Re:This Just In
/b/ is the center of the internets.
OK, OK.
/b/ is an image board on 4chan where many memes originate, and where a lot of actions by Anonymous are talked about. Anonymous pretty much originated from 4chan (among a few other sites) because of their "forced-anon" rule, which basically forces everyone to post anonymously.Encyclopedia Dramatica has more but fair warning, it's definitely NSFW (as is
/b/ itself). -
Re:The public internet is not private or personal
Agree.
But, unless the applicant explicitly lists the profile as theirs, there is no way for an admissions office to know if the profile is real.
I'm sure there will be a case in the not to distant future where someone will be denied admission to a prestigious school and that decision might have been affected by a fake profile made with the express intent of ruining their life.
Hell, we already have helicopter mothers making fake social networking profiles to goat their child's rivals.
I do not want any government trying to police the internet to route out trolls. Instead, admissions offices and HR departments should do their jobs and stop relying on google to do their jobs for them.

Re:The crossed the line this time
they are just a group of dangerous radicals
You're giving 'Anonymous' a bit much credit there. Anonymous doesn't have an agenda, per se. They do it for the Lulz. Scientology is an easy target. Mrs. Palin is, if anything, an easier target due to her sudden and dramatic rise. I have no doubt in my mind that if Anonymous could find Mr. Obama's personal email account, they would do the same thing with exactly the same glee.
'Anonymous' extends from the anonymous posting habits on 4chan and certain other message boards, where it's easy to bullshit, dickwave, and otherwise behave in a sociopathic manner. They hate because it's fun and not because it serves any purpose. It's not about supporting one candidate or the other. It's about hatred, misanthropy, ego gratification, and taking sadistic pleasure in torturing someone. Bigotry, sexism, and racism probably play into the mix as well.
Anonymous published Mrs. Palin's email address with exactly the same glee that they would report a Camwhore's secrets to her family and school administration.

Re:Conspiracy theory...
I doubt it. Several reasons but I will only list a few choice ones.
First, if they (McCain/Palin) win, it will most likely be because of Palin. I was personally planning to vote McCain not because I like him, but because I dislike Obama that much. Now with Palin on the ticket, if she is half of what they make her out to be, it will be happy with that choice. This puts the GOP in precarious situation of trashing their own party and destroying about all of it if they push Palin around. She is basically McCains support and if she wins, they will know why the win is there.
Second, Palin doesn't seem to be the type of person who will take things lying down. She may be small time but I'm sure she could yell just as loud from the presidential pulpit as anyone else. The media will gladly air any controversy she deems necessary to put forth. I don't think the GOP is dumb enough not to get that.
Third, A lot of republicans actually like her. She seems to be back in the roots of the days were people could hold their head high when saying they were a republican/conservative. She would do more in the next 4 years (or 3 after McCain's death) to reunite the party and clean house then the GOP could expect people to believe.
For these major reasons which could probably be boiled down to two (popularity and expectations), I don't see anyone running her over despite how small she is. In fact, I think if congress attempts to shut down the government to get something passed, Palin would probably put up a counter of how much the government is saving by congresses asshatery just to make it look like she is doing good. Imagine the cunning of Dick Cheney with a face people like.
I for one look forwards to saying MY VICE PRESIDENT IS A BABE. Then I look forwards to the internet porn of her according to rule 34.

Re:But some artists suck.
"less than crappy acts like Britney Spears is fundamentally broken. I will not give one penny to those talentless pop stars."
Awww come on that's kind of not fair. Obviously she can sing and dance, and she probably writes some of the lyrics. Yeah, she gets other people to do composition, and production work, but to say she's talentless is not fair. Talentless people usually contract out the whole deal - everything from song writing to production, and then perform poorly on stage.
I can't believe I'm defending Britney Spears.
In the end, it comes down to who controls the pool. Just like public swimming pools, patrons come in and do a variety of things - some go for their swim, some dive with goggles
... some piss in the pool, some parent's let their kids come in and shit in it .... this has fail written all over it.Damn 4chan
... now I can't help but think of a bunch of black guys showing up and closing the pool.Private pool parties sound like the way to go.
I personally prefer the lake though

Re:Pirating or not
Yes but consider. At the moment
/b/ is obnoxious. But most of the content I've seen there is legal. Mods delete kiddie porn and people that upload or even download it get IP banned and occasionally IRL Party VannedBut imagine if we had an internet where anonymity and privacy are actually designed in, which is what you need to stop the MPAA party vanning people for piracy. On
/b/ sick fucks could post as much illegal porn as they want. The mods wouldn't care (the reason the censor is to stop the site getting blocked by ISPs, but a darknet would probably make that impossible to stop the MPAA presuring ISPs to block pirate sites) and in any case wouldn't have to way to enforce the rules (darknets would anonymize users). The Party Van would have no way to find them either, because the network would be designed to stop users being prosecuted for illegal content. Basically unless you're willing to view a stream of kiddie porn /b/ would become completely impossible to look at. But the thing is that lack of accountability would affect every site. Hell the content on Pirate Bay would probably become more vicious too - at the moment they take down illegal porn and presumably ban people to stop them reposting it. But in a darknet people are untraceable and unbannable.I actually think the TPB anarchists are people that have lived in a very organised society, Sweden, all their lives and have no conception how nasty anarchy is.

Re:Who is in charge of codenames at Apple?
Apple is running out of big cats to name their systems! There are only nine species, according to Wikipedia: leopard, lion, jaguar, tiger, cheetah, cougar, snow leopard, bornean clouded leopard, clouded leopard (although it fails to mention the biggest one). Thus, Apple will soon have to use smaller felines, another family, or a different naming scheme altogether.

Re:Sniff, sniff..
Watch your kids enjoying themselves. Wave at them. Smile a bit. Interact non-verbally at a distance. Animals, including humans, have done it for millions of years. Failing that, at least don't look like you're retreating to your geek toy like a smoker with itchy fingers - take the time to think about whatever interests you, solve some problem in your head or something.
I simply can't envisage a child being in any way pleased to see her dad playing with his smartphone the moment she turns her back. What's important is that you make effort with what you can do, not that your inner ear condition makes you vomit. -

I don't trust The Consumerist
While I'm concerned about the privacy-invading plan outlined in the article, I have to say that I don't trust The Consumerist to get the story right, after seeing their article on Overstock and Wikipedia. It presents an anti-Overstock line, that Overstock tried to whitewash its Wikipedia page, got reverted by noble-minded neutral Wikipedia editors, and then tried to get their way with sockpuppetry and harassment. Now, apparently Overstock.com has plenty of real problems, and lots of unhappy customers. In this case, however, what they were charging turned out to be true: that a financial journalist named Gary Weiss was using his own secret Wikipedia identity (Mantanmoreland) and sockpuppets (Tom Stoner, Samiharris) to not only "blackwash" the Overstock page, but to create his own puffed-up Wikipedia biography and advance his own opinions in favor of "naked short selling." And that Weiss had manipulated Wikipedia's top brass into taking his side on how those articles should read. This claim was finally investigated a couple of months ago, and found to be true. (Another Wikipedia page connected to the unraveling of the scandal: here. The investigation only covered misbehavior on Wikipedia; according to Weiss' maybe-not-reliable Encyclopedia Dramatica entry, he also posted fake Amazon reviews for his book and sockpuppeted Usenet and bulletin boards.)
To bring this back to The Consumerist, this Wikiscandal had come out more than a month before their article. This leaves me with little faith in their ability to get all the facts. So I'm not sure they're presenting the full story in this case. (In their defense, the mainstream media apparently didn't want to cover this misbehavior by one of their own, either, instead preferring to cover Jimbo Wales' titillating tryst with Rachel Marsden.) -
