The company has a webpage here but they don't have an article/photos (at least in the engrish section of their site). Anyone read Japanese?

The Japanese LOVE cool-sounding American names, "Final Fantasy", although meaningless to someone who understands English sounds very cool to someone who doesn't.

-- because on this one I agree completely. I minored in Japanese, and the phenomenon isn't even limited to marketing. There's a slew of American-based words that have no meaning whatsoever outside of the context of the Japanese language, which are used in everyday conversation.

BTW, don't use the Fish for this. The Fish is good for getting the gist of things, but the translations themselves are unintentionally funny. Like Japanglish (Mmmmm... tasty Japanglish). If you don't believe me, try my translation in German->English mode! Bwahahahaha!

I think they should have had their lawyers write the english translation. They seemed to do fine on the threat letter.

If you receive an attachment preceeded by text in broken Engrish, you're probably *not* going to want to open it up. ;)

It's more of the same sort of US-directed xenocentrism that spawns stuff like Engrish.

It's kind of sad (I happen to LIKE having other cultures around, dammit :/), but I suppose it at least has some entertainment value.

I've only got my rudementary high school French to support me, but I think either the show's writers screwed up translating to French, or someone screwed up translating from French. "Let's get cooking" would be, so far as I know, "allons cuisiner". Of course, it's clear he's trying to say "allez cuisine" in the show.

The only half-sane translation for "allez cuisine" I can think of would be something like "go cooking!", as if you were talking to cooking as a person, encouraging it to go on. That's heavy on the half-sane.

In the end, I guess that if that if the Japanese can mangle English, I suppose they can mangle French too.

Actually, we weren't slagged so badly last time... at least nothing that I wouldn't have said if I couldn't check out the site and see what was going on these days (it is obviously a lot different from the googlecached stuff from six months ago).. The "+4 conspiracy post" was just a part-time spork-wielding goatrapist pictured here (don't click that unless you want your eyes to pop out) whom we pissed off by voting down his article on K5. At that time, he had created an 17-page, intricate conspiracy theory about an organization that had a net profit of about $400 and one employee (me). I think it's funny, actually.

But, alas that is over... I actually lost a lot of money because I tried to put my efforts into too many profitless free-software things. We really wanted to go nonprofit but the costs and time needed in doing it otherwise, however, were so damn high that I had to bite my lip and figure out how to manually dissolve a company, how to form an organization, what is expected of a nonprofit, how to publish our accounting data for the public to see, etc. Reading IRS forms is not fun.

I'm surprised Flatpack (aka Spiers from K5) was modded up to +4... Why? Well, he forgot the other things that our notorious organization has done:

• racketeering in local LUGs and, at gunpoint, forcing users to do a full install of Debian GNU/Linux from a crate of 3.5" floppies.
  
• the unpublishably disgusting and controversial murder of Geekizoid founder, Scott "Vlad" Lockwood.
  
• gluttonous consumption of caffeine and ... and asking Matt Szulik of RedHat to feel our warm Bawls.
  
• faking the suicide of CowboyNeal and Inoshiro caused by the depression from being in one too many questionable polls.
  
• a fanatical devotion to old Nintendo games with Engrishy dialogue and a catchy theme song.
  
• extortion stemming from stealing RMS' hippie flute so that he couldn't play music to his servers anymore. This was insanely scandalous, as the GNU servers crashed continually afterward.
  
• incorporation of incantations to Bob Saget within the kernel source.

Anyway, that's my 2c... don't read into it too much or anything. Let's be real... like any geeky club, the aim is just to have fun, build cool stuff, hack free software, chill out, and not give a fsck. It's cool like dat.. and anyone is welcome.

Actually, the original Japanese voice actors for Mononoke Hime didn't do much anything else.

I seem to recall hearing that Akihiro Miwa (Moro) is actually a reknowned character actor whose stock-in-trade is characters of questionable gender.

Yôji Matsuda (Ashitaka) was, among others, Asbel in Nausicaa, and in fact IMDB lists his first credit as being in 1974.

Yuriko Ishida (San) has been working since 1987, when she voiced a character in MADOX-01.

Most of the others have credits going back at least several years, and some into the 1960s or 50s. Nothing I've ever heard of, but at least it shows they've had plenty of work in their native land.

(except Shimamoto Sumi - voice of Toki - who had a bunch of other minor roles)

They were good, but you can't say they are "some of the best voice actors in the industry."

The American voice acting was surprisingly very good (except Clair Dane - San). They were done by REAL actors instead of some random bum(s) off the street.

I am not trying to say that American dub is better than Japanese dialogue. I am just saying that the Japanese voice acting isn't one of the best. And the American dub is pretty good.

(There is a reason why, in Japan, they re-released Mononoke Hime with American voice acting with Japanese subtitles.)

Indeed there is--and that reason is that the Japanese seem to have an obsession with the English language; they think it's "cool" (or "kewl," as the case might be) to use it anywhere they can--even if it doesn't always make a lot of sense.

This is also why English dubs of films like Macross: Love, Do You Remember and Megazone 23 Part II were actually commisioned by the Japanese. I myself have a bootleg VHS copy of the Megazone, with Japanese subtitles all along the bottom.
