right? Well...
None are listed on eBay.
Finished auctions on eBay list at about 300. That's fine, but try to find one!
Kind of eliminates the ability to do this project, doesn't it?
I don't understand why all of these DIY projects have to use some amount of unobtainium. Why not price out some NEW parts, ones that are currently on the market? Leave it as an exercise for the reader to find used or discounted products.
Only then can you make a fair assessment of whether or not one of these projects is "do-able."
I would love to see some names / brands of recommended overhead projection panels - but unfortunately, THAT is left up to the reader. I thought making these recommendations was a key part of a DIY article. After all, look at Woodworking magazine or any other DIY magazine - they all list the parts, the specs of the parts, and typically, a price or two with each. -
Solutions under $100I did a little thinking and came up with this.
Seriously, I used to be into doing stuff with computers because I COULD. It was a great experience to play with Linux and BSD on lots of crappy, obsolete systems and would encourage all high school and early-college aged kids to do so (while making time for socialization).
Now I have access to all the exotic UNIX hardware I could ever care to use. I threw out everything, got a powerbook and have never been happier.
When I want to have fun tinkering, I code. I think people will get more out of programming than simply amassing a ton of hardware and installing operating systems on them (watching console messages scroll by does not make you smart). (Which is not to say that you shouldn't LEARN how to do that stuff, but having a dozen workstations at home when 1 or 2 would do serves no real purpose. No Timmy, you do not need separate dns and mail servers for timmy.com)

Re:D&D Nostaligia Can't Be Banked Upon
I just checked ebay, and here's an auction with 5 hours to go, the high bid is $14.50 for a First Edition DM Guide and 13 modules.
Now that's just sad...
Maybe some people here will follow the link and bid but otherwise, this is typical of the depreciation of this material, which is still 100% useful -- no it's not my auction. I'd rather give my stuff away to someone in the neighborhood than put it up for auction at a fraction of what I paid for it. At that price it's almost not worth the trouble to pack and mail it. Seems to be clear evidence that AD&D is definitely dead. -

I think it's clear that the busines potential of hijacking biometrics -- which are un-protectable and irreplaceable -- makes their compromise pretty inevitable.
Proof positive of this is that you can already buy commercial advertising space in people's fingerprints on eBay. -
Raw number of titles
Nintendo is no longer producing the Game Boy or GB Color, nor are they making games for it.
Nintendo is still producing the GBA SP, which is officially compatible with 99 percent of GB and GBC games sold at independent stores and other secondary markets. How many titles is PSP 1.52 compatible with?

Re:Get a good overview
My set on eBay

SBC, lying again about high speed DSLSBC trots this out whenever they want something from regulatory authorities. But they don't actually install it.
Read this 1999 article about SBC's 'Project Pronto'. " According to SBC, when the expanded deployment program is completed [in three years] customers will be able to receive minimum downstream connection speedsof 1.5 megabits per second, with more than 60 percent eligible to receive guaranteed speeds of 6 megabits a second." Right.
SBC's new "Project Lightspeed" isn't about the Internet at all. It's just cable TV, implemented using Windows Media 9 over DSL using Scientific-Atlanta set-top boxes. The system doesn't use the Internet at all. It has its own infrastructure, which is a Microsoft-implemented multicast implementation.
It's not about Internet access at all. All you can get is what they want to send you. Lightspeed will block access to Internet video.

Re:Hangs head in shame...
I read the article and actually submitted a story to
/. for posting. I guess someone else beat me to it. :-)
So if all that fantasy world money is then sold by grey "secondary market" companies (usually in auctions on Ebay) for real-world money then gamers get an easy way to advance and sellers roll in some big dough.
Pure supply and demand capitalism at its finest. So is there anything wrong with that?
Well, of course there is. Aside from the obvious moral and ethical issues, it hurts honest gamers who want to play an honest game.
By making it so cheap for the lazy gamer to "level up", who is going to want to try to advance the normal way? As someone with an old-fashioned work ethic, this would kill any satisfaction I would have in playing online. So, just so I can keep up with the Jones, I need to spend even more money after shelling out $50 for the game itself plus $10 or $15 a month for subscription fees?
Do a search on Ebay and see how cheap it is:
http://search.ebay.com/city-of-heroes and http://search.ebay.com/lineage-ii
The sellers usually justify by saying that they are not selling the gold pieces themselves, just the "time and effort" to collect them.
Well maybe it's okay if you were one person who played through and through and now wants to get a little something for your troubles for the benefit of newcomers.
But that's a far cry from organized sweatshops where they pay their "employees" pennies per hour to play for hours on end, and then pocket almost all the real money for themselves. "Time and effort" my ass.

Deja vu
"Crippled" cell phones seems to be common.
For example I bought a LG 5450 from Telus, but Telus blocks downloading tones/wallpapers off the net, forcing users to download off Telus website only.
When I asked about the phone-to-PC data cable, the vendor said it didnt exist, when in fact it does
Today, I use Bitpim to download/upload photos, ringtones, you name it, using this guide. Enjoy! -
Less attention to advertised mainstream hardware -
and more attention to the little mom'n'pop hardware that is great. It will not be great for mainstreem hardware to be the sole offer, because it often undersells smaller competitors to the point of harming customers and the future innovations. It's the little man, down to the worker at his desk, that is relied for perfecting his stroke on the picture. All the painters of highest regard were somewhat sloppy in their day, and yet their "art" has endured to show forth a different interpretation of things that it continues in its own merit onto others. Somtimes you need to invest in bad hardware to allow a small company exist long enough to produce its most inspired product. I am not saying its a bad product or componay, although market reach implies such, yet consider SoftField Tech and its Linux-only PDAs. Its next release of PDAs will be verry good, but that will never happen unless people buy the already existing outdated hardware.
I am waiting for VA Software to re-enter the hardware market; and that I will to, every day. Slashdot is a great post of VA. It needs to be said, the VA hardware was a great enterprise that I am said to see fade away just because people were finding it difficult as a VAR. Somtimes, image is the only solution you can offer on a product that passes your way and that is the secret of QA. -
It looks like somthing Phrack magazine warrants.
If the screen was smaller, lower power consumption, backlit grayscale, waterproof, durable, with a dialpad and external IO headers all over the enclosure; in other words there needs to be a computer built into a Natural (Microsoft?) keyboard with a screen in the middle and has solid-state storage. I'm not thinking of a Frogpad, but somthing that makes sense as a portable workstation for a technical support agent. This computer looks like what I would need, but the screen is too large. Uptime depends on lower power consumption and not just software you know. I wouldn't buy it, given that I already own two Netpliane I-opener devices, a ePods One tablet, a SonicBlue Pro Gear 1040LX, and the recent M10 Linux PDA and previous Agenda VR3 PDA from SoftField Tech.

Re:Well..
Resellerratings allows you to search for specific products with S&H costs and vendor rating
if you enter your zip. No registration required, and they list a large number
of vendors including newegg, zipzoomfly and monarchcomputer. They also have a
neat hot deals feature on their home page (e.g. they featured a 200GB ATA Maxtor
dive for $69.99 including S&H from outpost.com a few days ago).
For the main post:
The forums on anandtech can also give you pointers on good deals; the site also has pretty good reviews for computer hardware.
If you like modding and overclocking, check this discussion and list at xtremesystems.org. xtemesystems also has a wealth of information on modding and overclocking, and the people there are very friendly and helpful.
Amazon is good for movies and bestselling books, but not for much else.
Bookpool has great prices for tech books. Also, ebay sellers sell international editions of tech books for a fraction of the price of US editions.
Finally, if you are not in a hurry to buy stuff, wait until Thanksgiving; nothing can beat Thanksgiving Day deals (both online and retail). -

eBay an older GSM phone
I gave my wife an Ericsson T28 and it's a great little phone. Good voice quality, GSM triband, very small. And it's only $20-$40 unlocked. We use it with a prepaid GSM SIM so we only pay for minutes we use.

Nokia 8290
IMHO the best cell phone ever made. I keep an extra on hand in case I break mine and can't find a new one (they're cheap now).
I think they can only be found on ebay at this point, but the size, speed and feature set for people wanting just a phone can't be beat. -

Re:When did Greenpeace become anti-energy
I swear, I think Greenpeace is more concerned about making sure nobody builds any new powerplants than they are about protecting the environment.
Actually, they do both. From Wikipedia
Greenpeace's goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity.

Tape
Unless you can afford to backup to off site spindles (and few small businesses can,) off site tape is still the way to go.
Older DLT Drives seem to be the best value right now, but if you need more capacity you could always go with Super DLT or LTO.

Re:So OSS-Developers should work unpayed for eBay?
Hi Rosco,
It's not so much that there are other auction sites using eBay's backend but rather around 1500 applications of various sorts that provide services to eBay buyers and/or sellers. To get a sense of what's available, head over to the Solutions Directory for a list.
Cheers,
Bruce. -
Re:eBay has it's share...For an ongoing German eBay scam, see the closed auctions by "soerenlebt": http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFee
d back&userid=soerenlebt. (Feedback from buyers is in German)I was about to buy something from them because it was so cheap, but got suspicious because they had no feedback, were selling quite a number of expensive items - audio equipment and expensive wristwatches - , the auctions all looked different and photos were quite obviously not by the same person. But others did buy from him and after some time, the "Money cashed, no product, no replies to e-mails" negative feedback started to roll in.

Re:eBay will fail unless it...
I was looking at airport cards for an old mac earlier today. One guy seemed to have a fairly good "buy it now" price -- about the going rate. Except S&H in the US was $28. From San Diego! USPS priority mail would be what, $5? It's obviously a gimmick to get bidders who forget to make sure the seller's mailing charges are in the realm of sanity. Fucking ebayers. 90% Cheats and louts.

Re:Maybe eBay will finally start policing it's ownDon't just complain about it here. Tell eBay about it!
If everyone commenting in this article took 15 minutes to report all the listing policy violations they found, that would send a message to them.
I send about 15 or 20 reports a month. Don't know how many of them get taken down though. My latest report decided he was going to charge $250 shipping for his LCD monitor. But he'll take $20 if you pick it up. What a deal!

Re:On Stealing...
A software company can't afford to hire a development staff, and they're too poor to afford development software / education anyway. So they just make a copy of some open source program and sell it en masse on-line.
Seems pretty similar to me. -

Re:Dont laugh, you could have this problem too! That doesn't mean that there will be software that runs on future computers that can decode jpeg. The average computer user won't be a coder that easily whip up a jpeg reader in F++ or F#.
True. But unless the open source movement gets completely massacred, the average computer user will be able to download something from the web that will display JPEGs.
As for the Wordstar file, what if the only remaining copy is electronic and on 5.25" floppy disk?
Well, the first thing you do is fire your records staff for gross negligence. (Preferably, fire them from a cannon.) Then, you make a backup copy. If this pertains to a legal issue, you have the backup made by a firm specializing in older media; this provides both expertise and witnesses. If a key piece of evidence exists only as a file on rewritable media, somebody has majorly screwed up, and it's probably not legally admissible. (IANAL)
From a technical viewpoint, however, Windows 5.25" isn't a major problem. My current 3GHz home desktop has a 5.25" drive, and they're easy to pick up on E-Bay. I've also picked up the means to deal with Orb, Jaz, LS240, Bernouili, and various SyQuest media over the years. Now, if your file is on an eight inch floppy disk, that's a larger challenge. Or if you're trying to get things off of some of even more obscure stuff, like a Mac formatted IOmega Floptical disk.
Courts and lawyers aren't as computer savvy as we are.
Depends on the laywer and on the court. Remember, the sterotypical lawyers are bastards, not morons.
