Re:News?
Ben Heck has made about 8 different laptops out of every console ever made. Why is this one being posted?
And why is any of that interesting? I mean, sure, I get the whole "making B out of A just because you can" thing, but seriously? Making a working grandfather clock out of Lego— that's cool. But making a computer out of, well, basically another computer— doesn't sound even remotely interesting.

Eric Harshbarger
This guy has been doing LEGO mosaics for years, and if you google a bit you'll find others and the code for creating them.

Before the idiotic "legos" starts appearing...
See Question 18 of http://ericharshbarger.org/lego/faq.html. A pre-emptive strike.
-
Re:How many times do we have to say it?I beg to differ! Check it out. http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/faq.html
18. Which is correct as the plural of LEGO: 'Lego' or 'Legos'? Neither, actually. The word 'LEGO', when used as a noun, should only refer to the company that makes the product. Otherwise 'LEGO' is supposed to be used as an adjective. Thus, when referring to the pieces, neither 'lego' nor 'legos' is correct... rather one should say: 'LEGO bricks' or 'LEGO pieces' or whatever (using LEGO as an adjective -- and one should really capitalize all of the letters, and put the little 'circle-R' symbol after it (®)). This is all a matter of protecting the trademark of 'LEGO' for the company (using it otherwise degenerates the strength of the trademark). This is not to say that I use the word correctly 100% of the time... but that's the answer to the question (it's always fun/painful to read the near-flame-wars that start at slashdot.org over this topic... and generally, both sides are wrong).

Re:Legos: a closed, proprietary system
Your comment should be funny, but somehow isn't. The point of LEGO building is doing things within a set of tight rules and achieving things nobody would think possible. Think LEGO grandfather clock.

100% Lego????
What's the white part pictured?
http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/images/clock/g earworks_top.jpg
I'm no Lego head, but I haven't seen that part one before. Is it Lego? Look's like a pully?

To answer the obvious question...
...yes, he's made a girl out of Legos. Only a mosaic, unfortunately.

Re:This is NOT news
Heh. Check it. It was originally done in January 2000 and the weight reset time has been updated last year to be 30 hours.

slashdotted already...
.. or so it seems. that poor little server!
before it started to fail though, I noticed the escapement violates the retentive geek's rules on colour matching in lego construction. Just because it's hidden doesn't mean you can just bodge it together out of mismatched pieces, you know. -
just so you know....
This is the same Eric who built some guy's desk out of LEGO a few years back. He's been talked about on
/. before, just check out his portfolio:
http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/portfolio.html
He's built clocks before, but I think this is his first working model. Of course, be sure to check out his Tux and BSD Daemon sculptures as well. This guy is a master at LEGO construction, and be sure to look for him in the future. -
Non-cgi Linky
Well, since the server is suffering already, let's finish it.
Bet'cha the other images are nearby too
-
Re:Legos
Yup.
They go overboard. -
Re:Legos
These are really cool, too. AFAIK they're relatively new compared to Legos, though.
This guy seems to have had some fun with them.
I loved Lego Technic when I was a kid, but the sets have gotten more and more lame since then. Too many special pieces, and too much $$. Of course the plain old blocks are awesome and timeless. -
Re:Is Lego back on firm financial ground?I should get some bricks and build a huge permanent clock.
It's been done.

Natalie Portman?!!! Oh, puh-leeeeease!
You just can't take *BSD seriously when its fronted by losers like these. Would you buy software from them? I don't think so! You BSD groupies need to find some sexy girls like her ! I mean just look at this girl ! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox . As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx . I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass ?!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Lt. Gay Ellis you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of Linux if she told you to? Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight deamon or a gay looking goat ! Don't you wish you could get one of these ? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty !

It is kind of interesting...
Five years ago we would've all said, "Screw 'em! There's billions of jobs out there, and you can get one that doesn't require a credit check and will build you a Lego desk as a perk in your employment contract!
Now we're sitting here thinking, "Oooh, that sucks... but what else is there?"
Damn the venture capitalists for catching clue! Damn them!

Re:Others like him...
And that cake actually comes apart into slices. Wow. But this is his masterpiece, as far as I am concerned.

Re:100,000 pieces? Is that a lot?
If you check out this link and scroll down a little bit you will see that the model used roughly 100,000 pieces.
Scott. -
Re:Others like him...
-
Re:Down with specialized pieces
Ah damn, that explains it. I was at Eric Harshbarger's page and saw this mention of the blue tub:
I get most of my bricks from discount department stores like Wal-Mart or K-mart. Toy-R-Us also comes in handy. For pieces not available in the bulk piece sets I resort to LEGO Shop At Home (1.800.453.4652) or private collectors that I have contacted via the Internet. In the spring of 2001, LEGO discontinued the very useful 'blue tub' (#3033). -

Try here here. This guy does Lego construction for a living. A LIVING! I'd build Legos for a living to if it weren't for my lack of opposable thumbs...Oh, well, back to engineering.

Try here. Too bad HE hasn't built a LOTR set...although I figure some Slashdot reader has the money to commission such a project. Well...maybe not.

LegosAs a kid, I couldn't even build the damn lego item on the box the legos came in! Most of the Lego creations I made were used to test fireworks' strengths.

Lego Town
Lego City
Beethoven
Queen Amidala
Audrey Hepburn Wall
Big Clock

I love Andrew Lipson's Math site, thought it was on slashdot for a while. If you like to see other such sites check out Eric Harshbarge's Lego page (cool stuff like wedding cakes and skyscrapers), Henry Lim's totally awsome lego sculptures, he's even got Natalie Portman (Not naked, and next to the petrified beethovan). BTW, Eric's got a very interesting page on on San Mononoke (more on those).

The debate Lego or LegosSome what off-topic but for those people wondering about the whole debate of whether the plural of Lego is simply Lego, as opposed to Legos, I found an interesting take on it at this Lego sculpture faq. Funnily enough, as you shall notice at the bottom of the quote, the author mentions this whole question is a great source of debate on Slashdot. I guess we shall find out soon enough if that is actually the case.

Letter frequency
OK, according to the guy's website, his ASCII art includes 24,140 letters (that's A-Z, not counting numbers or other characters.) He lists the amount of each letter used, which I added to find the total.
Now, let's compare the frequency of letters in his mosaic to the frequency of those same letters in the English language, using data from this website.
Letter----Mosaic-------English
'A' ----> .3438 % ----> 8.151 %
'B' ----> .4515 % ----> 1.440 %
'C' ----> .0994 % ----> 2.758 %
...
'G' ----> 7.668 % ----> 1.994 %
...
'Y' ----> 11.52 % ----> 1.982 %
'Z' ----> .6214 % ----> .0770 %
Feel free to calculate and post the rest yourself. Use your favorite non-English language if you like. YMMV. -
The problem with the media labIn every talk I've attended given by Media Lab personnel, I've been given a very distinct impression that its home to a large number of extremely intelligent people who like to sit around a think a lot, and aren't particularly motivated to doing much actual hands-on research. This is both a good and bad thing on the whole, but when times get tight, the doers are more likely to survive than the thinkers.
On another note, does anyone think they'll need to tighten their lego budget?
