Re:Hype strikes again
God Of War is closer to a beat-em-up than anything else. Yes, a very modernized 3D beat-em-up with intricate combos and minigames, but a beat-em-up nonetheless.
Double Dragon is, of course, the genre-defining beat-em-up, though not my favourite in the genre. My pick is River City Ransom.
One thing to notice is that many of the best games don't fit easily into a single genre. The aforementioned River City Ransom is my favourite beat-em-up, but there are enough statistics and moves to learn that one could argue that its an action/rpg. Rez is a rail-shooter that could be also considered a rhythm game, due to the way the music is directly affected by the action. Crazy Taxi is sort of a racing game, but also has elements of Paperboy (which is another difficult-to-classify game) and takes place in a wide-open 3D city (pre-dating GTA's move to 3D). And how exactly would you classify NiGHTS? 3D-Platform-2D-Flight-Racing-Collecting-GodGame? -
Shut down...
I predict less than a week before Nintendo finds and shuts this project down like they have all the other remakes/original games based off their intellectual property.
Yes, as a webmaster, I've gotten a cease and desist letter for hosting a Mario fangame site, and there are countless examples of other fan projects that are released FOR FREE but Nintendo doesn't like someone using their characters. Sega, however is VERY lenient, and we know they know about us. -
Re:Sonic flash game
The best sonic fan game I've seen is DIY Sonic. It's actually more fun to play than the original, although it doesn't seem finished.
Also worth pointing out is this website which lists some of the level which didn't make it into Sonic 2. -
Time attack records
I still play the game today. No really.
It's all down to the amazing time attack mode in the Sonic Jam collection (Saturn). Try and beat these times:
Green Hill zone: Act 1:21"96.... Act 2:15"89
Spring Yard zone: Act 1:23"13.... Act 2:27"49
Labyrinth zone: Act 2:1:01"01
StarLight zone: Act 2:17"68 !
You wouldn't believe the subtle and surprising intricacies that one can discover by choosing the best route (I'll have to put videos online one day). Of course, if anyone get even close to those times (within a few tenths of a second), don't hesitate to contact me. But I bet that nobody, but nobody, could ever beat those times. I worked on them for ages!
By the way, Green Hill Zone is a nice website on the game, and contains trivia about the Sonic team.

Re:bandwidth vs quality?
At one of the few Sonic Fan gaming communities, we have a bi-yearly week long 'E3'-esque expo (S.A.G.E., not currently in operation), online only. Along with that, we do radio broadcasting during that week. Typically, we only have like 2 or 3 computers with DSL or Cable streaming out the cast including the computer doing the webcast. With enough distribution (say, on a P2P network) you could keep the quality high, and have more than 4 listeners on the webcast (At most, we usually had 20, pretty low-key operation, but you'll see my point, keep reading).
We had to set all that up ourselves, but with this program, it seems to (/could) do it automatically. As a listener ( IP 1.1.1.2) joins the Station (IP 1.1.1.1), they both become distributors of that station's broadcast. So, when the next few listeners come in, they're getting distribution from 1.1.1.1 and 1.1.1.2, plus they distribute that same signal themselves.
Everyone listening through Mercora duplicates the signal and becomes a node to distribute the bandwidth load (or at least has the potential to be). -

Sega Channel
Sega Channel had at least 20 great games playable at all times. The games would change each month with a few of the best kept over. Beta versions, unreleased titles, etc would appear in a special section that only Sega Channel members would ever see. The download speed for a game was minimal (a minute maybe) and all play was infinite and unrestricted for a cheap monthly fee ($15 USD).
Here's an old article about the service.
P.S. It of course failed in the end even though it gave a lot for very little money. -
to Sonic the Hedgehog?
1995 was not exactly a banner year for the blue blur. In fact, with the exception of 1997, it may have been his worst year ever.

Re:NES Install?
yes and no, its called the "work boy"
This site claims to have specs, but the link didn't work Jeff Frohwein's GameBoy Tech
This site has some info, a illustration and a publisher. emulation zone
It also seems that sony makes a info red keyboard, that is compatable with GBC. -
Been done.
PDA (click bottom link, they check referrers)-like utilities and audio players have existed for years. This isn't exactly killer app territory.
(Yes, that WB pic is a horridly fake-looking mockup, but it's the best I can do without going 2 hours from here, digging through old NPs, and scanning the -official- fake-looking mockup.) -
Re:Linux is really chugging along now!

The history! This comes up every now and then, and it is amazing that more people really don't know what happened.
This feud started with The Secret of Mana . Square, Nintendo, and Sony were teaming up to release the Secret of Mana as the killer app for the SNES CD. Sony then decided that they wanted to also release their own "playstation," which would play SNES CD's, and their own proprietary format. History can be found here. The contract did not forbid this, but forbid Nintendo from breaking out of the agreement. So, Nintendo started working with Phillips on another CD rom (compatible with the also doomed CDI), and announced that it would be the dominant CD format for the SNES. (See SCEE's Official Version. Also visible on www.scee.com, if you have IE and a patience with slow scrolling scripting. More history here.)
The history of that feud is probably only truly understood by lawyers, but it is clear that Square took a major hit in terms of profit when Nintendo abandoned the platform that Square had just geared up to and had developed their largest game to date for. I don't know who bore the brunt of costs for translating SOM to the SNES, but I'm sure it wasn't a happy meeting.
Let's also not forget that Nintendo decided not to release FF2 in the US thinking that it would be unprofitable, and made this decision after A: it had been translated and B: they had run an 8-page spread in Nintendo Power (check your backissues folks! There was a contest and everything.).
From there, Square naturally decided to follow the evolution of the SNES CD the Playstation, and break ties with the company that they had established an intimate relationship with. Ugliness followed.
That ugliness can be found elsewhere, I'm not here to tell you how it ends. I'm only here to show you the beginning. -

Sonic for the Super Nintendo
Sonic the Hedgehog was actually developed for the Super Nintendo some years ago. I've been unable to find any real info on the game, but I've found the rom which works fine on the Zsnes emulator. It's not as nice as the genesis sonic games, and not as fast either.. I wonder if it was made by Sonic Team?

Re:Neo-Geo!The Neo-Geo was actually two machines.. One meant for arcades and one for home users. The home user version was, as you say, ridiculously expensive, but I think it must have been worth it, seeing the quality of the games.. Although the majority of the games released were fighting games a la Street Fighter, you do have some neat car games and true side scroller gems like Metal Slug 1 & 2..
You also have the Neo Geo CD machine, which I've never tried, and the Neo Geo Pocket, a quite recent and apparently very neat handheld console.
However, SNK announced a few months ago that it's ceasing all operations in the US and Europe, so good luck finding one or games for it outside of Japan from now on
:(You can find a bit of info about the Neo Geo at EmulationZone.

PNG test results on the box at work...
Using the Win32 version of M16 found at the ftp site on the box at work, and the PNG alpha test site found here, I got these results. Not quite what I had hoped for. I will test both the Win32 and Linux builds on my personal box when I get home today.
