Well yes, it would be an ad sales office, that's Facebook's business. And judging by Facebook's own careers page and the statement in this article where a US representative of Facebook says they pay taxes on their business activities in Italy, it would appear that it is indeed Facebook. Unless you can point to evidence to the contrary, your counterpoint is unfounded speculation at best.

I would also suggest that selling ads means it has at least some control over the site's content, regardless of whether the actual servers are located there.

Maybe this is defamatory, but I can't see in any way that PETA actually serves to achieve its ostensible goals. Greenpeace, another vocal media-loving special interest group, at least managed to bring its concerns into the mainstream. PETA won't be happy until we all canvas-shoe wearing vegans.

You can use an xmpp client with facebook chat. You can also use an XMPP client with MSN messenger (if you implement microsoft's auth goop). unfortunatly neither facebook or microsoft have enabled federation with there xmpp servers so they are still walled gardens, just walled gardens you can bring your own client to.

No. It's defective by design. It cannot co-exist with general-purpose computers, and so the content cartel seeks to eliminate general-purpose computers and put them under some form of centralized control. That is, in a word, evil.

My focus here is the aspect of how DRM protects the rights of content creators (aka, artists) and helps to prevent people freely distributing their works and with no compensation.

There is no "right" to prevent others from reading or copying a work. I'm all for authors and musicians getting paid, but I've been arguing for over a decade now that the way to do that is to eliminate copyright and establish a royalty-right, modeled after songwriter royalties. I can sing "Tangled Up In Blue" for free at a party; if I play it at the bar, using it to make money, Dylan gets his nickel. I'm happy if people share my book or my album for free; if they make money off of it (putting it on an ad-supported site, for example), I want a cut. (The book is not CC licensed but will be DRM free; I intend to CC license a later edition after my publishing contact expires.)

[In the middle of writing this post, my SO wanted me to "unfriend" some supreme PoS. No visible way to do this. Search Google. Go to this Facebook help page, appropriately called "How do I unfriend or remove a friend?". In attempting to follow the 3 simple steps, I go to that person's Facebook page and attempt to hover over their FRIENDS button. Of course they are not showing one. Back to Google. Follow this new link...interesting how Facebook says it is a 3 step process (that doesn't work, and requires *#&%^ Javascript) and the wikihow page says it is an 8-step process that involves finding the person on _your_ FRIENDS list. I'm in the middle of porting an Atlassian product.

They are probably some of the best Java apps out there, and this port is a NIGHTMARE.

The easiest ports are PHP.

Start with something that you can write well. If you are good at Java, then use Java. If you are good at PHP, then use PHP. If your seed project sucks, then forget about scaling. It won't be able to leave the crib.

I use PHP, not because it's a good language (it isn't), but because it is probably the single most portable host-executed dynamic language out there. It is the "P" in LAMP.

If I want my system to be portable, extensible, scalable and installable by as many folks as possible, then I use PHP. If I have a completely bespoke server, that I'll never move from, then I have a lot more choices. It is pretty difficult to get decent Java hosting, BTW...

PHP is pretty fast, these days. There are a number of ways that bad coding can will slow it down (for example, using it to build vast MVC frameworks as if it were Java), but a great deal of FaceBook is written in PHP, and they have chosen to make the language faster, as opposed to rewriting their code base. They have done something similar with MySQL.

I uninstalled the Facebook app when I found its background service responsible for 10% of my battery life. I only ever want to use it to upload a picture or two (upload via https://m.facebook.com/ on Android browsers has been broken for a while).

Yeah, you never know, i mean you are just violating their Real Name policy. I'm sure I can't think of a reason you would ever be banned. Nobody has ever been banned from facebook for being in violation of the real name policy there.

I mean, they only banned famous (infamous?) author Salman Rushdie for registering as Salman Rushdie. Clearly that's not his real name so, they banned him, and when he complained they reinstated him as Ahmed Rushdie, since his passport says his first name is Ahmed. It took a bit of a media frenzy on the event for facebook to buckle and let him be Salman Rushdie on facebook.

But hey, Google is the company that had a real name policy and banned people over it, and then caved and dropped it, while facebook is the company that HAS a real name policy, recently fought a court case in Germany to keep it, and bans people who violate it... and so therefore:

They only have 7300 Likes on Facebook. Don't you find it a little odd that they have over 136x more of them on G+? I see only a few possibilities:

1) Bots are responsible for artificially inflating scores.
2) Facebook really is on the downhill and people are leaving in droves.
3) There's a tactic in play that actively encourages liking on G+ (e.g. discounts on products, a tie-in with Google Wallet, etc.).
4) A niche community has settled on G+ to the exclusion of Facebook.
5) The site is receiving extra attention thanks to its founder's celebrity status in the open source hardware community.

Based on one of the other responses I've already received, I'm inclined to think #4 and #5 are what's happening here (though I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Google had tied Wallet to G+ somehow). Limor Fried, who founded Adafruit, has even more plusses than her company, but that comes as no surprise simply because she has attained a level of celebrity in the community. Just because we can cite celebrities (and things they're directly tied to) as having lots and lots of attention does not mean that they are representative of the whole. Rather, I'd suggest that she and her company are an outlier.

I'm more than willing to concede that some niche communities have found a home for active discussion on G+. Linux has already been pointed out, and now you've pointed out the open source hardware community, which likely has quite a bit of overlap with the former (and is also demonstrated by the fact that Fried seems to be largely inactive on Facebook, suggesting she's on G+ to Facebook's exclusion, thus affirming #4 above). That doesn't change my argument that the general population is largely unaware of G+ and are either using it unintentionally or not at all.

I would also wager, that Judith Vidal-Hall has a facebook page, a Linkedin page. As far as I'm concerned, anyone signing up for either of those two services has abdicated all semblance of Privacy.

A Judith Vidal-hall is on Facebook, but provides no additional information to strangers. Despite the Slashdogma, it is possible to have a Facebook page and not spend your entire day posting your SSN and rapid status updates about what you ate for lunch and how it is propogating through your digestive system.

What I have found is that schools will literally send pupils that would not test well home for the day while testing is being done.

In the US we just fake the numbers. Sending students home would burden parents with parenting. No one cares much when fraud is discovered among teachers, but send a bunch of kids home early to the inconvenience of their parents and you will hear about it.

Eventually we'll get back to the moon someday, and who knows what we might find up there?
