Of breast and geek
I sense a great disturbance in the force, as a result of this, as though a million kittens cried out at once and then were silenced.
(Or whatever the hell the actual quote is. It's early.)

Look - Sony and Tubbs!
Checkout the guys in the second picture!
Here!
Didn't know Sony and Tubbs appeared in Battlestar Galactica, fashionable as ever of course :-) -
Re:$40000!!!
$40000, why would anyone spend that much money on something like that? You'd have to have something wrong with you to spend that amount of money...
You will find, that the most expensive item starts at more than twice that. The original George Reeves Superman costume starts at $90,000.00
Is it worth that much? Not to me, but somebody might be prepared to spend that. Why is that wrong? If you can afford it and want to own a piece of film history.

from the breast-and-wig dept.
For those curious as to what was meant by the subtitle
from the breast-and-wig dept.
I think the editors were busy ogling "Breast appliances and wig" worn by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos in X-Men. More about the item for those not feeling like checking out a link for breast appliances:
Blue latex breast appliances (each signed on the inside in gold by the actress), and a short-haired red wig, worn by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos as Mystique. $500 - $1,000 [estimated sale price]
I guess that's perfect for that semi-stalkerish yet absolutely cool amongst geeks feeling. -
Who would pay USD$40,000 for...
Some of Scotty's old clothes?? I mean, seriously, we all know that man has some glandular problems! I hope they atleast give it a thorough washing.

Yeah, I know.. I mean, everyone on slashdot hates patents.. They're so quick to judge, but I don't think they've even seen this one.

Stop Complaining
Stop complaining and join the fun. There's loads of patents to be found at reasonable prices
Buy a few and start sending out those threating letter yourself. Easy money.

Re:Not much point
I'm not sure he's the one that missed the point.. A 486 has serial ports too.
1 used 486 = $0 to $25
1 home made null modem cable = ~$2
For about the same price, the 486 is also capable of functioning as an X terminal with sound, etc, like he said. -

Cheaper buys for desperate people.
The article mentions, " If you're desperate, you can probably use an old laptop!" Net4521 price is mo than $200. 486 Laptop on Ebay goes for less than $50. With a little work you can use any CF as a HD storage, but you might as well use the disk that comes with the laptop. Combine this with a $40 worth of pcimcia ethernet and wifi cards and you have something that will work for $100 or so. If you use Debian as the OS, you can ssh into it and apt-get upgrade it to keep it far more secure than any dinky off the shelf box. If you want a switch to go along with it, stick a $20 switch on it, but it would be easier to just wifi into it. The article is a great guide to building one of these things, even for desperate people tempted to buy a $60 access point with software you don't know or control.

Get a Patriot 1You want a Patriot 1 from AMREL. It meets MIL-STD 810F, which is an operating from 0C to 45C. Their extremely tough laptops. Not cheap, however, and not easy to get. But they're the best. A Panasonic Toughbook might work. They're not cheap either.
As far as TCO goes, you might just be better off buying 10 or 12 cheap Thinkpads from ebay. Get all the same (or close) model numbers. When one dies, pop out the hard drive and put it in another one. Or keep an OS image on a PC somewhere and load up the "new" laptop that way. Or image them all at the same time and keep your personal stuff on a network someplace. I'm not sure what exactly you need the portable for.
BTW, you can get cheap Toughbooks on ebay as well, as long as you don't mind running a slower processor.

Re:Usefull for a small inde band.
Do a Google search for CD Duplicator.
You can get a brand-new autoloading CD Duplicator (either attached to your PC or standalone) for $1500. It will also print and attach the labels.
You can probably find something used on eBay.
It seems to me that $1500 - $2000 is a worthwhile investment if it 1) avoids pissed off fans whose CDs won't play because of errors caused doing this by hand, 2) saves hours wasted in front of a PC, and 3) gives a pro-quality image to the band. -
A better look at the box front.

Re:Untapped Market?I just noticed you wanted a $500 machine. The ancestors of the U101 are the Sony PCG-U1 and PCG-U3. U1s are available on eBay for $700 (recent completed eBay auction), which is a bit better than the $1500-$1700 importer price for the U101. The U1 and U3 are Transmeta machines and have smaller screens than the U101.

Re:Quick Review of SoundTrack (as used with FCP 4)
I'd be interested in seeing your movie, or in hearing the soundtrack.
A good music theory book is Tonal Harmony by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne. (and older editions are cheap!) It's an undergrad-level text, but assumes no real prior knowledge of music. I think most schools use it over several semesters (my "borderline conservatory" undergrad music program took four semesters to go through the book, while augmenting it with acoustics, formal analysis, jazz theory, and more post-tonal theory), but you can pick and choose what you're interested in after the first few chapters.
If you're more interested in form than in harmony, there are probably better books, but most will presuppose knowledge similar to that contained in the Kostka/Payne book. One good book about form (not for the faint-of-heart) is Schoenberg's Structural Functions of Harmony.

Hasbro made a PC versionIn 1998, Hasbro Interactive made a version for the PC. I only played it a couple times, but it was a fairly decent game. The box says you can play online at zone.com. Oddly enough, there are 32 players online right now, so you might be able to find a match.
Looks like you can buy a copy on ebay for about US$10.

Re:Let the bidding beginHere's a guy who seems to think his is worth at least $85. But it has an 8 GB hard drive which is probably worth 40 bucks by itself. Still, no bids.
This guy is selling WordPerfect for the NextStep. The bidding's already up to $20, with several days to go yet. That's more than you'd pay for a recent version of WordPerfect Office!

Sprint PCS
You don't have to get the expensive unlimited plan to use the Sprint PCS Vision data service. I use it all the time with my laptop and don't pay anything extra (other than the cost of unlimited wireless web).
I use a cable that I bought on Ebay. Sprint does not sell these cables anymore and want you to use a PC Card with the unlimited plan.
The speed varies depending on reception. Sometimes it will drop to 14.4k speeds but it can be about 1.5x as fast as 56k. On average I will get speeds comparable to 33.6k.
I've been using it for about 6 months not and it has been completely trouble free and very reliable (for wireless). Check out SprintUsers.com. -
Re:When I can track my own stolen car
Try this...
1. Get your ham license
2. install an APRS node in your car/truck/whatever
You need a TinyTrak, a radio, and a GPS, don't forget cable, ant, etc. You also need an igate (APRS internet gateway) in your area.
On low power the radio should go for MANY days sending GPS data when powered from the boat/car/etc. If your boat/car/etc goes missing, do a search online @ www.findu.com, call the police, and tell them where your boat/car/etc is. Using the scanner you are sure to aquire as a ham, listen to the police find your boat/car/whatever -

Ways to get Thinkpads for cheap1. Find an IBM employee. They can give you access to the "friends and family" store. Sometimes the discounts are amazing.
2. Become a stockholder. Stockholders also get access to discounts.
3. eBay. The IBM store on eBay has some sweet deals.
If you save enough money you can go out and buy a cheap iBook as well. Have the best of both worlds.

IBM store on eBayIBM has an eBay store, where they sell LOTS of laptops.
You said you like their laptops, but they are expensive, so you might want to check it out. They sell both new and factory refurbished stuff there.

Even better: Handheld portable scanner
HP made this scanner called the Capshare which did auto stitching of pages and could hold about 100 1-bit text pages in memory. They came out with a color model as well. Unfortunately, they stopped making them in 1999 or 2000. Retail on them was about $500, but were going for $200-$300 on clearance at the end. Now, they sell for $500+ on eBay.com.

Want an IBM Model M?
Apparently you can find them for sale, albeit in limited quantities, here (as well as on eBay, natch).
There's a site all about the thing at www.modelm.org, but I can't get to the server right now, so here's a Google cache instead. -
Here's this for a thought...
Your personal information would be handed to law enforcement in the event an alleged "crime" has been committed. If you sell items on eBay and don't screw over a bunch of people, then you're more than likely going to have your private information nested in the depths of their Oracle database.
If you sell your items, take the money, and refuse to ship - you've committed a crime! I would certainly hope that your ass would eventually be found in a cold jail cell thinking that an anonomous entity such as your "eBay account name" was sufficient protection for a livid buyer find out who you are.
Your personal information on eBay is not as private as one would believe. Upon creating your account you agree to eBay's Privacy Policy which is laid out in black and white. It states as follows: "In order to facilitate interaction among all eBay community members, our Site allows you limited access other users' contact and shipping information. As a seller you have access to the User ID, email address and other contact and shipping information of the buyer or winning bidder(s), and as a buyer or winning bidder you have access to the User ID, email address and other contact information of the seller." As a regular "eBayer", I have no problems with their policy as the idea behind my information being handed out to other eBayers (again, if they are the seller/winning bidder) is completely rational. eBay allows me to opt in or out of advertisements that may be targeted for me, but does not hand out my personal information with my name attached to it to people that are interested in it for the sake of it.
Theoretically: you sold me one of your pieces of junk through eBay for $150. I send payment with a money order. You send me absolutely nothing. I am going to be pissed and immediately request your personal information from eBay (since we've had a direct transaction).
If you didn't ship me the item, you're at fault for theft of my money. If you lied to eBay and did not provide a correct address and contact information, you are a fraud for selling on eBay, and your account would be shut down for violating the terms that you would have had to agree with to use the service.
Point? If you're an honest seller dealing with honest bidders (or vice versa), then your information is as safe as any other service on eBay, except that people that you do business with would get your personally identifiable information. If you're a crook, eBay's letting you know that it will make it as easy as possible for law enforcement to deliver their own goods right to your doorstep. -
Not exactly . . .According to the eBay privacy policy as it appears on their site:
eBay cooperates with law enforcement inquiries, as well as other third parties to enforce laws, such as: intellectual property rights, fraud and other rights, to help protect you and the eBay community from bad actors. Therefore, in response to a verified request by law enforcement or other government officials relating to a criminal investigation or alleged illegal activity, we can (and you authorize us to) disclose your name, city, state, telephone number, email address, UserID history, fraud complaints, and bidding and listing history without a subpoena.
(emphasis added)They say in this written policy that they will verify the request as coming from law enforcement. This is a contract. If they do not honor it, they are (presumably) subject to legal action, especially if somebody experiences a material loss as a result (maybe unlikely, but still).
I'm not talking about what they do in the real world, or what anybody says in any particular interview. But what they say in writing does have some weight (even if they may choose to disregard it).
IANAL, yadda.

Don't Like it; Don't use Ebay
When I choose who I'm going to do business with I make a number of choices and at every stage it is a trade off.
I choose my ISP, connectivity providers, on-line shops and many more on the basis of how I feel about the company ethical and morally. This leads me directly to not having anything to do with ebay or paypal what so ever
It is not as if they are lying (something I have serious problems with) it is laid out in black and white in the EULA.
If you happen to use eBay and never read the click through bits you can get to them here Ebay's EULA.
One request don't wine about it afterwards, it is after all your responsibility to know what contracts you entered into even if as I suspect the click thru EULA will be shown to be indefenceable in the courts.

It takes more than a fax - seller's DO get privacy
There are a lot of comments about this being any easy hole for the bad guys to exploit by simply forging some letterhead to get a seller's info for identity theft and the like.
First of all, I don't remember ever having given eBay my Social Security number, the Holy Grail of identity theft. Second, eBay is only going to respond to "verified requests" when they have a "good faith belief" that there is criminal activity or the threat of "imminent physical harm."
So, I would say at a minimum they're going to verify that the request comes from a real-life LEA - it only takes about 2 minutes to look up any LEA's address and phone number, and if it doesn't match, to call it any verify. They're not going to risk getting sued for millions for giving out your personal info to a stalker. Come in off the ledge folks.
From eBay's privacy policy:
Legal Requests. eBay cooperates with law enforcement inquiries, as well as other third parties to enforce laws, such as: intellectual property rights, fraud and other rights, to help protect you and the eBay community from bad actors. Without limiting the above, in an effort to respect your privacy and our ability to keep the community free from bad actors, we will not otherwise disclose your personal information to law enforcement or other government officials without a subpoena, court order or substantially similar legal procedure, except when we believe in good faith that the disclosure of information is necessary to: prevent imminent physical harm or financial loss; or report suspected illegal activity. Further, we can (and you authorize us to) disclose your name, street address, city, state, zip code, country, phone number, email, and company name to eBay VeRO Program participants under confidentiality agreement, as we in our sole discretion believe necessary or appropriate in connection with an investigation of fraud, intellectual property infringement, piracy, or other unlawful activity." -

Re:Nvidia is dying...
Apparently the Radeon Mobility is not supported under Linux either - this has made my search for a new laptop very difficult.
This statement is false. The Mobility Radeon has been supported since Xfree 4.2.
I have been using this chipset with a IBM Thinkpad X22 for almost a year now, and that's with GNU/Debian Linux. ;) People using more cutting edge distro's have been using it longer.
You wan't a great, cheap, superlight laptop with decent 3d support?
Please visit the IBM eBay Store
Laptops are brand new in the box, full warranty, are almost 50% retail, and you are buying directly from Big Blue.
The catch? They're slightly behind the newest models, but hey, with linux support, that's the best way to buy hardware. -
Use an Audrey
These things are going really cheap and were all the rage like a year ago. I still have 2 floating around and they access my networked music server over Cat5 (need a particular USB Ethernet adapter to do this, but you can reflash several other USB adapters to look like the one the Audrey has drivers for) just fine. Use a pair of amplified speakers for the audio jack (the Audrey uses a Sound Blaster compatible audio card) and you're all set.
The QNX OS on the Audrey is quite impressive considering it's tiny footprint. Boot time is under 20 seconds (mainly b/c the CPU is pretty slow at 200 MHz) but people have trimmed it by cutting down on the services the OS loads at startup and it boots from a flash drive which you can re-flash or change at will. It is a true Real Time Operating System as well. And the file system once you have a hacked Audrey is very Linux like if you like puttering about in the various configuration files via its csh shell.
Go over to www.AudreyHacking.com where you can download various firmware images that perform the sorts of things you want to accomplish. Lots of folks are using Audrey's as cheap network terminals, Home Theater/Multizone Audio controllers, networked music playback stations, home automation via X10 control center using X10's Homeseer web served interface, etc.
Look around and you can probably get one for less than $100 a pop. A real bargain as you're gettting a 200 MHz Low end Pentium compatible CPU, with sound card, networking capability AND a working backlit LCD touch screen in a package that does NOT look like a computer/terminal at all. It is a pretty modern, decor neutral apperance. More capable than a dedicated network MP3 player, you can even get a web browser and e-mail client and other applications working without difficulty. There are several QNX software sites out there to check out.
