A properly defined standard and a browser plugin would make this idea go much farther.

Please no. Kill it now. Seriously, this is just another really bad idea that seems sort of neat that will make the web harder to use, like embedding your entire website in a flash animation. *shudder*

Here's why: Do you really think that a disambiguation entry that takes up a whole page in wikipedia is better expressed by a little popup window that you won't even see unless you move your mouse over the link? It's just more information that won't make it into search engines, that will confuse users, and that will encourage designers to produce websites that are difficult to navigate. Did you notice that with all that fancy multi-link functionality, the author didn't manage to link to a single other source that thought this was a good idea? Really, folks, it's not that hard to just add a footnote or parenthetical remark (see also fake links), and doing that is so much easier on the reader.

Stop making it so damned hard to get useful information out of a website!

P.S. I'm not kidding, just take that idea out into your backyard and bury it deep under the ground where no one will find it. I know, you're thinking, "Ooh, but it would be kind of cool if it were just integrated into the browser and you'd just get a nice list of links to click on." No. Just think of all the information that you'd need to present to the user to help her decide which one to pick. It just doesn't work in a little popup. Here, I'll get the shovel.

Somebody could run their own identity server that says they're http://spammer.example.com/000001/ all the way to http://spammer.example.com/999999/ and that's not a goal of this system to prevent.

If anyone can run their own identity server, then why use this rather than a (probably more user-friendly) Captcha system?

OP: Got a webserver of your own? Why not put the Windows equivalent of "curl http://myserver.example.com/secretpage" in autoexec.bat or whatever passes for a bootup script these days? If the laptop goes missing, watch your server logs like a hawk and get ready to call the police the instant a geographically-identifiable IP makes a request.

We need a better way to recognize ads in webpages. Any ideas?

How about distributed fingerprinting? With the right extension, everyone could report an ad to a set of distributed servers which whould then fingerprint the files. Browsers would then fingerprint every image they get (perhaps just a part of it would suffice), check against the fingerprint database using URLS like http://fprint.example.com/4a2f134a234140fa and cache the result.

Something like razor?

Doubleclick may die because it is so easy to shut down the browsers ability to request content specific external sites.

Sites that ad content from urls on their own server (rather than external doubleclick urls) need to have site specific rules added to adblock (as long don't use obvious words like 'ad' in the url).

Sites that embed text ads directly into their html source code (without external javascript) are not effected by adblock at all. To block those sorts of ads you need to install grease monkey and write scripts. The average user can't do that, and even when a script is available it is almost always site specific.

To survive, doubleclick should:

1. Offer a simple perl proxy server script to all sites that have double click ads. The webmaster would rename the proxy script to something unique and ads would get served through their servers. For examlpe the ads on example.com might come from the url http://example.com/box.pl
2. Research server side technology that will make it super easy for webmasters to embed text ads directly in their pages

Otherwise doubleclick will be replaced by much more tech-savvy ad companies. There is no way that online advertising is going to die tohugh.

The domain "example.com" is reserved for testing and documentation purposes. See http://example.com/. So this would be a great place to send test emails without pissing someone off.

I don't really understand. So what if someone creates a one-shot OpenID server? How has this harmed you more than if you'd just allowed the person to create a username and password? Why would you trust them to type in their street address but not to supply a secure OpenID server?

So someone says their FOAF file is available at http://spammer.example.com/0000001. So what? The alternative is they say their username is GNAA_TROLL_0000001. Put up a captcha in either case if you don't want bullshit accounts.

What priviledged access were you planning on giving to Slashdot users but not johndoeblog users? That doesn't make any sense.

Oh, and wget retreiving the same page can be caused by a number of things besides being used as a DOS attack. Suppose, for example, there is a persistent network error (such as ICMP filtering breaking path MTU discovery). That will cause wget to retry the transfer many times. Or perhaps (based on the Konquerer problems reported earlier) wget was getting some sort of "Temporary Error: browser not recognized" from the server. An error in a script intended to perform some other function such as mirroring can degenerate into fetching the same page. Someone might have even written a script to download your home page at regular intervals with the intent of seeing exactly what changes were made exactly when. The wgets might have had the same IP address but not even come from the same machine if the IP address turns out to be a cache on a large network. The cache could even use wget as its retreival mechanism. Or, more likely, is used by a web to email gateway (of the old fashioned sort that allows email only users to retrieve web pages) or a cell phone gateway. Sometimes wget is also used to get messages into web logs after mail to webmaster bounces. while /bin/true; do wget -O /dev/null http://www.example.com/your_site_is_handicapped_in accessable.html ; sleep 1; done Which has the amusing effect that when they look at the weekly/monthly web logs, the #1 ranked page on the site is a criticism. Waste of bandwidth, yes, but hardly a DoS attack - rather a retaliation to the webmaster's denial of service through incomptence. Also, sometimes manual wget users load the same page more than once when testing commands such as "wget -O - http://www.example.com/ | fgrep -i HREF | sed ..." while writing a script to extract urls from a site. Or, it could be that there were a grand total of five uses of wget and that your ignoramous publisher didn't know what wget was, googled on it and DoS and found that some crude DoS scripts use wget and was oblivious to its legitimate uses. So, 5 lines in the log show a tool that is occasionally used for DoS attacks but usually used for other things and he concludes that is proof of an attack. Kitchen knives are occassionally used to commit murder, therefore existence of kitchen knives is proof of intent to murder.

I also find the eudora=autourl very odd. Looks like the web link was being distributed by email and got corrupted. Some SPAM filters may filter email by checking the spammyness of any linked-to web sites. wget could be used for the retrieval portion. In that case, the wgets would just indicate that people were bitching about your site by email.

Not to mention the fact that your publisher was a horses ass. After claiming there was a DoS attack (which he described as something like the most massive DoS attack against a publisher in history), he may have been to embarassed to admit otherwise and may have fabricated a few records as "evidence". If he had given you the complete web log five days earlier, I might be more inclined to believe it. But saying, in essence, "on the basis of five whole lines from a web log provided to me by someone who has just proved he is ethically impaired, I conclude that there is some truth to the claims" just doesn't wash. Not that it would take much to convince me that someone launched a trivial DoS attack.

Read this comment's heading. Everything else follows in a logic fashion.

Always use double opt-in. For user registration with your website, don't make the checkbox [X] send me a monthly newsletter checked by default (like sourceforge does, the fuckers). Give an example how such a would look like, this helps deciding whether it's useful to sign up.

Keep the newsletters short, condense them as much as you can. Ideally it should just be a couple of bullet points that can be fully grasped with a glance. Then add a link to the detailed version on your website.

Never forget the unsubscribe. Make it ultra concise. The shorter, the less problems of comprehension, less chance for things to go wrong. This is best done with such a link: "To unsubscribe, visit http://www.example.com/unsubscribe-newsletter/user smailaddress@example.net" On that webpage, do not require confirmation, instead unsubscribe the user immediately when the request is made. Say up-front that he will not get any more mail - and stick to this statement! Obviously, don't send mail that he successfully unsubscribed. You may include in that result page a very simple feedback form that asks for the reason of unsubscription.

Also, users don't read email newsletters. No, really, they don't. They are one of the most ineffective medium to communicate what you have to say. For all the trouble you're going through, more people are attracted to and read spam than proper newsletters.

Sooner or later, you are going to end up on a distributed spam blacklist because some clueless n00b submitted your newsletter as spam. Plan ahead for this day.

All this advice can be justified by usability science and even common sense. Sorry for the lack of linkage, perhaps someone else can ameliorate.

But what if I want to mention the URL of a site without influencing its ranking on search engines by actually making it a link? It is reasonable that someone may want to mention http://example.com/ without linking to http://example.com/ with the obligatory square-bracketed redundancy.

You purposefully didn't do what it said you should do and then complained about it afterward? If that were true you should have made your observation that manual trimming of the space would be required in the original post and not in a followup.

Get yourself (or write for yourself) a browser plug-in that is smart enough to wrap your pasted URLs in the markup appropriate for the site so you won't have to think about it ever again and never again get caught with your pants down in public.

Slashcode shouldn't have to cater to people who insist on being inconsiderate lazy assholes.
